BBC reviews Killzone 2: realism so good it might start debate in video game violence

One of the models used in the Killzone 2 trailer shown at E3 has the same amount of polygons as an entire level of Killzone on the PS2. That's how much detail is expected with Killzone 2, and what had fans go all ga-ga when the first solitary screenshot was released. But aside from the rich hyper-reality of the game, what else should we expect? BBC offers us a glimpse.

BBC's review was only drawn from one level of Killzone 2, but it is already lauded and predicted to be "one of the most cinematic and immersive games ever produced on a console." The level in BBC's spotlight starts with airborne troops landing on a war-torn street as lightning flashes in the background. Sounds like they played the level featured in E3.

The downside? Aside from not having much innovation in gameplay - "it is a classic run and shoot adventure, mixing different weapon types and simple tasks to good effect" - the writer suspects that the violence in the game will certainly earn it an M certificate and might spark another debate over photorealistic violence in video games.

Although such a prophecy coming true would spell trouble, it does say a lot about how good the game's graphics really are. "The one level I played had been in development for the last six months, and with such hyper-real detail it is easy to see why the game is not due for release until 2008."

Aside from that and a few things still in development, the review is all aces. The reviewer compares it to the first Killzone which he describes as glitchy and buggy, with poor AI and an awkward interface. This is completely overturned in Killzone 2 with excellent enemy AI and a "solid control scheme."

The review ended on a note of high hopes and what could probably be described as reverence:

The developers behind the game I spoke to exuded a tangible confidence when talking about the game; Guerrilla and Sony know they have a special title on their hands. [...] The high watermark for realism and immersion in videogames could soon be about to be lifted.

1 Good graphics.

2 awful control for fps aka PS controller.

3 it will fail with the virus marketing of Halo 3 in sales, but it will sell well.

4 too much Hype.

5 PC can give the best graphics (if that maters only, but it doesn't).

I have admit that Halo 3 is goin to be killzone thoughest competion, but Halo doesnt look as good as killzone 2. Halo 3 graphics and physics

are outdated. To me...Halo 3 still uses last gen technology. So dont even compare killzone to Halo. The only reason why halo is selling so well...its cause its a FAD!!! Its single player isnt all that good, as you guys say. I only keep buying the Halo game ONLY FOR MULTIPLAYER!!!

(BTW, a hands on preview is not a review!).

Since when do we gamers trust the views of companies like the BBC for opinions on games? No disrespect, but companies like the BBC are the last places I'm interested in when it comes to games.

What next, a hands-on preview from NBC telling us how one level in Halo 3 was the greatest gaming experience he'd ever had? No thanks, I'll take the views of reviewers from dedicated games websites and magazines each time.

Besides, Killzone 2 hand-on previews have been covered in great detail already by ALL the game websites and magazines since E3. All were impressed by what was shown (especially the realtime cut-scene), and the gameplay graphics were very good (albiet low texture detail), but to be honest, it was no better than games we'd seen already, especially games like COD4 (which was more impressive imo).

I look forward to Killzone 2 (and yes, Halo 3 being a FPS fan), so I'm not going to join in with the brainless Killzone 2 vs Halo 3 cr@p, but for me, this report about Killzone 2 coming so long after E3 is rather pointless.

The 360 controller is more comfortable than the Sixaxis in my opinion. The way the thumbsticks are placed is what makes the difference. Sixaxis has them in the same place, and when you push both sticks towards the center your thumbs hit together, with 360 this is not possible. The L2 and R2 buttons seem too far out on the Sixaxis as well. I also personally think its a bit too small, and most definitely too light.

There are also those who say that the battery pack on the 360 controller gets in the way. I dont suffer from this problem, but I can imagine some do. Also, the directional pad for the 360 blows.

But in the end, if youre talking about comfort, then I would go with 360s controller. I dont see what the big fuss is over the DualShock / Sixaxis design. Its not that revolutionary in my opinion.

Sarcasm aside, I partially agree with you with what you said about graphics and gameplay. Gameplay comes first, however graphics immerse the player in a realistic world that can have an adding effect to the overall enjoyability of the game. Would you rather shoot demons in the original Doom or aliens in Halo 3. I'd go with the latter.

Halo was a huge disapointment for me, I had heard so much about it, and when I played it it was okay, but nothing more, there are too many FPS games out there that is way better! looking forward to this though espescially since I have to buy a PS3 because of MGS4 (If it hadn't been for MGS4 I would have owned a 360 a long time ago).

Next-gen started when the 360 was released, and whilst there are many PS3 games I'm looking forward to, Killzone 2 is not one of them (at least, not yet).

cell chip broadband, and rsx chip nvidia equals dead box 180 oblitorated. capable of powers unachievable on the dead box 180. lets get the facts straight here, the most technologically advance graphics in a game always push the sales of that said game, examples, donkey kong country on super nes, golden eye on n64, perfect dark n64, shadow of the collosus ps2, zone of the enders ps2, halo 1 scratch box, halo 2 scratch box. when halo 2 was released, there weren't any fps good enough in the graphics department to compete with halo 2. i bought halo 2 and i thought it sucked, the online was ok but remember now, a lot of people bought it cause it was a pretty game,. anyway, gears single player was short and pretty and was about an 8 out of 10. the graphics of gears made that game sell alot. killzone 2 is pre pre alpha and people that played it for real says its the best looking game on a console. this game didnt have the final animation and graphics fully layered on yet since its still in pre alpha. the beta of killzone 2 is going to be sick and all i would love to see now is just videos of how it will look. killzone 2 will sell out of stock like peter moore selling out from microsoft cause they are failing. the fact is this, killzone 2 will sell like crazy, does it have good graphics, i will have the best graphics on a console ever, does it have game play, people who played it said the gameplay was crisp and solid, does it have a fan base, im a fan of killzone liberation and killzone from ps2 along with many others. ps3 killzOWNED the dead box 180.

ok ive been with sony all my life. Started with a psx,then ps2. Loved it. but when xbox came out, no one liked it cuz it had that big ass controller. the only game that really was good was halo. it was cool. then in 2004 i bought the xbox halo special edition console and i bought halo 2. Those were the only games i bought. halo2 on xbox live is the best fps game ever and is still today. go to bungie.net and check the people who are logged in on xbox live. same as a year ago. i didnt really like thee other xbox games cuz they werent really that good and when they came out they were at 50 dollars. when u wait a month it becomes 39.99 then to 29.99 then to freakin 19.99 within a 7 month period. waste of money. there werent any good games except halo on the 360. xbox had better graphics but good only one good game. i said to myself, man i wasted 300 + 50 and 2 controllers just for halo. well to me halo 2 was worth it,not the other game. Now in 2006 september. i bought a 360 because i had the money and i was going to get one any way just for halo 3. no good games were out. from the xbox 360 launch they had project gotham and call of duty and dead rising. It was all crap. project gotham sucked ass . call of duty 2 was ok i guess. they milked it till gears came out. dead rising is freakin stupid. all these games were once 60 dollars. now there 29.99. too much hype on these games. especially dead rising and project gotham. what i bought is dead or alive 4 and nba 2k7. best fighting game on the 360.all these games are only good for a rent but not a buy. then i bought gears. graphics were great story was great . then the matchmaking was crap. the online was crap. campaign was awsome. especially the online coop. this game is not a fps its a third person shooter. it does have fps (frames per second) but not (first person shooter) when i search for a ranked game it was horrible. it always says network error. the ranking system is crap. playing gears online for the billionth time is boring. theres always laggers. annoying 10 year olds cussing. you just kill each other. theres no capture the flag or assault. to me this game is worth buying. just for the campaign. trust me . youll play against alot of mexicans or hispanics cuz they seem to like this game. halo 2 has an awsome ranking system, theres clans, easy to join a game. fun games. now another thing is the call of duty franchise isnt gonna get better. call of duty 3 was rushed out too soon, now call of duty 4 comes out this year in nov or dec. same graphics but differnt wars. online sucks. in 2007 i bought a ps3. it came with motorstorm. graphics are amazing. but it gets boring. with only 10 months since the launch of the ps3. i hear xbox 360 people saying all this crap about the ps3. seriously i when the 360 came out i talked crap about it too. but ps3 just came out. not that many good games are out since launch. it was the same as the xbox360. it was jus dead rising and callof duty. how boring. all im just saying to xbox 360 people is to back off. wait 1 year in 2008 . then you can debate. i had to wait almost 2 years for a good game to come out for the 360. wait till 2008 , thats the year. game developers are making good games so they need the time. you dont want a game that comes out to early and the sequel comes out 5 months. not enough time to make a good game. there are many game developers working for games for the ps3 . thats even more then the 360. remember japan makes great games. not just america. halo 3 will be the best game on the 360 but whats after that except gears of wars 2 , nothing. while with ps3 theres gonna be more games . i guarantee you that 75 percent of gow players will play halo 3 and wont go back playing gow.to me this is xboxs year but in 2008 its gonna be the ps3s year. trust me no stop fighting and end this. kill zone. hmm when i played the first one it got me dizzy cuz the screen kept shaking. i dont know about the newest one that is coming out. ill buy it for sure cuz i dont have that many games for the ps3.

game develper need more time because of graphics. trust me i know. i used to work for EA. they make games through a university. as a project. it takes time for artist to make a game detailed and in high def. you guys want high def games dont you. just wait till 2008. ps3 will own. these people just dont now how hard to make a game and when you have a short amount of time. the audio the bitmapping all that

The Xbox 360 controller pisses me off. I can't stand having the analog sticks asymmetrical. Same goes for GC, Xbox 1 and occasionally the PSP, but on the PSP the D-pad and analog nub usually have the same function anyways.

My friend told me about this site and how everyone always argues about what console is better. and bla bla bla bla.. I'll tell you right now i have a ps3 i've seen the videos of the new games comin out and im impressed. My friend has an xbox so i no about the games for the 360 as well. to me there all the same. Even though i agree that halo has better weapons its basically the say thing as Resistance(sep for coop online). Gt5(gran turisim) Is the same as project gothan on 360. It all the same. The reason i got ps3 is because of killzone, heavenly sword, etc. I actually wanted the 360 cause all my friends have but it was a little too expensive(wirel ess pack, Hd dvd, Etc) To be honest and not fanboish, the ps3 is the better only because of the psp connectivity and home coming out. As for halo, i was a fan of halo on pc but to me the 360 versions were all the same. Kinda like NINJA gaiden. If people buy a six hundred dollar system for one game then its not worth it. Too be honest i only see maybe two or three games for the 360 worth getting(Halo maybe, Gears of wars and maybe blue dragon) When i saw games like resistance and heavanly sword(games with creativity) Ps3 was the one. All i'm saying is that everone has different opinions and its not right for people to look down on something they don't like or agree with. Both system are great i would get both if i had money but to be honest i recommend the Ps3 not only for its creativity but because Sony is the most generous game company
