Capcom: Perceived racism in RE5 did not alter game design

We all remember what an uproar the debut trailer for Capcom's anticipated survival horror title Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360) caused. The short clip depicted Caucasian protagonist Chris Redfield fighting mobs of black Africans who, according to some, were portrayed as savage and inhuman.

A new trailer was released a few days ago with Redfield going about his business, gatecrashing into the continent and stirring up the locals. Only this time, the hordes of enemies are more racially diverse, sporting various skin tones. As the case was with the first trailer, fans and the media took notice and wondered if the criticisms against Capcom caused the change in the visuals.

Kotaku was able to get in touch with game producer Jun Takeuchi and they were able to inquire about his stand on the matter. The developer denied that they were swayed by people's opinions on the first trailer.

"In terms of the reaction, we're in the business of entertainment," he said. "We didn't set out to make a racist game or a political statement. We did feel there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer."

Takeuchi further explained that they sent people over to Africa to do some on-location research. That, more than anything else, is the reason why they decided to include Arab and Caucasian peoples in the mix.

There you have it. Capcom's official explanation to address the whole racism issue. Now let's all go back to playing games - something the human race generally enjoys.

First of all before I begin I'm an American, and I am a minority, that being said here I go:

I'm tired of over productive melanin human beings (scientific evidence backs my claim) complaining of racism, for every little thing they believe is against their kind. If you ask me they suffer of paranoid personality disorder...now don’t take my diagnosis to heart as I’m still a few years from my PhD in psychology. I revised the Merriam-Webster dictionary here is the definition of racism:

Elaborating on definition 1, I never knew being of the black race made you a zombie. I never recall seeing a zombie in my life time especially not a black one! If a person shoots a zombie (which to my knowledge has only happened in entertainment media) doesn’t make you superior it makes you a hero. Racism has got to be one of the most incorrectly used words. By the way did anyone notice the producer is Asian? He is not Caucasian that is just the way he chose the characters just like all the previous versions. OH WAIT!!! the previous RE titles took place in the usa oh no the character had internal racial insecurity maybe he felt Asian or black or Hispanic that is why he went around killing all those white zombies! c'mon now the whole white on black card is getting old yes ancestors had a different way of life, there was different norms and one of those was taking blacks as slaves, torturing whatever but now things are different stop throwing that up in the air. In history rice was brought from Asia along with a lot of other spices to Europe and such...is that an excuse for Asians to say Europeans raped there culture by stealing from them? No! Rice came from Africa. The Europeans took it from there and traded with Asians the same as they trade some of their European customs with African's like hair dye and so forth.

Now to comment on this dumb @$S issue. First let me say I am black and im Philly (Philadelphia) to the slang challenged. This is the worst form to push around as racism. Its a Fu[king game. Today there is still racism around but it has evolved to stereo typing and profiling. So if people what to complain if you some Africans running around wit the pants down low with gold teeth wit a tank top shirt tucked in their boxers then you can cry racial profiling or stereo typing. If they only had a stereo typical white guy walking around with a business suit and brief case then that also is stereo typing that only a white males are business men. If they only had Asian people doing karate that is stereo typing or racial profiling. Or if they had spanish people all walking around with knives again this is racial profiling or stereo typing.

I'm from the Hispaniola - look on the old map and you will find it - People have a misunderstandin g about being Hispanic or Latino.

Latino - a person that is from any Latin American Country

Without getting into the actual debate about racism here, I'd like to say that I have the utmost respect for Capcom and Jun Takeuchi here for sticking to their guns.

It is exceedingly difficult to overcome a smear like this, being labeled as racist. In most cases these days, the mere accusation immediately prompts Def-con 5 PR control. To simply know you're not wrong and to ignore the accusation takes a lot of balls. I applaud them.

They may face torches, pitchforks and lynch mobs but they have wronged NO ONE in the design of this game, and I see no reason for them to buckle under irrational demand.

One race accusing another of "You did this to us." No, they didn't, their ancestors did. Most people of today have nothing to do with what happened several generations ago. Therefore, can't we all just try to make a change and get along, never giving up until racial hate as died out? It's not that I don't see color, but rather, color can be such a beautiful thing. For having so many unique people on our planet, we should be thankful for it and all do our best to get along, regardless of those who want to upset racial peace.

Unfortunately modern day racism or prejudice rather is fueled by culture shock, it really has nothing to do with individuals disliking one another, but people's cultures causing friction between them.

Luckily, I think the internet is having a profound global impact in aiding to reduce this shock. Still, I think we're a far way off before seeing major improvement. Probably by the time everyone who grew up without the internet is dead, these things will be behind us.

Much agreed. Everyone told me when I was going into the army that it will be a culture shock. I said NO WAY I'm from SoCal..... I was wrong. I was shocked alright but not for the normal reasons one would think.

I met people that had never seen a white person. People that had never seen a black person....whoa! Of course no one hated the other. In fact, I left basic training with a very odd thought in my head. Of everyone there I could think of at least one white person that hated a white person and I could think of at least one black person that didn't get along with another black person. Interracially we all got along.

In a nutshell it's all rosy an ideal BUT let me hear ANYONE make a case if ever the game took place in Israel... And before you make the argument that WWII is still too close to call, remember that South Africa was very recent. If we ALL could agree that the game could have very well been taken place in ANY country, (be it Iran, Togo, Holland, Chili, Hungary, Myanmar or Israel) then and ONLY then we can all tell them game hijackers to just go to hell!

I honestly don't think this game is racist whatsoever, but a lot of these comments seem racially insensitive. I can honestly understand why some see this as racist because millions of black people have experienced racism throughout time and even today.

Though I think it's dramatically reduced, for example a few decades ago you could hang black people in the deep south and only get a slap on the wrist. You couldn't drink from a water fountain use the same bathrooms ,school as white people.

Though, I think time has changed. There still is racism, but it's nothing compared to it was, even ten years ago. Barrack Obama being the first African American to be a Nominee for a major political party. That in essence, is a VAST change from the past.

I don't think this game or most Americans to be racist at all and I think this is simple turning a mole hill into a mountain.

first of all, I 'm from South Africa, and if the game was based on my country if would probably be accused of being racist. me myself as a non-white and avid gamer think that this is blown out of proportion.

being from a country that saw the death of apartheid from our constitution in 1994 only, race relationships is still a touchy subject. I personally can't wait for the game to come out and think that the trailers of attacking Africans is done brilliantly, as well depicting rural Africa in a very realistic way. When talking about people of a certain color it's helpful to describe the people I'm talking about. As I've already mentioned BLACK does NOT equal African. So there is nothing else to describe a black person other then black unless I know more about them. You ever call a brown person Hispanic when they WERE NOT? Go ahead. Unless you know more about someone all you have is there skin color to describe. However, once you start to use skin color to make broad generalized UNVERIFIED comments, then you just become an ass.
