Wanna know what's the top ten list for the most popular PS1 games on the PS3's PlayStation Network? Of course you do. And Sony's dished out the info to Gamasutra, with some surprise to boot.

Taking the top spot for the most downloaded PS1 title is Street Fighter Alpha from Capcom, originally released on August 2008. Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (July 2007) comes in at second place, while Naughty Dog's Crash Bandicoot crashlands at third.

As for the rest of the list, most of them are from the backyard by Sony. Interestingly enough, Tekken 2 didn't even make it to the list, as well as the well-loved rabbit out to save the world, Rayman (Ubisoft).

Check out the top ten below:

» Why so much crash?

Ha, 3 crash games? Honestly?

Those are some solid hits there dude. Some SF, Castlevania, TM, Spyro damn I should be downloading some PS1 games! lol. The only one I bothered with was Destruction Derby... which should of been left as a memory.

we can only hope the FF and RE games get releases as well. i unno what are some games you'd all like to see on the PSN?

» 2d rocks!

2d doesn't age like 3d games do. I tried to play Perfect Dark and could barely tell what was going on, when I rocked it when it first came out. I was like, how is that a guys face? but I can play mario or metroid all day and don't feel outdated. 2d should never die, or so will a piece of my soul.

» Where's Suikoden?

Damn I was really hopeing to see Suikoden on that list, I'd love for the popularity to be high enough to bring Suikoden II to PSN, and enough to make Konami grave the PS3 with the possible future Suikoden VI

Sony just can't say, "Let's put this game, this game, and this game up for sale next week." They have to get licensing to sell those games, as well as find out a way to pay the original developers for their game if it's sold.

» i dont need to buy one.

» on PSN

Me thinks you missed a key part of this article: "...ON PSN" The list referes to the most popular PSX titles available on PSN, but clearly you know that and I'm tired since it's late and sarcasm sadly evades me at this hour.

Would really have liked to see Loaded, the RE trilogy, FF7-9, SFA2 and 3, and maybe One! Wow was that game eyecandy in it's time. Some Fear Effect would not be bad but that game didn't age well.

» Pah

It's still a chart of some of the PSOne's oldest and weakest games. Where's Klonoa? RE2? Marvel vs Capcom? Pah, could do better Sony, much, much better.

Hey, how come in Europe we still don't have Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (my most favorite PS1 game) and Spyro The Dragon (my girlfriends most favorite PS1 game)? What's going on there eh?

As much of a Street Fighter fan as I am I didn't purchase Alpha for PSN even despite the long wait for proper PS3 Street Fighter games. I have Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX on PSP which is far superior to anything the PS1 could manage in the 2D fighter genre. The PS1's poor crippled conversions of those games is the reason why I had a Saturn for those next to my PS1.

» Sad...

...because that's about the entire list of PS1 games on the U.S. Playstation Store.

p0op makes a good point here and one that does play a role. But I think the real issue on why FF7 isn't releasing on PSN is cause SE has actually considered and did say when the time is right, to remake FF7. I suppose they might add the original on the disc as well, but this wouldn't be surprised. Nomura and Kitiese(misspel led) both expressed interest of a remake, using PS3 as the platform, but the thing is, they're so busy with the other games, we probably won't see the title til the PS3 6th+ year of life. :)

» Yea

I kinda like that since it was a major pain in the ass when I was little to play doom on the Sega Gen 32bit accessory. Every time we rented a doom it didn't even work. >_<

Anyway, I know this isn't most on everybody's list, but I would be in heaven if Sony finds a way to put Road Rash 1-3 on the PSN. That game was the $hit back in the day on Sega. I had hella fun with it.
