Bungie: life after Halo, not restricted to Xbox 360 anymore

Bungie Not Limited to Xbox 360 with New IP - Image 1So Bungie is wrapping up its time with the Halo franchise with the last of the trilogy, Recon. Everyone's been asking what their plans are after Halo, but they've been pretty mum about it.

Bungie's PR and community director Brian Jarrard talks more on the studio's post-Halo future, from the challenges they face, to the expectations they have to live up to:

Halo itself was a bit of a perfect storm - there were a lot of things happening at the same time, and who knows if we'll ever hit that magic again. I certainly think that Bungie has an awful lot of really awesome game experiences and stories to tell.

They'll be very different - are they really going to catch on and become a pop culture phenomenon, spawn dioramas, and worldwide marketing campaigns? Who's to say?

I know the guys who are working on this project are really passionate and invigorated. A lot of it just seems to be going back to the old school vibe of Bungie - now there are guys just doing what they do best, being creative, unrestrained, thinking about what they want to do, and what is our next project? That's something we haven't done in a long time

One thing is clear though: they aren't tied down to the Xbox 360 and the PC anymore. If you remember, the studio split up with Microsoft last year. Now, non-Xbox gamers, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll stop being exclusive to the platform - it just means they have that option. Says Jarrard:

In theory we do have every means to go out and find the right ecosystem, the right partners, to align with. We're very happy with Microsoft, the Xbox 360's been great to us and they're a world class publisher. So who knows what the future will bring us.

"Halo itself was a bit of a perfect storm - there were a lot of things happening at the same time, and who knows if we'll ever hit that magic again. I certainly think that Bungie has an awful lot of really awesome game experiences and stories to tell."

HALO is the definition of over-hyped. It's an FPS where you play as a character as bland as paper. His name alone is enough to see it. "Master cheif?" That's like being named "Wet Liquid."

It adds no new elements to the FPS genre. It only made a good base because it was the only system seller on the xbox consoles which by the way, never have games until a HALO is released. It's the only game Microsucks rides on every year. The original Xbox just "aint had gaaaaames." That's why Halo became so popular amongst the Xbox fanboys. It was the only decent online FPS the Xbox had even though it sucked.

Every game in the HALO series ends up on on Pepsi cans and Burger King cups. Plus the endless commercials. Ive played halo 3. The gameplay is decent at best and the story is cliched. Don't fret if you xbots lose this game, MS will dose the game up behind ads and xbox bundles anyway. Resistance and Metroid, FPS' of other consoles are far better and combined, don't get even half as hyped as HALO alone.

Now flame me or down this comment if you want. That's how xbots behave anyway. They can't accept facts.

MS owns the Halo rights, not bungie. A marathon sequel is possible though.

» well..

Overhyped? YES. Overhyped, the definition of Halo? NO. Maybe its not as good as it pretends to be with the large marketing operations that surrounded it, but its fun. You can play 4 player split screen online, 2 players offline coop and 4 players offline battles. This is a console-style FPS and it does its job extremely well. Everything is balanced, maps are well-created and performance are great. 9,5/10? NO. The story is indeed cliché, Master Chief is a bad icon for the xbox and he looks retard, online community for the game s/cks (10 years old kids) and it sells too much for what it is. Even if I am a playstation fan, the only game up to date that can compete with the fun factor of all halos are: Timesplitter and Resistance 2 Beta (as the first one wasn't as fun as Halo (for the multiplayer)).

No.

Halo is great.

Whether it is on Xbox360, PC or PS3.

» yep

yep yep agreed, i somewhat liked halo, but somewhat way to overhyped, the only reason i liked it was the novelty of being able to finally play it

(i got the xbox, after the 360 went on sale, so it was somewhat dead, ive always been a sony fan, even though the make *****in retarded decision and have no common sense, yet somehow i feel theyre better, maybe its just the hardware i like and their software sucks, and microsoft would probably be the other way around)

anyway halo way to overhyped, and i feel reistance is a better game than halo, the only thing i really liked about halo was the jeep, and the suit thats it,

the story was so *****ing dreafully bad, it was unbelievable

» Oh god no!

The PS3 does not need Halo. EVER.

Sony doesn't need to copy MS's tactics by stealing exclusive games for the 360. Kaz was right. He would rather be shot in the head than have a 360 IP game on the PS3 and I don't blame him.

If Bungie want to create a new IP for both consoles then I'm all for it, but I'm not into this copycat bullsh*t that we've been seeing this generation.

» wow

wow...y is everyone hating on halo so much...i think it was a very good series...but as soon as the popularity roles in so do the haters and thats such a stupid reason to hate a game. But i could be wrong though maby people hate it cuz they suck...s*** id hate a game too if i sucked at it 3 times xD but o well...

» Not surprising..

Its a game you either love or hate, none of this middle *****. The console/pc gaming world is split 50/50 between halo lovers and and Halo Haters. Personally I loved it, but would rather play COD4 (multiplayer) or Half-life 2(single player).

But yes I am happy with the halo series and not afraid to admit it, there are a few better shooters though.

» halo

is probably one of the worst games iv ever played...just another rubbish shooter to me...

» !st half of Halo was great...

The 1st half of the game was great. There was AI enemys that made the game a bit fun. but as soon as the Flood came in, it was like the 1st DOOM. The whole game fell flat. Now Halo: Recon might be a better game. We shall see.

But, Halo over all. I have seen and played better FPS games over the years.

Yes, Marathon Sequel...sweet.

Though I do believe that Halo is a marathon sequel...though they could remake Marathon. I would pay for that.

Personally, I'm looking for them to do something on the Wii. Bungie is a great team, and could pull just about anything off. A really good shooter on the Wii would be nice.

» I have to agree with most of you.

Halo was overall a great series. But it indeed was too overhyped, and did fall short in many aspects. I think Halo 3 really fell off after Halo 2. Halo 2 was difficult to the point of playability, long, and had a great multiplayer (though I didn't do live on Halo 2, I just have lots of friends xD). Halo 3 was too short, with 15-25 minutes per level when Halo 2 was 40-60 minutes per level (depending on if you actually killed everyone or just ran through those who didn't need to be killed). The weapons of Halo 3 were great, but many of them handled better in Halo 2. I think the only thing Halo 3 has on Halo 2 is the vehicles. Halo 3 vehicles were great, and handled much better than those of 1 & 2.

When it comes to other FPSs, I would rather play HL2 single like ConXept said, but the better multiplayer is probably in GoW. I haven't played Resistance, unfortunitely, because I don't have any friends with a PS3...(like emcp said, PS3 trumps in hardware, but who cares id the software sucks).

Halo is good, but it could defenitely be better.

by Datnizzle - 2008-10-21 03:23
» I hate it because...

It was better on PC when they were still calling it Unreal Tournament.

by Uplink - 2008-10-21 17:43
» @Dat

Dont sully UT's name by calling it halo or anything like halo. Halo just sucks, Its just another sci-fi shooter that isn't as good as all the hype leads it to be.
