Buy a PS3? Why not place a bet?

Copyright of Zach Nieland, 2001.We found this quirky little thing through 1Up, and we're not sure what to think. Instead of spending your hard earned cash on something important like a next-gen console, one site is inviting everyone to put their pride (and cash) on the line by betting on the the future of the PlayStation 3.

The site we're talking about is Bodog.com, an online gambling site that hosts bets on a variety of things, though their preoccupation is mostly with sports. They've made an exception by offering three different bets on future events surrounding pre-launch and launch period happenings, with varying odds and requirements for actually winning.

Interested? Well, the first bet is a simple yes or no question: "Will Sony reduce the $499/$599 price tags on Playstation 3 (PS3) before the expected United States launch date of November 17th, 2006?" The second bet looks like something that no one cares enough to wager on, but you never know what might actually happen. It asks, "Will the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approve Sony's Playstation 3 for release by November 17th, 2006?" To actually be called a winning bet, the FDA has to publicly announce that they did or didn't approve, so the fine print is kinda sneaky there. Lastly, they want folks to pick the winning horse by betting on which launch title will sell the most number of copies on November 17. They even have odds for each launch title.

If that sounds like your thing, then why not put your money where your mouth is, right? Just don't expect them to make a yearlong bet asking people which console will rule by the end of 2007, because they know they'll never hear the end of appeals from gamers everywhere.
