Capcom: No Rival Schools on PSN now or ever

Hey, Rival Schools fans. If you still have your old Rival Schools PSone disc, hang on to it. Love it. Treasure it. According to Capcom's Chris Svensson, we won't be seeing that game as a PSOne Classic anytime soon. In fact, we may not see it ever.

"To put at least one question to rest, unfortunately Rival Schools will not be making an appearance," said SVensson. "There are IP clearances and rights we no longer have (particularly pertaining to voicework/soundtrack I believe) so our IP management group has told us it can't be re-released. I'm sorry as it's one of the ones I really wanted to see be put back up."

"So if you still have that PS1 Rival Schools disc in your collection, it's unfortunately going to be the only way that gets played for the forseeable future."

"Forseeable future" seems to give some hope but I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. Still, Capcom did manage to come through for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, which was in danger of never getting an overseas release due to IP-related issues. Of course, homebrewers can always just rip their game cds and play the game on PSP.

I hear ya. Hell, as far as I can tell it's not even really pirating if you already own the game. You're just porting it from one platform to another :) It's so easy for us to convert ps1 games to psp.. copyright issues aside, there's no reason Sony should be taking this long to put the classics out on Playstation Network.

It is pirating, stop kidding yourself - but that's not why I commenting.

Copyright issues are the reason why most classics are taking their time to appear. All PS1 (as well as PS2 and many early PSP) games have to have new legal deals drawn up before they can appear on the PSN. Once the medium changes (from CD - DVD - Blu-Ray - Digital), the original contract no longer applies (unless the contract originally catered for a change in distribution medium). Sony cannot do anything until all IP owners agree to a new contract for distribution.

This one was too young to know anything about Rival Schools & Project Justice. Don't get me started on another classic followed by a sequel: Star Gladiator & Plasma Sword...

All 4 made by Capcom, which in my opinion, are better than most 3D fighters.

PSX2PSP is the best for single-disk eboots. PSX impaler (something close to that) is the best for multi-disk eboots.
