Analysts: PS3 won't hit 11 million sales by March despite better sales

Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1Analysts have given word that PlayStation 3 sales will be falling short of the 11 million target set by Sony. This despite of the better sales the console has been showing ever since multiple prices cuts were made.

According to Daiwa Securities, Sony is expected to sell around 8 million PS3 units by March 31, missing its target by 27 percent.

Tokyo-based Mizuho Investors analyst Mitsuhiro Osawa shared the same sentiment, saying, "It's an industry consensus that PS3 sales will fall short of the target."

The President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kazuo Hirai, commented that they still haven't made any conclusion on whether they have to give up on hitting the 11 million shipment target. He added that it would depend on how aggressively dealers purchase Sony's PS3 inventory.

Despite the fact that Sony Computer Entertainment might not hit their mark, it is slowly recuperating its PS3 operating losses. The company was able to generate 12 percent of revenue from its game unit during the three months ending on September 30.

In addition, the Nikko Citigroup has given word that the higher sales and lower production costs should reduce the company's operating losses related to the PS3 by 90 percent to US$ 158 million in the fiscal second half ending on March 31.

They always fall short on shipment targets because they set them too high. It would probably look better if they were more realistic in their predictions. I think they need to add backward compatibility back to the 40gb model, especially since that's the only version in some regions.

I always wonder why they don't add PS2 compatibility to the 40GB model. The 60 GB haven't got more parts besides the USBs and the Cardreader. The compatibility works under an emulator. So why has the 40GB no compatibility?

Software can be added everytime......

Or did I miss something?

The 60 and 20 gb ps3 I believe has all or most PS2 components inside the system making PS2 playback much easier. In the 80 GB there is still some PS2 parts inside, but the parts that aren't there are being emulated. The 40GB however has none of the parts in the system, thus making it currently unable to play PS2 games. Who knows maybe in the future they'll find a way to handle the emulation of everything in the 40GB, but it's not very easy to do.

» My numbers are clearly off...

The web site that I sometimes check for console sales says that Sony already has 9 million or so consoles. By those numbers I thought it would be more realistic for them to reach 11. The site must be completely wrong with their figures then:

If anyone is interested.

Only the Emotion Engine and PS1 processor chips can be emulated with software. The Graphics synthsyser cannot be emulated by the PS3 and it isn't in the 40gb model. It probably wouldn't cost much more to use the GS chip again, and it would be a major selling point because the PS2 is still supported.

ahhh now I understand..... I didn't know that.

Thx @ SaintHobson + Mister Common Sense, for clearing that up!

People who are too cheap to spend an extra $100 on the 80GB model as opposed to the 40GB don't deserve backwards capability.. Or a card reader.. Or extra USB ports.

» I'm a bit confused here...

I know a lot of chart are not so exact but... the ps3 didn't sold 9 million already? and how will reach only 8 million by march... I don't know.. maybe I saw a website with the wrong numbers.. can someone give me a website with tru numbers?

by Steven777 - 2008-01-22 13:00
» 8 million from Mach 2007 to March 2008

They sold approx 2.5-3million between launch and March 2007, and they are getting 8 million sold as a possibility from March 2007 to March 2008.

vgcharts is right with there data, if they are off they correct it when the NPD releases their data or the company who makes the product does.

by hush404 - 2008-01-22 16:50
» hmm yeah

VGCharts iz suppose to be fairly accurate and credible too. Last time I checked there the PS3 was at 6mill, they must of added holiday sales I guess. Seeing the PS3 at 9.4 mill - I have no doubt that they'll reach a 11mill in march.

Heh, nice to see the PS3 catching up to the 360

by Oraichu - 2008-01-22 18:24
» Not so unlikely...

Dont really see the point in the discussion about it hitting the target or not, because if it dont, it will only be off by a half million approx... it's sold 9.4 million so far.

So it's asking for selling 1.6mill in a little over 2 months. PS3 sells at least 400k a month, so we could assume it would sell 1mill by March 31(This is of course if the sales dont increase nor decrease). Would be 10.4mill... as good as target reach from my perspective. Won't be any articles like "OH MY GOD THEY DIDNT REACH THEIR TARGET" with that low miss... unless they're completely retarded. =/

Just on a sidenote, I think the PS3 is doing pretty good now, I felt like it was gonna do total crap in the beginning. Alot of it being because of biased media against PS3, and I think this "feeling" have made some customers stay away from the PS3, it did to me. But now I am planning on getting one. ;)

by Mleep - 2008-01-23 01:15
» Hmm

I was going to mention vgchartz as well. They're usually fairly accurate, and according to it PS3 should have sold arround 9.4 million last I checked.

With Devil May Cry 4 coming out soon it should help some of those (including me) who have waited for some more good games to come out before purchasing one. I don't have a PS3, X360 or Wii, but I'll get a Wii for Smash now, and I'm going to pick up PS3 when DMC4 and MGS4 become available.

Because after that there will be a lot more games I'm interested in.

vgchartz is biased and not accurate. They never have the same numbers everyday.

Also Analysts apparently you still make wild predictions. Im not saying Sony will Surpass the mark come the end of the fiscal year. But As Reviewers claim DMC4 plays way better on the PS3, and this isn't my words there has been reviewers who has claimed this, and has played both versions. And if so i can expect a big boost of sales for the PS3 come release day for DMC4. Hell i expect this to make more sales for the fact that this game was made on the PS3 first then ported. So that gives Sony so added sales to reach close to there mark.

I can't say they will get 11 million Shipped but possibly 10.5. And even then that number is quite impressive.

So either way i still think Sony's system will have great shipment sales. Oh and btw don't forget GTA4 im sure that will also help sales for the PS3.

» Nah

"But As Reviewers claim DMC4 plays way better on the PS3, and this isn't my words there has been reviewers who has claimed this"

I've seen the odd preview of unfinished early code where _at_the_time_of _writing, the PS3 version played a LITTLE better than the 360 build. But what matters is how the FINAL builds play, bot the early builds.

The two reviews I've seen so far suggests DMC4 is a very good game, but nothing special, so I really don't see this game boosting PS3 sales, especially since it's not a PS3 exclusive. :|

» Games4James

Um no im referring to the finish version that the reviewer said that the PS3 version is cleaner and plays better to 360, and that version has glitches and such.

It doesn't have to be an exclusive to make sales if it plays better on the final build now, for the PS3. Like i said thats what he said and im not sure, but since he played both and is unbiased it could only mean good sales for PS3 and probably boost it.

Oh and i found the site if you think im joking.

http://gamereviewsblog.com/?p+58/devil-may-cry-4-review-xbox-360-and-playstation-3

And this is what he wrote "Devil May Cry 4 is just ment to be played on the PlayStation 3. It just feels%u2026 dunno - more comfortable, more responsive?

Furthermore, it is now clear that the game was initially developed for the PS3 and then ported to the 360. Occasional frame-rate issues are to blame. Loading times are also _a bit_ faster on the PS3."

As you can see if this hold true expect big sales for the PS3 version. Again i don't know but this guys has both systems played both systems and is clearly unbiased. I say this can probably move about 2 million PS3's in like 2 months maybe more.

by Stealth! - 2008-01-23 17:42
» Remember

Put an equal Sign after the + sign since QJ doesn't allow it for some reason.

I disagree this game is very special and kickass and very hard at times, newbies my not be able to beat certain parts of this game especially 360 fans who play the game.

The reviewer also stated this "Devil May Cry is _the_ Next Gen game. If you really want to experience (probably) TRUE HD gaming, this is definitely the game you want to play."

So looks like what you read was wrong. Looks to be very good.

by Games4James - 2008-01-24 11:22
» LOL!

" I say this can probably move about 2 million PS3's in like 2 months maybe more."

Don't be silly, it's not in the same league as games like GT and MGS, and the reviews so far point to a very good game, not a system seller. It's as likely to shift 360s an PS3s (i.e. no more than any other multi-format game).

There are also more impressions on that site, such as;

http://gamereviewsblog.com/?p+64/dmc4-xbox-360-vs-ps3-comparison

Hardly the big difference YOU claim it to be. Where is it WAY better on the PS3? Slightly better load times at the expense of HDD space and some gamers preferring to play the game using the DS (because this is what they're used to for DMC) is FAR from being way better on the PS3.

From the videos I've seen so far (at least from the demos), the cutscene framerate on the PS3 version can often drop to below that of the 360.

http://www.gamersyde.com/news_5827_en.html

I'm sure when we see the reviews from the main websites and magazines for DMC4 on the 360 and PS3, there will be plus and minus points for both, where overall they're about even!

by Stealth! - 2008-01-24 17:10
» Games4James

If you read my post properly Im not sayinf that the PS3 version will be better, i just said if(bold) the reviewer is correct, seeming how he played both and is unbiased, it could sell more systems for PS3, considering the fact he said it plays much better on the PS3 system and feel like it was meant to be on the PS3.

Now i can't say anything whether he's right or wrong, since i haven't played the actual game yet, but DMC franchise has always been a console mover for Sony, dated back September 21, 2001 when DMC1 was released in the states.

But who knows, but i wouldn't be surprise if this does increase sales for the PS3.

As for the comparisons other than slightly better lighting and sharpness, and frame-rate its pretty much identical that i agree with. And the differences aren't that noticeable even though i can see it.

But im just saying DMC4 has been branded as a great game, exciting and very hard at times.

And according to head man who is directing DMC4, who also was apart of DMC1 development, "This is game is going to be better than all three combined", and this is from him. And if he right this game will be killer. A game to be better than all three, even the first must be crazy good.

Thats all im saying. Its not what you might have heard from other sites.
