Bluetooth for Blu-Ray: The PS3 remote goes Bluetooth

Wii-MoteBlu-Mote

Ben Kuchera of ars technica thought he could use his nice universal remote with his PS3. Apparently he was wrong. Engadget reports that the remote works via Bluetooth. Wow... A Bluetooth remote for the Blu-ray player that's also a Blu-ray Game console with Bluetooth controllers. I wonder if a blue PS3 will be sold sometime soon?

Anyway, Ben complains that if Sony wanted the PS3 to integrate into his home theater, infrared should've been a no-brainer. He goes on to complain about many other bits concerning the Bluetooth remote, and he says that the balancing factor is the fact that the PS3 remote is huge and unattractive. Based on that statement, I assume that he'll probably not get the remote.

Anyway he's not what some of you would call a PS3 hater, far from it. In fact, he's quite worried about the safety and well-being of his pre-order at EBGamestop.

Some sharp comment posters have pointed out that the decision to go Bluetooth is a logical business one (in short: follow the money trail).

So what have we noticed here at QJ about the Sony remote? Some of us here feel that for a console that we'll obviously be getting, Sony could've at least made their promo pic for the remote a bit more differentiated from the Wiimote... God, November 17 just feels so far. Now I'm wondering if our pre-order is safe and secure.

remote

i don't see the need for a remote control, assuming the ps3 controler has all the movie functions on it..which i am sure it will.

?

U guys gotta admit that it is a little unatractive, they should have made something more futuristic, maybe aqua buttons or stainless steel frame, chrome, something like that.

another dumb qj comparison

lol, if you compare that remote to the wii controller thingy, you have to compare it to all remotes. Because, y\\\\\\\'know, all remotes are simmilar enough.

Actually we were comparing the promo pictures of the remotes and not the remotes themselves. We just found it a bit funny that the promo pictures looked quite similar. -Ian C.

good stuff

I am extremely happy to hear the controller is bluetooth as I have a HD projector ceiling mounted and to keep the ps3 close to the projector with cheap, short HDMI cables I am ceiling mounting the PS3 also. I will not have to point the remote behind me to change things. Altho, i probably wont bother buying it anyway as #2 states you can use the controller easily enough... what I worry about it if my technological intollerent parents wanted to watch a movie or somthing then they wouldn't be able to figure out the controls. If this does happen I'll force them to buy the remote.

About the promo pic comparisons...

How else would you promote/advertise a remote?! You need to take a pic of the remote where all the buttons are shown (ie. not sideways) and you need a hand in there to show relative size. Geez, people are really making a big deal out of every little thing nowadays...

Yep, you're right. It isn't a big thing, it's just something we noticed that we think is amusing, a bit funny, and slightly entertaining -Ian C.

I'm 100% certain there will an after-market solution...

... for those who must have their IR. Peripheral makers like Mad Catz, Pelican, Datel, etc. will no doubt come out with wired controllers and IR remotes/receiver using the USB ports.

How stupid is this.

Did the PS2 come with a infrared detector NO . So what mister I have a Remote for everything in my house cant use the Blu ray remote ! After all they came out with a infrared for the PS2 what would stop them from making one for the PS3 absolutly nothing you friging remote idiot.

would an adapter work?

I was thinking "Hey... sony will just release a USB adapter to allow for IF" but... if th remote doesnt have the part in it to send the IF signal it wouldn't work... tho... it might be an idea for other 'non-bluetooth' remotes.

"new"s?

I don't really get it. Where's the "new" part in this "news"? PS3 has Bluetooth Controllers so a Bluetooth remote seems like a logical result to me. If the remote works the same like the PS2's we don't need it anyway actually, cause every option is available with the controller as well (maybe a bit more difficult because you have to choose the options with the D-Pad). I'm interested if the PS3 is also connectable with other Bluetooth devices like cells. Especially when it's a Sony Ericcson. All infos official: http://eu.playstation.com/ps3/

some people

like a remote over a controller. Seems more real in a sense. And why is he getting all hell bent on bluetooth tech. it's only the new way to do things and sony is all about new

remote

maybe some 3rd party company will make a universal remote with IR and bluetooth so u can controll the ps3 from anywhere and still controll ur tv and stuff with one remote but its not really that big a deal

Dude

BlueTooth the is the *****. It's the future. Why the ***** is this dude hating on BlueTooth? Idiot. Just get any BlueTooth device and it can control the PS3. What's the hard about that? *****ing hater.
by - 2006-10-12 08:44:05
yes it did

do you even have a ps2 because every ps2 has a infrared detector. like da v
by - 2006-10-12 10:47:26
wrong

Every PS2 does not hace an infrared sensor you idiot only the newer one did. The original PS2 did not come with infrared. Which by the way my original PS2 still works just fine too
by - 2006-10-12 10:50:37
I agree

It is a little on the plain side. It's long and flat and theres no flare to it at all. I hate to say this but the 360's remote is much sexier.

True for the early models

Erm... it's BlueTooth, not BlueRay. (Easy mistake) It is true that the early PS2 models didn't have an integrated IR receiver for the remote control. But, if you purchased the remote extra (either Sony or 3rd party), it came with an IR receiver that plugs into a controller port. Thus, the PS2 remote control functionality was IR. I'm actually not surprised that the PS3 remote is BlueTooth. The PS2 saw the remote as a controller, makes sense that the PS3 would see it's remote as a controller. (Only 1 control signal API to cover several devices.) I see this as a marketing oprotunity for the 3rd party manufacturers. An IR remote to BlueTooth converter to allow people to use their universal remotes with the PS3.

Puh-leeze!

"Sony could've at least made their promo pic for the remote a bit more differentiated from the Wiimote..." Um, yea - perhaps they could have photographed it with a left-handed person - or maybe with someone's FOOT! C'mon - that's like picking on car manufacturers for photographing their cars from the same angle. Or were you hoping to see a nice jungle scene behind the remote?
