Anticipating the launch of the Mothership Zeta DLC for Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360 and PC, MTV Multiplayer asked Jeff Gardiner of Bethesda via an email interview if it would be possible to raise the level cap from the current 30. His answer: it's not advisable as it could make the game unbalanced.

The existing level cap of 30 was set forth by the Broken Steel DLC. Explained Gardiner, "I know from the outside this seems like a fairly simple proposition, but doing this could unbalance the game in a variety of ways."

He did not go on to further elucidate these "variety of ways", but he did say that Fallout 3 (also available on PS3) was intended from the start to be replayed several times anyway, from a variety of different character types. Therefore, if you'd like to enjoy the game more, you can always start from scratch. But don't worry, he did not entirely close the door on possible increases in level for the future:

We're very happy that people enjoy Fallout 3 so much that they want to keep playing it, and I'm sure we'll look into addressing these concern in future games.

At least it wasn't an outright "no", right?

Raising the level cap to 30 already made it easy to max out the characters stats. The only thing I really want from leveling is when you reach max level the cha-ching sound stays. The game feels weird without the money sound. Another thing that I wanted them to do is make it harder to reach level 30.

Anyways they need to stop making DLCs and actually make a sequel. All these DLCs are just eating away my money little by little(smart marketing but not cool).

the ka-ching and the drum roll when levelling up is cool.. and when reaching lv 30 the perk that can be obtained is kinda buffed (SPECIAL all 9's)... dlc's are a waste of money imo and a sequel is way better... c'mon bethesda..

With careful planning and the Comprehension perk as well as the will to hunt down most of the skill books, you can already max out your stats at level 20.

Levelling after this (as with Broken Steel) basically became useless except for a few perks I didn't have.

they could say... increase the stats for each ability... and then more levels would have more to strive for.

on the pc version there are some mods that raise the cap past 50 and dont cause an imbalance, mainly because they adjust other aspects of the game while they do it... i guess its too difficult for "official" developers to do this i assume.

whats with the meant to be "replayed several times anyway, from a variety of different character types" comment. Is that we would call an excuse, to make up for a lack of something missing in the game? like variety or content.

so in other words we have to quit playing our current game to play in a different aspect to satisfy the lack of variety?

they want the game to be played more than once. it makes its length greater and most developers should wants this.

you dont take a game back all the time after beating it, do you?
