Bethesda prefers Xbox 360 as native dev platform, hints Fallout 4

Fallout 3 - Image 1

Peter Hines of Bethesda Softworks was recently in London to show off the upcoming Fallout 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC). While doing so, he was asked a few questions that revealed some interesting answers.

In a conversation with Tech radar, Hines was quoted as saying that the devs over at Bethesda prefer the Microsoft Xbox 360 as the model platform where they make their games first. The PC and the PlayStation 3 came in later.

Hines explained that the primary reason why they didn't develop natively on the PC is because they wanted to avoid guessing what configurations people already have on their systems. Combinations of RAM sizes and graphics card setups would have been troublesome to deal with for the devs.

"Obviously we are more familiar with the Xbox because we are familiar and the other thing is that the Xbox is much easier to take to tech shows," said Hines as he explained that it was handy to have the hard drive pop in and out off Xbox 360s so they wouldn't have to carry the whole thing while they travel.

And if you're thinking that Hines would blame the PS3's architecture for not doing it on the platform first, you're dead wrong. He said no such thing that could tick owners of the Sony console.

Finally, the developer gave a blunt hint that they won't stop making Fallout games just yet as he told the press "we didn't buy the Fallout franchise to just do Fallout 3 and then stop". We'll be watching out for announcements on the fourth one, then.

The bit about being able to remove the hard drive. Is it really that hard to carry with it in? I would think that ginormous power supply would make it more difficult to lug around. Everything about that statement is flimsy except that the 360 has been out a little longer so it would obviously be easier to develop for.

Come on guys if you could shell out 400-600 dollars why not throw down 250 for the superior version of Fallout? Stop being sad fanboys and man up to hardcore gaming by buying both great consoles?

Bethesda, this is awesome. I figured this was true. You gave us Oblibion and soon will hand us Fallout 3. Many developers have said that they prefer the 360 cause it's been easier to develop on during this gen; but PS3 development is also gaining momentum, cause developers are finally understanding how it works and what it can do.

And yes, I'm a 360 fan. To the large percentage of you who have gone mainstream and now call everyone opposing your console "fanboys", actually end up proving to us that you yourself are one. It's irony mixed with *****ing, and it couldn't be funnier. In other words, save it.

# Haha, your insulting my 360 PowerPack!Sanzee 2008-08-02 10:24
I'm guessing that sony fans have now moved on from bashing Halo, to talking ***** on... the 360 Powerpacks? You know... I had NO idea they were as big and heavy as you're saying they are. But hey, I give you props for trying. I was hoping that 360 haters wouldn't have to resort to mocking the 360 console accessories and their apparant inconveniences. I guess that means we're doing all the important things right.

Oh, If you've ran out of ideas on what to hate us for, here are some I've seen being bashed on lately:

- Disc Trays

- Bill Gates

- Bethseda preferring to develop on the 360

- Big Powerpacks (I love it)

- The scene in the movie Transformers where a 360 is shown (and not a PS3), which transforms into a killer robot.

Those were posted by some of them. The other 95% just said something about us being fanboys. That word lost its value when they started saying it in every post.

Haha. still, that powerpack comment he left was funny as hell.

I honor your opinion, but i must say, your loss man.

Plus I don't believe fallout will be oblivion with guns, it looks like an incredible game in its own right.

Go Bethesda, prove what you've been proving for a decade.....

You can make incredible games.

When you develop games on a system, you have to write code. To make writing code easier, developers use tools. These tools are more common or more easily used in the 360 and PC. Because they are quite the same. PS3's is just different. Not better or worse, mind you, just not as common or some, non existant. I don't know personally as I have never written code for a PS3. I'm just adding all the pieces together from what different devs have stated. Including Sony 1st party. Bethesda is just making a statement that they like the ease of carrying a HDD on a plane to wherever they are going and can snap it into a 360 already at their destination. It has nothing to do with power supplies. Besides, DVD spin and read faster than Blu-Ray creating more heat then Blu-Ray. The power supply being external was the best option for the 360. I've learned to live with it knowing my system has never overheated for any reason. So it's a pretty cheap shot at something that isn't really relevant. Sorry Bryden but your observations are usless. -V
