CES 2010: Sony explains 3D gaming and more

At their recent CES press conference in Las Vegas, Sony announced that an upcoming firmware update for the PlayStation 3 will allow the hardware to support 3D gaming. Now we know you're still on a limbo on this one, so here is SCEA's Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller to further explain how will it all work.

but they might standardize 240hz as the standard for 3D due to 120hz divided by 2 won't give you a number divisible by 24 other wise known as 24p or whatever they call it. 2 frames in 3D is equivalent to 1 frame in 2D. So you need twice the refresh rate in 3D to get the same refresh rate in 2D for those that don't know. It also might require a firmware update maybe. If I remember correctly the XBR4 I have has something called system update I think so they could implement it if they wanted to though I doubt it since they do want to make money on these new tvs.

Some want it and some don't care. I personally want the 3D experience and even if that means wearing glasses. As long as it is done right, it is worth it. The old blue and red glasses is not what this tech is about it is new technology and with more content in 3D it could really be a winner. I say it is not bust.

If sony don`t support red blue anaglyph glasses then I am disgusted. It is so unfair expecting people to pay for a new tv for this. My tv cost $3,200 it`s a sony bravia 52" only a couple of months old and It is not 3d capable even though sony said it was. They better bring anaglyph so everyone can use it. It is so easy for them to do it that way and everyone would be able to use it.

can someone tell me why it costs $120 to replace a BD drive because my PS3 just stopped reading disks and I wonder if it really is worth it since its about half the price of a new PS3 slim?

This is all a load of crap! DO NOT get excited about this until you have seen it for yourself!!!!

I have the Nvidia 3D solution and with my face in front of my 24" monitor it looks great.

However, I viewed 6 different TV provider solutions for 3D while at CES and they all looked like total shlt!!!

Like I said, with your face in front of a large screen it looks good. With your face in front of a huge movie screen it looks good.

When you are looking at even a 50" screen from across the room, it looks like shlt!!! It's like your brain is smart enough to know something wrong and it tries real hard to correct it. Instead of seeing a complete 3D image, only some it looks like 3D and other parts of the screen you can see the flicker of both images. This process just keeps floating around the screen. It's lame!!! I asked every single vendor about it and ALL OF THEM just give blank stares. Plus, it wasn't until I spoke up that then other people asked, YEAH, WHY DOES THAT HAPPEN?

The quality is bad, you can see the flickering!!! My guess is, this wont even begin to take off until we hit 240hz+.

DO NOT run out and buy a new TV just yet...

Thanks for posting that. I probably wasn't going to be buying a new tv any time soon (probably at least a year), but when I do, I'll make sure that it looks good in 3d before I buy.
