Bethesda defends the "3" in Fallout 3 |
Ó
Just in case you've been living under a rock: Fallout 3 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) was released yesterday and it's bloody marvelous.
Already scoring over 90% on Metacritic across all platforms, most critics and users agree that it's a great game worthy of the venerable franchise. There's just one problem: It doesn't quite feel like Fallout.
I guess turning an old-school RPG into a shooter would do that.
One has to wonder why Bethesda didn't simply release the game as "Fallout" rather than attempt a more direct connection with the previous two titles. After all, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel didn't claim the Fallout 3 name and they only changed the focus of the gameplay and not the gameplay itself.
Dropping the "3" certainly would have made things easier for them. Making a true sequel means to live up to the standard of the previous games, not just remaking the game in their own style. It means fans like myself would be examining the game under a microscope waiting to pounce on the smallest detail deemed "unfaithful" to the series. Simply put, it's a lot more work with a stiffer grading curve.
Pete Hines was quizzed exactly on this topic during an interview with MTV Multiplayer some time ago. “There’s only one ‘Fallout’ ever. There’s only one ‘Fallout 2,’” he said. “Those games will always exist and we didn’t want to do anything that was seen as trying to start over again."
He further explained how they wanted to continue the legacy of the previous games, not overwrite them. "Honestly, we never really seriously considered anything else. It’s the next ‘Fallout’ game," he said.
I bought my copy yesterday and I for one, am glad for the "3".

It doesn't matter what they SAY cause they have already shown that the game itself is not Fallout 3. It's not even a Fallout game at all. It's just Nuked Oblivion: Featuring Guns.
When I played into the first half hour of the game it did remind me of Oblivion. Some of the characters faces in Fallout did remind me of some of the characters in Oblivion. I wonder if they used a similar character creation engine. It wouldn't bother me if they did because they game looks and feels astounding. They did a really good job in making the game having two elements, those being a FPS/TPS and a WRPG.
For any of the users out there who think I am bashing either game in any way, you are completely wrong.
Fallout 3 is really amazing for what it is. I walked out of the vault and into the rubble and walked in a circle thinking "God, this is what culture shock must be". Did everything in the vault like a good character then extorted money out of the first person I ran across.
Yeah, it's a little like Oblivion. That slightly insane character in that one town that wanted you to kill the people that were spying on him? Yeah, sort of like that. Turn him in and get him killed, lie to him and defend kill him, or follow his insane plot and kill the "spys".
*Spoiler*
Come to think of it, I don't think I blew up a town in Oblivion. At least not that I can remember. Certainly not with a nuke.
playing this game!!!! someone take it away from me! on second though, that wouldn't be good for your health.
