Capcom: Resident Evil 5 DLC is not an unlock key |
Ó
Capcom's Chirstian Svensson, however, stood his ground and stated categorically that the downloads were not keys but new executable code. The small sizes are due to the new mode using assets already existing on the game disc. Here's Svensson's post on the Capcom Unity boards:
Keys are 100K or less. It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc.
I'm no programmer, but I know there are a lot of you QJ readers who know their way around code more than I do. What do you think about the whole unlock key issue? More importantly, did you download and enjoy the new modes?

Comments [refresh]
The code itself is still small. He's right about it using assets already on the disc, which is the only reason it's not in the 100MB's.
Basically, they're making everyone pay money for something that obviously could have been there on release. I still call it a cheap trick, even though tons of fans would buy it anyway... There really was no way they didn't have it finished before the game released. The game was done a long time ago, as with many games going through the same process, they spent months upon months just testing the hell out of the game. This new VS mode was finished a long time ago too, it's just marketing.
You can't really say if it was finished or not at release....they definately knew they were going to release it though, as the trophies/acheivements showed some could only be gotten with the VS mode.
Regardless, it is way too small to be worth $5 and doesn't seem like a robust gametype at all....
I suppose if you care about your achievments enough to pay $5 to get 10 more, well.....all the power to you, I would never buy it...
wait a minute.... Code technically can be considered a key.. right? and its used to pretty much unlock the feature, cause everything but code was already there...
351KB compressed is a lot of code.
Don't know what these dip *****s are talking about, it's clearly already on the disc. Since on the Xbox 360 version it's a required 1.8MB, the 354kb on the PS3 shows its purely an unlock. There is NO freaking way you fit a game of any kind at 354 with the level of data needed for this generation. You can't even find a single game at any kb. Unless its a 2d ping pong game.
It's purely an unlock. Except in Xbox360's case. Basically the Xbox360 freaking cheap ass piece of ***** DVD couldn't fit the mode. So now we're all paying for it.
I give the one finger salute to Capcom and Xbox 360. It's a typical situation. Xbox 360 can't fit something on it, everyone gets to pay for it as DLC.
Uh bull***** most data is already compressed when your looking at the size retard. Your telling me the new audio (supposedly 3 songs) and such are all at 351KB.
.kkreiger? A fully functional shooter in 96k!?
Anyways, I call BS on Capcom, simply because, correct me if I'm wrong, aren't all of the LBC costume things 1MB unlock keys each?
"It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc. "
Bullsh*t.
You're charging $5 for something about as big as a floppy disk.
it's 1.8 MB. You're telling me the disk was actually completely full and they couldn't fit another 2 megs on there? Right.
And yeah, like Anhmeister said, .kkreiger had graphics comparable to a level in UT2k4, and it was 96KB.
I'm tempted to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt. It's very possible that yes, this was new code that wasn't finished in time for the game. Who knows.
LEFT 4 DEAD and didn't suck.
I remember when whole games cost $40 and came on a single floppy disk: code, graphics, sound, and all.
I'm going to have to go with Mr Toasty here and say that it is possible to put all the multiplayer functions into such a small package since you're not adding any raster graphic content (as opposed to vector art perhaps?) or audio.
Seriously, go open up any program folder you have on your computer and check out how big the executables are. Here's a short list:
(please note that I'm only talking about raw executables, DLLs and other resource files are not necessarily included unless otherwise states)
alcohol.exe: 1,278kB
opera.exe: 97kB
opera.dll: 3,612kB
mIRC: 2,743kB
you wouldn't have to program a new object for the player, just modify the properties
netcode is already there, etc
I still have so many other games I haven't finished yet, even for PS2. Also by the time I do buy it, the price will probably be lower.
I like when companies give dlc to add to a game only when they really give you something of value that adds to the experience and if it is truly something that they did not plan from the beginning. I hate when these companies release unfinished product at a full price then expect you to pay extra for the odds and ends. The sad thing is though, is if we want to get the full experience of the game, we will probably pay that extra money and can't recoup a higher chunk of our money when we sale the game later. Also now a lot of these companies will charge you for extra game modes as well instead of letting you download it as a free patch.
This is why brothers and sisters shouldn't have sex with each other....
I really hope you were joking. This has to be the most single minded, fanboyotic, ignorant thing I have read all day.
Okay, now its not a key. It's content withheld from us at release to charge for later. Whoopidyoooo! What happened to the good ol' days when games were jam packed with extras just because.
even if they decided to make you pay for the new feature it be worth it........it was great as RE4, they gave u an extra co op buddy......co op online.....mercenaries co op.........freakin crazy gun upgrades including unlimited ammo for 90% of the guns
This is huge guys, unlike halo 3 which is basically a copy from halo2.......they basically rewrap the same game tech game in new packaging
Unlike Dead Space where you can only unlock 1 new item which is the new suit.....and get charge 3.99 usd for everyone of the things that should of been an unlock item like 6 new weapons, gun upgrades
Don't lie 2 yourself and say there is not enough things to unlock in RE5 itself
Every game company out there is charging for DLC which is doesn't enrich the game at all whatsoever..........RE5 is charging for a NEW game play mode which is definity is worth my 5 bucks.....
isn't it RAVEL RAVEL RAVEL?
Halo 3 a rewrap of halo 2? im curious to know that xbox had the same power as the 360, that bump mapping didnt exist ... you might want to think before you open your mouth
on a side note i bought it not because i enjoy it but because i want to show capcom that if they make more **** for re5 i will buy it, because i enjoy this game and i want to be able to have new stuff to do with it..
oh yea and re5 does have a lot of unlockables... but in under 10 hours you can have everything unlocked...
^^ True but why be an ***** about it?
at best it could of been an expansion for halo2....not worth a single dime from me............you make me laugh unlock everything in Re5 in 10 hours shows the most you got out of it was a 1 time play through n thought u were mighty with everything unlocked...........put your money where your mouth is since i've yet 2 see it done.......with Mercenaries and ifinite rock launcher....lmaf don't kid yourself
It's not a key it's a doorknob to open the modes that should be in the game.
Although it's cheap I still think it should have been free. So many people are going to buy this. Those people that buy this are the reason why Capcom won't stop draining the consumer's pockets. I wouldn't mind paying for new weapons but VS mode is ridiculous.
That game still impresses me.....I think 360 banked on more dev's using prodcedural synthesis and is why they only went with a DVD drive.
and Capcom is ripping you off with this download.
NEW FEATURES OF RE5:
better graphics than RE4
retarded AI partner that wastes ammo and dies
NEW BULL*HIT:
5th grade level story and dialogue writing
plot makes 0 sense and is completely uninteresting.
horrible last-gen controls
inventory system blows fat c0ck
stupid "dodge" commands
"instant death" sequences (works great to make the game suck more for no reason)
buggy and unfinished
Also features new ripoff DLC! Only $5 more and Capcom will fix a tiny part of the game for ya!
F*ck you Capcom for ruining Resident Evil.
Are you on crack.
It is BS to charge for VS. I cant think of one game that pulled a mone like this. Games have had things delayed such as multiplayer in Fable 2. They dont ever charge for it tho. This is a feature that should have been included. Not only that but at such a small size it definatelly could hav ebeen done in time.
Halo 3 was a huge difference. Graphics, Much Gameplay, New weapons, New Vehicles, A MUCH MUCH better storyline, Equiptement. Thats just to name a few.
Dead space was a fantastic game. And maybe you should play it before you bash it. Those "DLC weapons were alternative fires on already exsiting weapons. NOT NEW ONES.
And as for talking about a game being a rewrap, RE5 didnt even update there controls to next gen, Yea MB back on gamecube having to stop aim and shoot was fine. But this generation those controls are crap. What is so next-gen in your mind from RE4 to RE5 that Halo 2 to Halo 3 didnt already accomplish?
You sir are an idiot.
that i cant get the platinum trophy without it. i think to get the platinum trophy you should only have to unlock the trophies that came on the disc. its cool that they added trophies and im not against it. but dont force me to buy something so i can get something that should come with the game.
i just did some research and apparently im wrong. you only have to get the ones in game. disregard the last statement i suppose. looks like capcom is keeping lagit,
I would just like to point out that the original xbox had 4 pixel shader pipes, which DOES allow for bumpmapping.....that was the major reason xbox was so graphically superior to PS2...
Also, yes, Halo 3 was just an upgrade of Halo 2.....upgraded graphics, more weapons, more vehicles......but nothing really changed....they couldn't even add a melee combo like they had been talking about for years....forge was about the only new thing they did. The game was still fun, but you are disillusioned if you don't think it was just a repackaging of H2 with new story....
Lets see 1.8 mb...a few codes implimenting a new set of coding to use the mercs maps...well if anyone ever played with mugen alot of ***** can be done with one line of coding
Soul Caliber 4 used a key for the yoda/vader unlock christ it was obvious those 3 slots were reserved for the jedi people. But as I said with mugen all they did was write a similar coding as it...
--Char slot--
1----> Yoda
2----> Vader
3----> Apprentice
so on and so forth its not the exact coding they used but what ever i think you get the point all fighting games Character slect has practically a similar code folders containing the different animations then the character select is the gui used to make that characters animations come out then the levels coded to interact with the characters. Simple as that...
i think it was fully intentional to make the consumers pay again but perhaps the dlc part wasnt fully finished when it came to release date. the way i see it they could have moved the release date back a little to finish everything. but then peoples would be having a sook about that instead. I know its dumb and really cheap of capcom and all but in reality its only 5 dollars which most people would spend on a snack or lunch a day.
in the end it never matters what happened or what story is told there will always be some people who have a sook. Alot of the people who say **** this and **** that do it for every single article. they must have sad sad lives i think.
a little upgrade in graphics with a few gagets n fireworks doesn't mean its great new n next gen it's crap compared 2 COD and I'm not even talking bout the new ones............like DMC2 the change from DMC1 is insignificant 2 be called the next installmentof the franchise is a joke.....................i have 2 agree with the clumsy control of RE5 but the AI can take care of itself, give it an infinite magun n she will doo mmost of the work for u at ease..........learn how 2 use them 2 your advantage.................the instant button command givving u a hard time proves u have yet 2 learn where the basic buttons are located on the controller n how long have u been using a ps3/ps2 controler 4???? 5 ...10 years..........you're killing zombies, they don't stop to say "let's have an intelligent chat"........dying 2 hear long dialog, Wesker will fill in on that department..........................as for Mr. I'm so smart i know he never played dead space......what proof do 2 have ....i got all chapter trophies
Piss off houruto. Its very clear your a ps3 fanboy whos never played halo. Get a life and stop trolling. Youve still yet to give one reason why you believe RE5 is any more next gen than halo 3. Re5 is much more an "upgrade" than halo 3 was. RE5 is the same damn game with new graphics and levels. Nothing special about it. Halo 3 however was a huge change from halo 2.
Seriously ravel? Are you just *****ing retarded? The word you're looking for is rabble. What're you a cat with aids a dementia?
to pay for online experience so i guess it does
You're a dumb ***** bump mapping has been around forever have you ever done any 3d modeling? Didn't think so... hahaha halo 3 invented bump mapping... that's a good one... considering it's been around since at least the mid 90s... which is when i started using 3ds max. . . probably has been around earlier.
you sir are a mega xbot troll
Check out debris (from the same guys who made kkrieger)
http://www.theprodukkt.com/debris
You'll be amazed how awesome stuff can be fit in 177kb.
Pretty cool isn't it.
as some have stated, A LOT can be done with small amounts of code... some of those exe files sizes probably include resources as well.
on the issue of unfinished games... would you all really rather we go back to the genesis days where adding unfinished features back into a game required a game enhancer? even then they likely just crashed the game...
when a game needed to ship, it did... damn anything unfinished.
get a life (or a job so you can afford $5 measly dollars) and stop whining about having it better than gamers had it 15yrs ago...
the content is still on the disc no matter what.
anything that can be included in the disc but are sold online are still ripoffs granted how close or far it is from the original release.
burnout paradise is the perfect example of a pure DLC, and no all of capcoms bs DLC's are nowhere near the quality of burnout dlc.
in my list of top milkers:
microsoft
ea and ubisoft
capcom
nintendo
.....
these companies are obviously guilty in milking gamers for all of their worth in stupid extra dlc which could have been easily included in the disc.
all of their effing dlc nowadays used to be just extras in the good old days, extras in the form of finishing the game or inputting pad codes.
now insane as it ease they are making people pay for it.
DLC should only be like what burnout paradise did and some great game expansions.
that capcom is charging 5 dollars extra for something
almost all games have for free.
anyways all people that purchases it in the first month will be contributing to the fund of the capcom re5 teams 2 months holiday in hawaii. *_*
we are going 2 have 2 pay 4 DLC 2 finish our game because devs are getting more lazy
i played it for free.
when did steam charge for online experience..?
1.8 MB is A LOT of pure code if they just patched the executable. I like how the writer of the article asks for people who know their way around code and all we get are ignorant rants and fan-boy rants about it.
A 1.8 mb text file is 400ish pages of information. That's 24,000 lines of code. Now that is source code. Compiled and uncompressed that would be more but I'm just giving you a picture. Orlyeh's example is right. Ill give some vidya game examples of the .exe files which is ALL THE GAME CODE NECESSARY TO PLAY A GAME IN A SINGLE COMPILED FILE:
UT2004: 1.9 mb
WoW: 12.0 mb
Crysis Warhead: 12.3 mb
Bioshock: 15.5 mb
I think that the xbox download had some games assets it needed to add like maybe some gui sprites or maybe sounds. So it is entirely possible that the add-on is only 1.5 mb.
"You're charging $5 for something about as big as a floppy disk. "
Cause price is always determined by the size of the file.
