CES 2008: Sony confirms In-game XMB for PS3 this year - Image 1

Sony Computer Entertainment's running hot in the news waves right now, after PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 exclusivity and BD Live caught on well at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show. But Sony's Paul Purdy just turned up the heat to insanely sizzlin', and it's because he's just confirmed a long-requested feature: in-game XMB access for the Sony PlayStation 3.

That's right: we say confirmed. Word is that the bombshell was dropped at CES 2008 and the target period for the anticipated update would be within the Year of the Rat. That's within this year folks! So we repeat: Xross Media Bar access while playing a game is coming to PlayStation 3 gamers soon.

But because Sony hasn't divulged more information, we're bound to hear more updates from its camp as time rolls by. More intel on this once the signals read five by five.

» QJ bros

how come Quixand ain't getting no love anymore??? is it because it's been a long time since i've sent in a top??? hahaha!!!

i'm still in the top 5 (a QJer on my PSN buddy list told me "hey you better send in a tip or else you're gonna fall off the top5 and i don't even know where i could see the top 5).

anyway i'm guessing this is the tip i sent in an hour or two ago cause it has the same link from gamereviews that i sent in...

on topic:

this is good news, i'm guessing they will roll this out the same time Home hits.

by Quixand - 2008-01-08 16:25
» ahhh there it is

i just got bumped up by one (maybe).... just found where to see it and since i'm not 5th anymore (like what i was told) but tied for 4th then i'm assuming i got a bump.

by Justingraziano - 2008-01-08 16:29
» YES!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope it has in game music playing abilities. Now all they need to do is get this on the PSP as well!!! Then i'll be all set.

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-08 16:55
» I think it'll have all of it

If they took this long it'd be gay if they didnt have all of the main stuff that we want.

by Someone_PR - 2008-01-08 16:56
» yeah...

I sent this tip like 2 hours ago two... but hey dude... you are #3 now.. not 5

by Quixand - 2008-01-08 17:19
» yeah i know

tied for third... so i'm giving Vecha the no. 3 and i'm just taking no. 4... Vecha hasn't been around for quite some time now so i'm giving him the 3rd spot as a QJ Lifetime Achievement Award.

» Wow

From day one its been looking like 2008's gonna be

Sony's / PS3's year to shine. And alls I gotta say is....

Bout damn time.

by carlone88 - 2008-01-08 19:48
» ok nice, but at the end?

I think it's an important update, and something everybody was whaiting for (me too) but we don't have to forget that GAMES are the most important thing...all the best games are delayed!!!! I don't wand another super-update! I want games...this is the reason I bought this consol.

by Quixand - 2008-01-09 00:19
» there are no games?

maybe you just don't have the money to buy them cause they are there both multiplats and exclusives.... i don't even have time to give each of them enough attention and i haven't even bought rachet yet... the only significant delay that was for 2007 is GTA (Haze is not "significant" i'm sorry to say, we don't even know if the game will be any good) and even XBox owners are waiting for GTA too so it's not a PS3 owner dilemma alone and UT3 they moved back to december 07 and was already released so stop whining.

by exionzero - 2008-01-09 01:37
» pah

woah woah woah.... Haze not significant!?! Where do you get off!? Haze looks incredible! Right now it ranks higher than Killzone 2 in my most wanted list (insofar as the timesplitters games were infinitely more fun than killzone, and the same team is making haze).... if you doubt the significance of this game, go read the FRD blogs.

Back on topic though, this is fantastic news! I wonder just how much of the XMB will be accessible though...

by na2rul - 2008-01-09 02:40
» Well u cant expect a fully functional XMB

of crs not. in order to make it instant, it wud hav to be a basic xmb - perhaps direct friends access and music.

or maybe i might just be under estimating it

by terrainw123 - 2008-01-09 02:56
» ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is so freaky me and pS3 are meant to be, i said that this ability to play music while playing games would happen a month ago now it seems its true.

now with home on the way and this feature only a hardcore xbox homo would not have a PS3

by Manny151 - 2008-01-09 03:13
» TO exionzero

You must be out your damn mind "higher on my list than Killzone" I mean I'm looking forward to Haze my self but it won't even come close to messing with Killzone 2. Haze is going to be pretty cool and all with it's four person co-op and all that but come on KILLZONE1? PLEASE.

by Manny151 - 2008-01-09 03:15
» Typo

KILLZONE !?

by ibunkun - 2008-01-09 03:36
» This year.

good news: this year.

bad news: it will come sometimes between today and 31.12.1008 23:59:59:99

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-09 04:44
» Re: na2rul

But what else WOULD you expect from in-game XMB.. Thats really all you need (Its not like you'll be watching you videos while playing a game).

I just hope with in-game messaging comes in-game chat rooms for cross game chat.

And to Justingraziano, they dont need to get it on PSP. If I was sony I'd cyber slap someone if they said that, cause in game XMB is enough for the ps3.

by freezola75 - 2008-01-09 04:53
» ha ha ha ha i like what ibunkun said lol

they're being very vague about this in case no one else noticed. Sure, i can't wait for in game XMB but truthfully, we won't see it until either home drops or during the summer or as late as when LBP drops.

They could very well spring it on our bloodclaat bums sooner than we all think but... don't hol your breath lol

by Justingraziano - 2008-01-09 08:42
» @na2rul

Remember that the PS3 reserves 64MB of RAM for the XMB at all times so I'm assuming there will be all of the functionality (or close to all) available since the PS3's XMB runs on 32MB.

by Eclipze_ - 2008-01-09 12:48
» I agree..

WITH Quixand

Haze dosnt even look that great. I hate all the Timesplitter games so far (both graphic and gameplay wise), and hell no they wont beat kill zone 2 (graphic and gameplay wise obviously).

GTA isnt even too high on my list. Im looking for Mgs4, killzone 2, The agency (hell yea its looking good), and little big planet and stuff.

by shuaib000 - 2008-01-11 00:16
» ....

Dude, i just started seeing what's happeining with the ps3, it seems it's GREAT!

i was just wondering how much it costs, people say it's wayyy tp expensive, but, i'm beginning to think it's actually worth it, i mean Blu-Ray discs are doing incredibly well :)

so how much does a ps3 cost?, if it's 'bout $450, do you think it's worth buying one? Which model can you get for $450?

and what's the price of a Blu-Ray disc?

by Binary - 2008-01-12 16:52
» So

We can play music and play the game like the 360?

I love that feature on the 360!

by exionzero - 2008-01-14 14:22
» ¬_¬

it all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. I did enjoy the original killzone, but I much preferred the light hearted arcade play of Timesplitters.

I guess it all comes down from having a really bad time online with killzone (where the enemy team would just spam your spawn points with proxy-mines)...

The play mechanics of timesplitters are what made me love the PS2, I have high expectations for haze, and Free radical design are my favourite developer, so that's why it ranks higher than killzone for me.

dont get me wrong, killzone looks amazing, but it's a sequel at the end of the day. its got massive hype and I'm trying not to get too excited about it, I was let down by the original as I was expecting a halo killer, which for me, it wasn't, but with the hindsight of 2 lousy sequels, I dont doubt this one can deliver.
