Church of Resistance update: Sony gets a verbal trashing in Parliament

Ó

Lord Privy Seal Jack Straw - Image 1The last time we heard from the people up in Parliament, we heard about Sony not being socially responsible about its effects on the youth in general, but not much else about the other claims the Church of England has made against the company - namely displaying the church in a bad light, copyright issues, what-have-you. Now, we have more quotable quotes about this fallout between Sony and the Church of England, and they're still from Parliament.

Presenting Keith Vaz, Labour MP and frequent critic of videogame violence. Do note that he made this statement in the House of Commons in an attempt to raise the issue.

My right honourable Friend will know that I have raised the issue of violent video games on a number of occasions. Will he join me in condemning Sony for the publication of a new video game that depicts scenes of Manchester cathedral, without the permission of the Church authorities, in a game that is very violent and bloody?

Will he join the Prime Minister in stating clearly that there is a responsibility beyond profit on those who produce such games? Can we ask Sony at least to withdraw the game and pay compensation to a Church charity, and may we have a debate on that important matter?

This quote won't be complete without the reply of his right honourable Friend, Jack Straw, Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Commons. His response, verbatim:

My right honourable Friend is right about the issue, and there has been totally unacceptable practice on SonyÂ’s part. It has a moral duty to withdraw the game and make reparation to a Church charity, but it ought also to have some enlightened self-interest about the damage that it is doing to what was a reputable brand.

Withdraw the game and make a reparation to a Church charity. Very tall demands, considering Resistance: Fall of Man has been out for quite a while. It's also quite disconcerting that an incident regarding a location digitally-replicated in a fictional videogame is getting this much political attention - which asks the question: just how far will this go?

In any case, there you have it. Their take on what's happening right now, as far as the battle between Sony and the Church of the England is concerned. What say you, readers? Let us know by your comments.

WHY DO THEY BLAME THE WRONG COMPANY FOR THIS? ITS RETARDED

by Fortheloveofgod - 2007-06-15 05:11
» ?

WHY? This is beyond ridiculous, I had more faith in Parliament than it deserved. Another case of blame videogames for the shortcomings of the establishment. Considering that the game is fictitious, and the church the source of countless wars, pain, and suffering throughout the centuries, the C of E ought to pay Sony for the bulls**t they are putting them through. Nuff said.

» My opinion

The house of parlament is a mess. People are shouting out loud their opinions and laughing at others. If he said that in one of their typical meetings I would not take his words seriously at all.

And I haven't heard any good facts more than the church was in the game. I find it ridicilous that they haven't anlysed the game. What it stands for and HOW exactly the church is portraited. If its just a dead background then who cares? Shouldnt they look at other games if they want to find violence and sensetive stuff. For example, the ending of Max Payne act I: The whole place looked like a damn satanistic church, with junkies saying: "The flesh of angels" But did we se any analysis or critisicm? NO

Because they dont analyse the games, they just want damned publicity and instead of talking with the people making games, they FORBID them like they were some damn drugs. What good will exactly the money do that Sony should pay? Nothing! What exaktly for kind of "charity" will the church use the money for!?

This just shows how utterly stupid politicians are.

» Why blame anyone?

Noone in their right mind could argue that using the cathedral in the game was wrong. I mean, 1: it's a public place, 2. religious buldings shouldn't be treated any different from any other buildings and 3: IT'S A GAME...

» wrong company

they attack the wrong company, not even a mention of insomniac at all through all this that i have seen. if i did not already have this game i would go buy it just to stick it to them

Not to forget that if it was copyright protected then the guy that made it dies longer than 70 years ago so the right died as well

by Lukey - 2007-06-15 05:58
» This is totally stupid...

For starters, the church has NO legal basis to complain.

The copyright on the church expired centuries ago, whilst the actual church level in question is about defending the church from dam evil aliens.

Why are they so stupid?!?!

by whatajoke - 2007-06-15 06:00
» seriously

they are bashing something the don't even know. i bet they all heard this from the word of mouth without any backing and think that whatever they heard are true.

sony should sue the reverend/the church back for humiliating them. add that parliament guy in it as well, that'll spank em good.

» Publicity

Looks like Keith Vaz and Jack Straw are trying to paint themselves in a holier-than-thou colour. Jack Straw should be the last person doing this though, especially after the way he acted as a cheerleader for the Iraq war.

» POINTLESS

To be able to tell a good story you need good characters good storyline and good environment thats what resistance did. Did Diablo or Diablo 2 get taken off of store shelves no they did'nt and didnt you have to go through a church in order to get to Diablo yes you did. "Can we ask Sony at least to withdraw the game and PAY COMPENSATION to a Church charity, and may we have a debate on that important matter?" So thats what it really comes down to they need some money and instead of bring this matter up with Insomniac the game developer they go to the publisher you know the one with the money.

by Albanian_Killa - 2007-06-15 06:44
» It is retarted

It is retarded.

Also, they said Resistance: Fall of Man was a "new video game". WTF? That game has been out for about 8-9 months. The reason they probably didn't bring this issue out earlier was because they waited for Resistance: Fall of Man to make some money. Bunch of corrupt bastards, don't know ***** about crap. These are the people that don't deserve to run the world. Idiots like Hillary Clinton.

by Don't worry - 2007-06-15 07:03

Those guys will go on vacations for the next 3 months. Nothing will move. Then they'll come back and start bashing each other again... Move on

There trying to do more then get rid of this game there trying to get money those bastards leave our games alone we dont bother u *****s.

This is freakin ridiculous....the church spends time and money on this. Lol maybe they should focus on rooting out their dirty molesting priests first and leave the gamers alone. Its good to know what the church does with your tithe isnt it.

by Bill Clinton - 2007-06-15 07:44
» Where's Hillary and Jack?

I swear. Its like Hillary Clinton and Jack Thompson went to England and showed the reverend a video of the church and the gun. Thats all. Didn't Explain how they are saving the Human Race. There arent NAZI's IN THE CHURCH. They arent blowing the church up, With Aliens screaming "HEY, VIOLENT TEENS AND PEOPLE! START SHOOTING THE CHURCH IN REAL LIFE! START KILLING PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH! GO AHEAD!"

NO, THEY ARENT. They just show the Church as a recognizable place. When I saw it, Im like "Oh, A Church. Exciting. I dont even care what church that is."

Im sure in England its no different. Do you really think the British who play that game get ideas about shooting up the church or shooting people around it? HELL, NONE OF THE GUNS IN THE GAME EXIST IN REAL LIFE! NOT EVEN THE RIFLE!

HOLY CRAP! To top it all off, The game is set IN AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE. That is even explained in the game that NAZI's never even bombed England!

I could understand if the game was Saints Row, Or GTA or a really "Millitary Kill Everyone" game. Its not. You dont do gang wars in the church (AWWW, Poor Manchester has REAL issues like that). You dont do a drive by on the church. HELL, YOU DONT EVEN SEE A NUN, PRIEST OR ANYTHING. Its a Backround. Its a building. Leave it alone!!!

by Hells` - 2007-06-15 07:48
» WTF ???

I hope that in Resistance 2 we can burn that church down and kill all the priest inside....

This is really but really ridiculous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by nastradamus - 2007-06-15 07:55
» ***** those ***** suckers

the church probably offered them a cut. after all, the only institution more corrupt than religion is the government.

» Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury...

Ok, first of all, this is America. The land where McDonalds has to pay a man because HE ate too much burgers. If, in the end -although completly inappropriate-, Sony has to pay a claim to these guys, it won't surprise me.

But, we should consider a few things. THEY should consider a few things, before making demands like this. I made a little list - here it comes.

1. Yes, it is COMPLETLY true games influence people. But, what DOESN'T influence people? Come on, name me One, just One, activity that Doesn't influence people. I have said this before, and I will say this again:

'Games influence people. Movies influence people. Even the News influences people.

But does that mean we should ban games? Does that mean we should ban Newspaper and make the TV illegal (because it HAS been proven EVEN the News influences people EVEN MORE than games). Well, No we should not! Where are we going if we are going paranoia over games? Over toys, because that's what they are in the end!

No! If people kill people, or do any other illegal or just plain bad things, the fault lies within those people! It's too easy to put it on things like games. It's so easy and it's oh so weak. So don't!

2. Is this the first time a violant scene (movie/game/whatever) takes place inside a church? Hell no! Of course not! As far as I know churches are still public places, and I do not see any reason why Sony can't use it in their games.

3. Mutated monsters... in a church... is that appropriate? I don't think so. And what exactly were we doing in that church? Were we perhaps - uhm I don't know... - Say, getting rid of those faul creatures? Weren't we helping those lads?

Well, what most people - nongamers spescially - forget is that in the end, the thing we - gamers - are fighting for isn't the blood. It ain't the brains flying around.

Ok, it's all part of the experience, but that isn't all of it. It's the thrill of all those people counting on you, you being their last hope, their final prayer. They fear and shiver, for if you should screw up, they will be lost. But you don't screw up. You save the damn world, for one moment you were everything that counted. You were all but none, and everyone.

This is why games get played that much. It allows us to aim at a higher, more important goal. It allows us to fight for those things that really matter. Liberty, freedom. The very things the USA was built on back in the colonial days.

But the only thing people like Jack Thompson and organisations like the Church of England are attempting to do is to take away this freedom. The freedom to be us.

And for a church, they play it damn dirty.

And now, when the PlayStation starts calling me back and my fingers start to ache, I rest my case.

by ANNOYED - 2007-06-15 08:04
» WTF

The guy above gt it exactly rite the F***KIN CHURCH JUS WNT MONEY N IF MANCHESTER GT F***KERS HU WILL BELIVE THIS S***T THEN U SHUD SUE DA SCHOOLS NT SONY

by Stilgar91 - 2007-06-15 08:10
» Ooops...

Lol, sorry about the article I posted above, I was talking about america a few times while the incident takes place in England.

Well, the point is still the same.

Even when I said something about freedom and that it is what the USA was built on. England had a revolution too, back in those days when the parliament was created (which was for that very same reason).

My point being to Jack Thompson and all these other people who call themselves lawyers. Why don't you start looking at the REAL problems instead of creating ones that aren't there. You do realize you are saying people are starting killing because of toys, do you?

by Chigthemnky - 2007-06-15 08:29
» lets learn a lesson

Well everyone remember this so that when the real aliens start attacking us no one defend the catholic churches as you may be sued after saving the earth for having given the curch a bad name.

the problem Sage is that you are asking a logical question of an illogical situation.

by blazeking - 2007-06-15 08:56
» wtf

For christ's sake it's not even the same church building!!!

For a lawsuit or complaint it has to be a direct copy of the church, which it isn't, and was never meant to be.

The building in R:FoM does not say it's the Church of England. I'm sure all the old churches look the same in architecture and structure. But are not exactly alike.

Stop selling the game in their country if they're so worried. F*** them. Anything in a video game is worng, but do we complain when any U.S. landmarks in a game. No. We accept it as a compliment that they took the time and effort to do it and accept it as "Mature" fun as the game is marketed to ADULTS not MINORS, so why are they worried about kids imitating gun violence in a cathedral. Nobody wants to go to hell that bad.

Why do americans only think of themselves???? the game has only been available in Europe for only few months. Perhaps sony should base the game in congress or the whitehouse and then you can see how it feels like! What a lot of rubbish, sony should be more sensitive to other cultures not just pandering to america white trash.

by dragon1980 - 2007-06-15 15:14
» what a load of crap

this game is set in an different reality to the world we are in now. the english church should keep their mouths shut and stop asking for handouts & just get over it.

ITS JUST A FRACKEN GAME !

by Wow1!! - 2007-06-15 18:12
» Who Causing the issue Sony or COE?

This is kinda funny cause i just wrote a paper about a similar issue

First of all let's start with my main issue, violence. The church of England states that Resistance is manipulating youth into violence. They say alot of video games are manipulating youth. I'd just like to ask anyone who's reading my comment right now to just ask yourself, did you really want to shoot a guy's head with a shotgun after playing a violent video game? Sure it seemed cool but remember a game isn't real life. In real life there's consiquences for your actions.

(i really hate to bring this up)Do you think that Cho killed all those people at VT because of video games? No not beacause of video games, because of his life. All video games do is entertain and that's all people want these days is entertainment and happiness. Nobody has the right to take that away. My second issue with the issue is that the church hasn't said a thing about any other game's violence, but when it involes their so-called faith they start to worry about the little kids. Not to mention that religion itself has an enormous history of violence.

I'm not atheist, i have a religion of my own. But when it comes to games i consider it a blessing to have them, not a corruption.

by Senor DingDong - 2007-06-15 19:14
» not rubbish

Have you seen a movie called Independence Day. There's this really famous scene regarding the White House. Maybe you should watch that before commenting on America not caring because its not set in America. I'm not even American and I think you're an idiot.

by VSG - 2007-06-15 20:25
» hey retarded politicians

why are you just blaming sony when there are thousands of companies making violent games?

and its not just games that influences people, everything does!

why are you representing the people when the people opposes what you are fighting for?

ask anyone on the internet and millions of people are opposed to your plans.
