Bethesda Reacts To Three Major Fallout 3 Criticisms - Image 1

You love it or you hate it, but you damn well better play it. Bethesda received a lot of criticism for their work on Fallout 3 (PS3, Xbox 360), particularly on how it compared with the previous games. Now it's Bethesda's turn to respond to those critics.

MTV listed down three criticisms we usually hear from gamers, and gave executive producer Todd Howard a shot at answering them, and here's what he said:

Criticism: #1: “Fallout 3″ is just mediocre when judged as a first person shooter

Howard: Agreed.

Criticism #2: The ending isn’t very satisfying and much shorter than other “Fallout” endings

Howard: Based on the feedback I’ve seen, most people are pissed off that it ends, not the ‘ending’ itself. Maybe that’s one and the same, I don’t know. That’s another thing we’re changing in DLC3 [downloadable content #3, "Broken Steel"]. We really underestimated how many people would want to keep playing, so that’s probably the last time we’ll do something like that.

Criticism #3: V.A.T.S. is boring once youÂ’re accurate enough to head shot everyone

Howard: Depends on what you find entertaining. I like to blow people’s heads off, so, well, it never got old for me. I agree that the ‘to hit chance’ for head shots is probably too high.

Unfortunately for PS3 gamers, Bethesda won't be distributing the DLC that allows post-ending play to the Sony console. For now, at least. Who knows, perhaps the DLC deal with Microsoft was only for a timed exclusive, like BioShock.

BS

I'm pretty sure it was the ending itself that pissed me off.

Mediocore at best

These "non-linear" rgp were never my cup of tea, but I was told I had to play fallout 3 by everyone I knew so I did. It's really obvious to me that Bethesda has ZERO story telling talent. The ending isn't what pissed me off... it was the short story that got me there. Open ended and only 2 hours of play time long? The story was so dry, predictable, and boring I was just sad. There was no character development (which you really cant do when your gender / character itself are undecided for the people writing the script). I think Ill go back to JRPG, where plot >> shiny graphics. I mean come on the amount of time spent doing the graphics for vault 101 alone took more time then the one armed monkey they used to pent the script. The only DLC I would even consider, would be the only one the PS3 wont get.

"Pretty sure"?

You don't know what you're thinking?

My biggest beef

is the level cap. There's still a ton to do and I've been avoiding the main story line so the game doesn't end, but with a level 20 cap, now I'm like "why bother doing any more quests?" For that matter, "why bother even finishing the game?"

uuhh

Maybe to, you know, play the quests? They're actually pretty fun and engaging. Maybe you should focus on a different genre if all you care about in RPGs is getting more xp...

Level cap increasing

The 3rd DLC (the one which lets you carry on after the ending) is supposed to raise the level cap to 30.

Master Chef

Isn't that the whole point of RPG is to level up and explore? If it's locked at 20 then it seem kind of pointless to keep on going forth. You're actually doing all the killing for nothing.
