Cell Microprocessor for PS3 Performing Poorly?

The Inquirer was able to dig up some dirt that might just give you a heart attack. I suggest you sit down before reading. The Inquirer's source claims that yields of the Cell microprocessor for the Playstation 3 are not good. The super chip which was designed by IBM and Sony for some very aggressive process technologies turned out to be a big disappointment when tests showed that yields were so bad that "the amounts of good dyes off the test wafers are "horrible". In testing chips, a machine marks the bad chips with a drop of dye.

Is this bad? Well, the yield is the proportion of devices on the wafer (a semiconducting material upon which microcircuits are constructed) found to perform properly. For most of us who are uninitiated to the ways of electronics, a good chip design made by a good process will have more than 90% yield. Somewhere between 0% and 70% yield is not a good number.

If the source is to be believed, Sony could be in trouble and it should start increasing those yields fast! Nobody wants to hear another PS3 delay announcement.

» Wow

Hope the source is wrong.

Then again, better for a working system than a half working one.

» i knew it

damn i just wrote something like this on 1up, that sony might delay the ps3 again why would they release socom and god of war 2 on the ps2 even though they have a heavy duty hardware coming out. as much of a sony fanboy and love sony i am i hope this is not true, i hope its just another bad press but if it comes out to be true oh well i guess 360 will be the next option. i can already see it, come E3 sony will show everything maybe some playable ps3 games and the new controller but at the end of the goodies will be another announced delay.

well xbox fanboys time for you guys to rip these article cause i know you will sleep well tonight and pray that this is true if not that ps3 sign will hunt you guys for ever!

» yep

Well, we all know how much "The Inquirer" is respected for their journalism work... *lots of sarcasm*

by TheProfessor - 2006-05-04 14:13
» The Inquirer? Also title is very misleading

He poster please be a bit more careful on the title, you know most people dont even read anything but the title and make dumb comments like "ooo the xbox is going to be more powerful".

Title should be :

Inquirer reports the manufactoring of Cell ships is poor.

» skeptical

Since when did we start using the Enquirer as a source? I'm very skeptical of the article, but I'm hope certainly hoping there's little truth to it like most rumors about inside information.

And to the person wondering why Sony is developing big titles for the ps2, it's because it's still selling in large amounts. Why cut their own sales be cutting down on development? The ps2's product life cycle is still healthy. The ps2 clearly makes money that sony direly needs because R&D of the ps3 is super high with all the tech it's introducing.

The ps3 may or may not be delayed, chances are it won't but we'll see. But the fact is that if it isn't delayed it'll still has a hurtle to get over in software and unit availability. As with any other new console, the number of games will be limited in numbers for the first year, and with the world wide launch console numbers will be low aswell. Because of this, it's a wise move to capitolize on a product that's still making the large profits in software sales that it does. Plus ps3 is backward compatible with ps2, so there is no reason not to develop games for ps2 which have lower development costs. The development just works to expand the library of the new machine and continue the life of the current machine.

» Inquirer = Fake

This sites reputation in journalism continues to decline, as any joe shmoe knows the Inquirer is full of nothing but FAKE shocking news just to get you to buy it.

Its just sad that one of the many retards that believe everything in those types of magazines is a blogger on this site (very unsurpising).

So yes, as those who already posted - very misleading header. That and the author needs to look up the words "legitimate" and "source" before they go posting slander such as this.

The only time a crime such as this one is permitable, is if its an April fools joke - but then again, this site posted jokes DAYS before April 1st, so again, unsurpsing if they are posting another one (they had just thought of) more than a month later. Or did I just miss the news about the first of every month being fools day from now on?

» Good yield

Last time I heard, and this is from an official source, is that yields are pretty good. I don't know what Inquire is quacking about.

Yeah i would like to see proof. Also PS3 is going to be playable at E3. So how is this legit.

by The Unbiased One - 2006-05-04 16:09
» Hmm

As much as I hate to see another delay, I suspected that Sony would release the PS3 in 2007 for a while now. Hopefully I am wrong (rare occasions, not to sound arrogant) and the PS3 will launch this year. If not, then Sony is in big trouble, the 360 has been out for a while and the Wii to be launched before thanksgiving, Sony will have to make up for missing the holiday season.

by Ninkul - 2006-05-04 16:38
» Poor Sony.

Well, this is just bad publicity either way true or false, im going to wait before i buy a next-gen console either way. Playstation has a stronger name in New Zealand than XBox or GameCube so hopefully they wont get pushed out of the market.

by pip77 - 2006-05-04 17:16
» BS

I hope this is just bulls*** someone made up. If Sony has to delay it again, I'll still wait. If they do delay, they'll have to lower the price to gain back the people that would jump for a 360 rather than being patient.

» It's labled a RUMOR

If you look a little closer you'll see the story was tagged in the rumor section. Don't freak out or attack the poster.

» hey...

hey...unbiased one.....you can't get more obvious than that:D

and I'm with SteveTao. I heard the yields were good.

must be one of the few "xtra hard core 360fanboi" trying to put some dirt on the silky smooth surface of PS3 console:P

by kenshin - 2006-05-04 18:10
» im already enjoy

just keep waiting for your time to play a next gen im already playing my 360 gost recon, fight night and oblivion and you just keep waiting your already super delay playstaion 3. Anyway no matter how good it is if not gona have a better online experience then my xbox live.

» rubbish

so your telling me that they have only tested the cell microprocessors 5 days into production! when they should have already made tonnes of PS3's. its just rubbish and a lie.

they would have tested everything to make an accurate date when it could be released, not just make up a date and test things later. There not stupid!

by elias - 2006-05-04 20:24
» the thruth

Well this is bull*****, look it up on the internet.

before, there was news that the 8th core would be disabled, because of 'bad' yeilds. IBM said this, IBM is official source.

Then a few months later they announced that it was not the case anymore, because the yeilds were very good now, and they were to start mass producing.

..and now this comes up..

Well, who to believe, the company itself, ibm, or some unidentified source which could well be some pc-fanboy on a bull***** forum.

Tell me

by spade - 2006-05-04 21:00
» Oh god....

So why are all these negatives stories coming out right before E3? hmmm....i smell M$$$...deperate times should i say?

by Vecha - 2006-05-04 22:30
» wait...

"they would have tested everything to make an accurate date when it could be released, not just make up a date and test things later. There not stupid!"

didn't they do that when they said "spring release"?

not saying the article is right or anything.

by CeCiL - 2006-05-04 22:51
» Suprise Suprise..

Far out, this is getting annoying... not the fact that the PS3 has more H/W problems (IF it's true) but fact is.. who cares? At this point we just want the bloody thing...

And like the first poster said: I'd rather a working console than a half working one.

"Guys, we have to beat Sony to the market, we are launching next month"

"But, we haven't started testing th..."

"Don't worry about that, with some excessive advertising and low supply, nobody will notice"

"But, you can't launch, it's too soon!!! We need to test a few things"

"Does it turn on?"

"... ummm yeah, ... no wait.... No, 3 rings of death"

"What are the chances of that effecting the consumer?"

"umm....high"

"Not 100%?"

"No..."

"Then launch it!!!"

by vice - 2006-05-04 22:55
» hello

this is to be expected with a new chip design of such a high performance. if it to be true that is.

if its true thats the reason y sony already moved the release to november.

it wont matter anyways later cause when they get better tech and development come a half-year or so it wont be a problem whatsoever.

wouldnt be suprised if microsoft said it as well, for we have already seen already a few lies made the o so infamous microsoft

Vechas comment is also true they would have already tested the processor before making a realease date to november. this article could have been just a rumor statrting back at the start of cell production and just now decided to release the info a day-late and a dollar-short

by Vietone - 2006-05-05 00:53
» Yields are fine

The yield of working cell processors is fine. You really think after all these years of designing processors and building them that they would ever get poor yields?

Sure, when the first cell chips were off the wafer, im sure the manufacturing process wasnt refined but they have had plenty of time to make it better.

Also the yield wouldnt affect the launch date of the PS3, it would affect the amount of consoles availible. Dont be surprised to see PS3 going for a couple thousand if they dont get a good amount of consoles out there.

by BULL3TPR00F - 2006-05-05 04:17
» @ #9

Im pretty sure Sony won't delay the PS3 any further due to there timeline of releases. Every 6 years.

PS1: 1994

PS2: 2000

PS3: 2006

however just a timeline to continue is not a reason for sony to rush the console to release this year, lol.

by Fact Man - 2006-05-05 07:15
» It is FAKE

Sony already said that the yield were fine so all of this is a lie and the Playstation 3 will be released and show us all what a true Next Gen console looks like. Also for a Pice of $399 or $499 no higher maybe lesser( For competition they have to get thier ground back from the Xbox360).

P.S(This is Sony people they have ruled for a decade and have put lots of money on the Playstation 3. Every thing is riding on the sucess of the PS3 and the Blue-Ray format for Sony,so they will get things right and the Wii and 360 will suffer.)

by gfsd - 2006-05-05 07:52
» sweet

to freaken bad it better be delayed because of the wii.

by acm2000 - 2006-05-05 10:56
» hah

"Playstation 3 will be released and show us all what a true Next Gen console looks like." lol oh dear, you do realise the 360 has advantage on the GPU, and the ps2 on CPU, thus both even out and are about as powerful as one another.

by acm200 - 2006-05-05 11:00
» umm

ps2, ps3, same difference, neither feature a PPU, which is the next logical step, so really true next gen will be after this one anyway.

by =Metallic-Force= - 2006-05-05 12:07
» ATTENTION HOG

lol they are just trying to get attention...

IGNORE.

by Just Curious - 2006-05-05 15:19
» Lets Hope So

I know many of you here are DH Sony fans until the end but i have a question to many of you, how many of you when you got your ps2 had the dvd drive just stopped working? and be honst, reason being is because i to was once a DH Sony fan until i was completely dissed by Sony when this problem happened, their response to me and many other ps2 fans was there's nothing we can do you will just have to buy a new one :( i was young and that was all the money i had

how could i afford a new one but did Sony care no, and did i buy another Sony product Hell No at least M$ is willing to go that extra mile for their Fans.

Which brings me to the BIG QJestion how many of you really think Sony after investing all that money into B-R is going to go that extra mile when the ps3 runs into problems which we know it will and please be honest.

Oh and has anyone read this artical yet?

Did you guys hear about that new alien boy the government has? he can fly and do all kinds a weird *****. I read it in The Inquirer the other day.

» @ #28

I've had my PS2 for about 5 years now, and the drive is still working perfectly. I think the problems were with the first versions of the console, what version was yours?

by Tomb - 2006-05-06 07:03
» same

i cant remember how long ive had mine, i must be 4 or 5 years and mine i perfectly fine, nothing is wrong with it.........yet

by Shatterdome - 2006-05-06 18:53
» #30, exactlly...

Problems with the first batch of consoles....it happens with pretty much every console, nintendo is the only one that hasn't had any major problems....I remember having to flip my 1st gen ps1 upside down so it would read disks, like only 4 months after getting it.

I like you people that say you fanboys must be sleeping well, man I really feel sad for anyone whose state of being is heightened by this "news"

I have a 360 and seriously nothing ps3 has demonstrated so far is any more interesting, and the vast majority of games are cross platform (which == looking the same). I plan on getting a ps3 as well, but only after a year or two when they may actually be able to squeeze the power out of the cell's and it's a decent price.

I gaurentee all of you expecting what sony is promising will be very let down...be realistic...

by NiNteNdo528faN - 2006-05-08 07:03
» sony sucks

i believe this is true

sony breaks so many promises and is generally a retarded company

wii will win

together wii can beat these companies that are just in it 4 the money
