ps3 cellSomething that cost Sony ¥ 2 billion (about a bazillion U.S. dollars) to develop must be good for something else than a game console! In fact, the PS3's Cell Processor - the thing that cost a bazillion dollars - was never meant to be exclusive to the game console.

Various configs of the Cell has joined the U.S. Army, a supercomputer, and the medical community. But for most of us, our encounter with the Cell outside the PS3 is through various electronic appliances commonly found in homes.

If you've been following the Cell posts here in QJ, you probably knew that back in June Sony announced its plans to use the Cell on appliances. The news here is that Sony is unleashing these Cell chip-powered gadgets as early as 2008.

According to Sony, "three to four of its leading electronic products" will ship equipped with the now famous Cell processor. Sony also said it wonÂ’t limit the utilization of the Cell to certain electronic appliances. The company plans to use it in "any products which will find a meaningful enhancement with the processor."

Memo to Sony: Did you guys see that movie "Small Soldiers"? Don't go overboard with the Cell, okay?

more effective

to just use a small, inexpensive processor. You don't need a Cell chip in a toaster.

How much is that in Euro?

Or... lets say in german. 1.000.000 = 1million 1.000.000.000 = 1Milliarde 1.000.000.000.000 = 1Billion American Billions = german Milliarde I would say the newsposter is unable to multiply. I dont know a number that is called Bazillion. This just smells like a new Sony flop.

the smart washer is here!

The 1 billion dollar supercomputer chip just might have the processing power to stop filling the washing machine when it's full. Not only that, but it's advanced artificial intelligence can drain and start the spin cycle that used to require a few switches and some wiring! I guess $ony has to recoup their PS3 losses somehow.

This is what i've been saying all along..

is that Sony did not develop their chip for gaming only, they developed a chip they could use in a multitude of electronics, then decided to cram it in a video game console. It isn't Sony's lack of development time that has 360 games looking better then PS3 (Fight night came out only a few months after launch anyways). It's the fact that 360 was built with nothing but gaming, and running games in mind, and being very unified and flexible in doing it....PS3 is just a hodgepodge of computer parts, made to look liike a console....and run like a PC...

sorry but any figure that would wear out our hooves (from stomping it out on ground) automatically qualifies as a "bazillion." we'll leave it to you guys to do the mega-math because it makes blood drip out our ears...
