Cell Chip Moves To 65nm Process in 2007

Depending on just how geeky you are you can either file this under "highly riveting stuff" or else shove it in the "mildly interesting" pile. Japan's Impress Watch is reporting the PlayStation 3's Cell processing chip will move to a 65 nanometer manufacturing process some time in 2007. Sony expects shipments of the chip to be made available later the same year. The Cell chip is currently being manufactured at IMB's Fishkill and Sony's Nagasaki plants on 90nm process, and shifting to the new one will help lower overheads and reduce the amount of heat the chip generates. While many have been quick to assume this will mean a price cut for the PS3, such a move isn't likely as Sony will be looking to recoup or at least reduce initial hardware manufacturing costs.

Another good reason to wait till 2007 before investing in a PS3.

So, better performance in 2007, or just reduced heat and manufacturing costs? Either way, I'm still getting a PS3 on launch day.

You might as well say good reason to wait until 2007 to get Xbox360, since MS announced Xbox360 ver 2 is coming out in 2007, and it will use 65nm chip which may likely to solve the heat problem.

You made a very good point. Seems like thes next gen consoles aren't quite ready for primetime yet.

damn, I'm not buying a PS3 till really far into the life cycle now, or they find an un firmware-f***able mod.

# Will really make no difference, except costBigperm 2006-06-15 05:00
Microsoft is moving to the 65nm chip for cost savings mostly. Most 360 on the market today donot get that hot, and i have never seen one that over heats.

But this will really help the cell processor becasue even the Cells in the new Macs run crazy hot. So hot that i cant work that your laptop actually feels like it will burn you. But every processor gets hot; and are designed around this.

Holding off buying a PS3 becasue of this news is pure rubish, the launch ones will not over heat, but maybe louder becasue of increased fan speeds. And you will see little or no performance gains since we are only talking about a couple degrees. I havent seen anyone with water cooled xbox360s say they get performance increases, and they drop the temp upwards of 10 degrees. The only thing i would really worry about is the quality of the BD players; since sony has a very bad track record with any of they optical drives used in there gaming consoles. Even the V12 PS2 lasers dies quite fast.

# Cost goes downGuest 2006-06-15 05:45
this is perfect evidence to say that not only will Sony drop the manufacture price of the PS3 but also the retail price of the PS3 which will be around 2007.

I think 2007 is the year all next gen systems(espessa illy the 360 and PS3 in order to have a low price and better tech will be in and they will have a better systems)

i say get a PS360 because you will get so much from both this great great systems which I beleive is true next gen(Halo, killzone, MGS, Gears of war) hell ya

# Blatenty won'tGuest 2006-06-15 07:28
Its blatently not gonig to be more powerful. I mean think about it. You're just lowering the wafer stanards so its only going to reduce heat and power consumption. Also, just say for a second it did make it more powerful. Now manufactures have got to make for a more and less powerful ps3? Its just not gonna happen.

And look at the back of the ps3 too. The power socket. That shows an internal power supply - no bulky xbox360-like adaptor.

# facts, people. they helpGuest 2006-06-15 13:12
@10:yeah, macs dont use cells. they never have, and its unlikely that they will. they had ibm before now they run intel. no sony. and @12 lowering the chips heat allows for higher stable clock speeds. that means faster.
