CES 2009: Sony teases with high-quality PS3 3Dv - Image 1

Do not adjust your monitor. That picture's supposed to look like that. That's a sample of Sony's stereoscopic 3D technology that they showed off over at CES 2009. You'll need a dorky pair of glasses to view it correctly. How dorky, exactly? Well...

He looks a bit like Elliott Gould. At least the lenses aren't in bright blue and red. The tech was demonstrated with the PlayStation 3's WipEout HD, running in true 3D. Don't get too excited though. Although Blitz Games said last month that Sony "fully intends" to support stereoscopic 3D gaming, the Sony rep at CES wasn't so quick to give promises:

Don't get caught up with specs. We're not going to talk about specifications. This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction.

That said, he didn't offer any other details about the tech, but we can expect more details soon - CES is far from over. It'll be amazing if studios start developing games for the PS3 with this tech in mind though.

It'd be a nice feature added on to games for those who wanted to experience it. Also, those glasses could be "cooled-up" for a retail release.

This will be okay if they support lcd glasses, red blue glasses and vr glasses. That way everyone will be able to try it without having to buy equipment. You can get red blue glasses free everyware, from comics mags and from tv guides. most people will like to try this very much. Will it work with interlaced tv though? At 100hz it would have no problem but at 50hz lcd glasses would be near useless because of the flicker. Unless they are using something that gets around this. Maybe like I said above lcd, red blue and vr glasses because everyone will have a chance to try it.

If they WERE to implement it, it'd most likely (i'm around 99% sure) that it'd be OPTIONAL.

So, corrected.

You can try it now if you have an Nvidia graphics card in your PC. You can get the 3d drivers from their website and that has the option to turn on/off at any time. Mind you, ive only tried it with the red/green glasses although the ones in picture are available. It a nice gimmic but not sure if it will take off.

I wonder if this works with those 3D LCD monitors. They work the same way as the glasses, only without the need for the glasses.

This looks kind of ironic right next to the article where sony are calling M$ and nintendo addon peddlers. That's funny :)

PS I can't wait to give these a go either, as stupid as I'll look wearing them.

I used to have a pair of glasses a bit like this years ago for my computer.

Any tv, the console will draw the image in the 3d colours and display it. Well, thats how it works with the red/green glasses anyway. Not sure with the shutter glasses.
