Bu-ray discs - Image 1If the prediction of Taiwan-based optical disc drive (ODD) makers are correct, then we just might see a drop in the production cost of Blu-ray disc players. According to their forecast, the media player will drop from US$ 99.99 to as much as US$ 50 by the year 2010.

As it stands today, production costs of a BD player are at US$ 100, including pick-up heads and chipsets, which, according to the source, account for 50% and 25% respectively. Obviously, if production costs fall, then retail prices will also fall -- or at least that's how it should go logically.

anything for a price drop? it's the best blu-ray player and was once the cheapest too. if it isn't the best blu-ray player, maybe then they should drop the price.

» Prediction?

So they "predict" that a mass produced item will get cheaper as time goes on... wow! They are truly wizards if not gods! how can any mortal aside from nostradamus himself make such a forecast?!

AMAZING!

» Price drop for customers?

I doubt it, the extra money made by companies will probably be used to increase marketing, so they can take advantage of people who are richer and willing to pay more, that's money that gets wasted if you cut the retail price early.

Then later, months later, they'll cut the retail price to get sales from people with smaller wallets.

Most people can easily paid for a 100-200 blu-ray players. It is just that hte Blu-ray movies need to drop in price by 5-10 to replace dvd.

» So?

I mean, really: so? --Isn't that the nature of doing Business? You don't "drop your pants" if you don't have to. And, really: it was hard enough getting Blu-ray started amidst the Format War with HD-DVD ....is it not logical to recoup some of that expensive marketing that's ALREADY been done to advance the format? You make it sound like manufacturers only exist in this game so that they can sell everything $1 about cost ASAP for you (regardless if you'll pay more or not). I don't want to get raked over the coals any more than the next guy ....but it's only reasonable that manufacturers will need to glean a little bit of extra profit out of this when they can. .....Figure: what's the NEXT step? If they bring prices down too low this or next year, what's the next electronics revolution? (And how much will THAT cost manufacturers to get into the mainstream and adopted, so that they can make back some of their INVESTMENT?)

Just like DVD players, they'll be $39.99 before you know it. When DVD first came out it was extremely expensive too.
