BBC on the UK launch: Sony gave away free TVs |

A BBC report on the PlayStation 3 launch in Europe informs that apparently, everyone who bought at PS3 at the London launch also received a free 46-inch HD television and a taxi home. In total, the giveaway amounted to UK£ 250,000 worth of televisions. In fact, according to the report, it seems that Sony has declared its launch of PlayStation 3 to date as a success. They even said that early sales of the PS3 is faster than those of its predecessor, the PS2.The BBC coverage then goes on to note the safety-precautions and the care that Sony Official retail partner, Virgin Megastores, took to ensure a gamer friendly and comfortable launch.
Fellow QJ Blogger, Ceasar S. noted: "Welcome to London's PlayStation 3 fever, people." Well, that's not a very nice way to put it, but you can't blame him really, especially given the mild outcome of the midnight Aussie Launch .
Oh, and since I'm in the mood to quote people right now, here's what the folks from SPOnG had to say about the UK launch - the Pre-Launch to be specific - just because the BBC weren't the only guys there:
both Channel 5 and ITN news crews were behind SPOnG in the queue to interview the first few in the PS3 queue, with a growing crowd of both specialist and mainstream journalists gathering behind them. Cynics might say that there were more press there than punters. And they would be correct, but hey, that's kind of THE POINT.

that pisses me off too. Although I think that's great and all, why can't US get that too???
and they get free coffe and donuts , and get to sleep in a store, and a tv worth like $1,500 its not fair , so of course its like bribing them to buy a ps3, for the price of 3 ps3's, sony should have used the money from the free hdtv's to give people money to buy ps3's ..... im saving up to buy a

Totally ridiculous. Why do we have to suffer? Why can't we get offers such as that? We're the guys shelling out tons of money, yet no free television set. Absolutely bad PR they got going.
I seriously doubt they gave out thousands of free tvs... But if they did, more power to em! I wish I got one :(
and yet people *****ed to no end that the UK was getting the shaft because Sony was releasing the PS3 6 months after the US and Japan got it.
*****ed that the price of the PS3 was too high, and that the lack of 100% compatability made the price that much harder to swallow.

England is one of SONY's best play station selling points.
i'd buy a ps3 if they gave me a tv to play high def on it

They gave us a HD TV because we had to wait longer than you to play it, and you also get Emotion Engine we don't.
Devise are you stupid are just crap at maths. TV's cost £2500. So divide £250,000 by £2,500 (I will wait while you get a calculator) now what does that equal?...... ONE THOUSAND!

You are all talking like Sony popped down to their local electrical store to pick up TV's to give away! ... THEY MAKE EM! , they probably cost next to nothing to make so hence next to nothing to give away. They didn't pay retail prices which incidentally is not £2500 , more like £1000 for a tv that size in the UK.
It's not about desperation or anything like that , it's about keeping brand loyalty.
Think how much MORE they are charging for the PS3 in the UK(100s more) than the USA etc maybe thats a hint on how they can do it.
And if MS would of done the same sort of thing we would of heard how Evil etc etc MS is to do such a thing and just using its money etc etc..
The fact that Sony announced the 100 free HD TVs just MOMENTS before the launch means that they could not have used this as a way of generating false demand.
If Sony said that this was going to happen perhaps like a few days or a week before the launch, then I could see this as an act of desperation, but unfortunately this wasn't the case.
I think it is great for the people that got it - good for them. Wish that I could have been there.

Jesus *****ing christ grow a backbone. Sony release the ps3 6months later than the rest of the world, and cripple the machine to make it cheaper to manufacture. It's the least that they could *****ing do.
The free TV's weren't announced prior to launch so that it was impossible to drum up publicity. Sony aren't stupid, if they did announce it, muggers would be waiting around the corner for somebody to walk out of a shop with £3000 of stuff on them. Easy targets.
They were giving away to improve the view of Sony in the public's eye, before the launch Sony weren't very favourable in the publics view so this is to say, "look we aren't that bad, we gave away a few of our top of the range tvs, good things happen when you buy Sony products" etc etc.
Stop *****ing whining about the UK getting a good deal for the first time in years and just think, everything in your country costs half as much as it does here. $600 = about £315 here, yet we get charged £425 for a inferior version of ps3?

In the US and Japan, it was not yet well known the PS3 is a turd. Hell I sold a Japanese import I bought for $1000 from Play Asia for $1825 on ebay! It's fun profiting of peoples' stupidity.
Now they have to bribe people to get sales. Sad.....
