Jack Tretton's statement - Image 1This brings the term "awkward silence" to new highs and yet another reason why gaming magazines deserve to live: there are some things you just can't believe till it's on print.

An interview in the latest issue of EGM features Jack Tretton defending Sony's new console. It seemed, however, that the heat of the moment got to him, as there's a decidedly show-stopping quote from him that's already getting picked up by blogs everywhere.

Talking about lackluster sales and PS3 scalpers with EGM, Tretton drops a bomb on readers, saying:

If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it. I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that there's not a single retail location in America where there's a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They've all been sold in a matter of minutes.

Now, before you start sending him pictures of unsold consoles and reports of lackluster sales, here's a quick note. EGM says that the interview happened in Early January. Expect Tretton's comment to get its proper spin very soon.

Consoles were sitting on shelves earlier January too. This guy is doing the best he can to keep shareholders happy. I wonder what he is going to say when Sony can't reach their 6 million march 31st target. At some point Sony is going to have to face facts and stop hiding from their mistakes. Their PS3 has been on a downward slide for over a year now. Time to face reality and more towards growing from that. Saying that you had a successful launch and calling the very popular Wii a gimmick, is only going to attracted bad press when your console is performing badly in sales, news media, blogs and some of your own fans.

I respect you for not doing any "FIRST POST" crap. I also agree with you 100%, I feel sorry for Sony kinda. They did so well with the PS2, but ever since they brought the PSP along they've been lying and going downhill ever since =(

The PS3 is doing better than the PS2 did over the same time period after launch, and we all know which console dominated the last generation.

and if people were to place bet's on peter moore's 10 million consoles speech--say about how many months ago?--then we'd be millionaires. what exactly is the big deal anyways? Jack, a rep of sony, is trying to defend the console. go figure huh.

This was taken in early January when no one could find a PS3 on the shelf.

There are still stores in my area in North Seattle that still have sold out PS3s, believe it or not.

Of course it is, the PS2 was only launched in Japan, March 2000. The released in North America on October 26, 2000 (7 months) and in Europe on November 24, 2000 (8 months).

And is the complete list of launch titles for the Japanese launch.

* DrumMania

* Eternal Ring

* FantaVision

* Kessen

* Stepping Selection

* Street Fighter EX3

* Ridge Racer V

That's it.

See how Sony likes to twist things :)

I believe sony is stocked up waiting to shortages to happen, but it's not wide spread. Go into the store(s) that don't have PS3s and ask them when their last shipment was.

# PS3 in Japan is dwindling awayGuest 2007-02-10 07:26
Well the Wii is totally destroying the PS3 sales in Japan by 3 to 1 and now the 360 sales are going up there to so I would predict that the PS3 as far as Japan goes it will eventually end up in Third spot.

I walked into a game store and purchased one last week without any problem. I asked again yesterday, and there isn't one to be found in my town. I can't tell from where I sit whether it's eager buyers or lack of supply.

the xbox sale suck in japan there are only a few people buying it cuz bluedragon. the ps3 is still selling ok in japan just not as good as wii. my local target store has both wii and ps3s. the psp is also selling pretty well. the only reason the ps3 is not selling is because they dont have a lot of game but a ton of games will come next month also tons of blu-ray movies. 1 of my friend has a wii and planing to get a ps3 because his dad want it for the blu-ray. im w8ing for singstar which is going to be awsum on ps3. and xbox360 did not sell 10mill they onyl shiped 10 mill look here http://vgcharts.org/

Sux that the Xbox360 is getting destroyed in japan by the PS3. I'm sorry, Blue Dragon won't save the 360 in Japan.

# 360 taking 2nd??Guest 2007-02-10 15:46
360 are getting up there?? at its height, from the BD boost, the 360 was getting beat by both the PS3 and the Wii by a large margin. even now that teh PS3 hype has died down, so has the BD boost. through Jan, 360 sales fell back down to what it was prior, and the PS3's weekly sales have still been several multiples higher. The Wii may win Japan, but the 360 is still FAR from being in any position to be anything but 3rd.

# ps3 from where I live were never on shelve.Guest 2007-02-10 16:29
if someone make a big deal out of it, he can simply reply that he said ON SHELVE, behind the counter and whatnot.

notice how Bestbuy have those ps3 on ground stacking on top of each other, or behind the counter on ground.

whatever he said is to have people think they can get around 600-700 dollar profit(499usd for 20gb) for buying some in stock for days, but what happen after? who do you contact?

Is the article even consider a contract?

if legal action ever happen, he will simply said he mentioned ON SHELVE, and really don't see any ps3 on shelve ever. Did any of you guys?

# my local best buy was sold out...Guest 2007-02-10 16:53
I live in Fort Wayne, 250,000 people...and my local best buy was sold out yesterday...don't know if the one on the other side of town was, but just figured I'd wait and try to get one next week rather than drive across town.

# Here's my opinionGuest 2007-02-10 19:55
I live in Georgia and when I go in Wal Mart there were three in the case and went back the next day and then there were none. The Circuit City I work at here we have 2 PS3's in the warehouse. I think the reason for that is because customers don't think we have them but they don't see them out on the floor locked up.

The people of japan are lets say smarter than most average americans. They know what is to come of the ps3. They know it will dominate, in one month the ps3 had sold more systems than the 360 did in its first full year! Nuff said.

Here in tyler TX every one of the 3 gamestops in town has AT LEAST 2 PS3's and a big sign out front that says "PS3 NOW AVAILABLE!" and they've been here more than a week.

Fun you would say that when Sony's end of 2006 target was 6 million, and ended up being 1.84 million and crushed all demand for the console.

I fact that the PS3 isn't selling out in Japan is a major problem. It's where sony has it's most loyal fans. The 360 started with very little fans in Japan because it's an American console. Your right that MS is going to remain in 3rd in Japan, but I'm amazed by it's recent sales figures, and give MS credit for not giving up on the region. More good Japanese 360 games will come.

and for what it's worth, they changed their goal to a more approachable number...say 2 million? all the while 360 had all those KILLER titles and it still didn't perk to 10 mill. say it however you like duddy, but a system just sold 2 million with 1 game and a 600 dollar price point. Obviously it isn't the money thats stopping them...maybe the lack of titles?

Darkelite, the reason they're not up for sale is because of those 2 PS3s are backups, in-case someone gets a faulty one and it needs to be replaced.
