Atari - Image 1A lot has already been said about Sony's PlayStation Home service. While this post doesn't add anything new to the previous discussions and conjecture about the service, it does add something else: possible competition.

According to CVG, Atari Online Entertainment senior vice president Chris Bergstresser has revealed to UK trade mag MCV that Atari is currently working on an ambitious community portal that is being billed as a possible Home-beater. Atari's new online initiative is slated to roll out in the summer and will initially appear on PC only.

"Let's just say it will be PC to start with," said Bergstresser. "I can't and I won't speak for Europe but presumably if it is a success in the US then yes, it will be coming to Europe. We would quickly open it up to other territories."

Bergstresser declined to give more details apart from hinting that their new service "goes further" than PlayStation Home and that the new service puts emphasis on user-generated content. "We feel user generated content is not just something you just let people dabble in," Bergstresser said, "we feel that it is something where you give people the tools to do whatever the hell they want."

More on this as additional details surface.

» oh damn

Atari is that disturbed old uncle with lots of money that keeps coming to dinner parties, but no one wants to tell him he's not welcome anymore.

Atari, please go somewhere and die.

Wow PC only! This is really going to break the console market war (hint of sarcasm). If they wanted something to break home they would need to impliment it on a console.

» Atari gonna fail

the way i see it, Atari is gonna make it "blow up" in PC in the summer so when Home comes out in september, everybody is already using "home-killer" on the PC. Then if it blows up, i GUARANTEE they'd put it on the 360...nice try atari but its not gonna work, reasons y:

1. Atari name is not as big as Sony name

2. Home was announced in GDC in front of thousands of ppl and since then have been building momentum, Atari just announced this and its supposed to come out in the summer.

More reasons than that but those are enuff

» good lord

will Atari just *DIE* already.

i worked for that company many moons ago, and really, just die.

they can't make good games, (Matrix titles, anyone), and they tarnish the ones that are good (Neverwinter Nights 2?).

go away.

your "Home beater," is going to fall flat. big time.

since the company is going through so much turmoil internally, they saw the idea of home as a "Cha-ching!" cash cow, while Sony's PS3 Home will generate some dough for Sony also, at least it's a meeting place for gamers to get together and game and socialize, and for free.

who the hell wants to meet up and play Atari games?

i also find it funny that this annoucement comes *AFTER* the Home announcement.

what, been working on it since March, eh, Atari?

» Lame`

This will most likely require Vista and will max our your memory and video card... And if Atari is doing it then instead of clan rooms in Home, Atari will have Frogger and Pong rooms....

» So let's see...

Atari is making a product that's:

- Like Playstation Home

- Only on PC

- Based around user-generated content

Perhaps someone should tell Atari that someone else has already made Second Life.

» Man!

Even pc content makers feel threatened! Whats next?

by hush404 - 2007-04-05 14:59
» lol exactly!

It's Atari! Come on! Also, it'll be a "here it is... please use it..." in a world on PC's where most people won't care. Also, any exclusive content... will be Atari content... and who really wants that?

Lastly, a huge project like Home with a backing of an entire console and company like Sony has a much better chance of bringing people in and getting it right.

» Second Life...

Based around user generated content... Wonder where that idea has come from.. cough second life cough. Hope second life sue them. No its not going to beat home, people like Nike and Adidas etc will have their own shops or booths in Home and it will be properly implimented because Sony is making home, i bet if other companied try to set up shop in the "Home - beater" it will get hacked.

» Sony or Atari who cares

Who cares Home sounds like a load of nonsense so I expect this to follow suit.

by Elliott - 2007-04-06 04:12
» C'mon Atari!

WTF is the point? Why you being a pain? They haven't got a consoles so why go extra and compete with Home? Geez, and I don't think it will work out on the PC becuz Home is directly on the PS3 where as Ataris 'Home' is gonna be on the internet, but if it was built-in everyone would use it. Its gonna be like Second-Life via the internet, what a shame.

Lol Atari vs Sony... I wonder who will win LOL.

Atari is getting a bit old now, they should give up.

» wtf?

it's on pc! what's the point in that, there are already lots of stuff you can do over the internet, what makes playstation home great is that you are playing on your tv on your console and can invite other people to join you in online console games. Plus this new crap is made by ATARI! don't get me started =/
