Analysts: GTA 4 to help PS3 more than Xbox 360

PS3, Xbox 360 - Image 1There's little doubt that more copies of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4(Xbox 360, PS3) will be sold for the Xbox 360 than for the PlayStation 3, but analysts say that there's more to gain for Sony in this picture than there is for Microsoft.

This is so, say the experts, because more PlayStation 3s will be sold than Xbox 360s as a direct result for the launch. While it's true that the Xbox 360 has a larger install base, the PS3 benefits more in the long run because the game will expand its user numbers and pave the way for other triple-A releases like Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet.

"I think PS3 'wins' this battle," says Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. He explained that if GTA 4 sells nine to 12 million copies before the year ends, the PS3 should sell two million more units compared to the Xbox 360's one million.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams agrees. He believes that some old PlayStation 2 fans may just be holding their money in while laying in wait for big releases like GTA 4.

"So many people who owned the PS2 went into PlayStation family because of GTA," he adds. "The release of GTA 4 could expedite their decision to upgrade."

Microsoft, however, is not letting up. It plans to be the "better" GTA 4 platform by putting together a bigger marketing campaign and snaring an exclusive deal that will give it exclusive rights to GTA 4 episodic content for its Xbox Live service.

» who cares?

I understand that this will most likely be the biggest game of the year, but who gives a ***** whether Sony or Microsoft will win out of it? The bottom line is that this game will be amazing and sell great on both systems.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this game will not decide the fate of the console wars like some people here have been saying it will.

» I can't wait for it to be released

MAINLY so that maybe we'll start getting articles about other games. The whole web is saturated with this useless shizn!t. QJ, thank god, has less than most, but still... can't wait til we get thru that week (or two) of dumba$$ comparisons.

well.... GTA has made a great impact on both consoles, a lot of people bought a ps2 just because of GTASA, i think that this comparison/debate is because some people think that both consoles will have a different benefit for the game as to they will be doing something online for xbox, but not for PS3 in GTA.

» This game hardly decides the outcome of the console war

Look at the Wii, it ain't getting this game, yet will it lose the console war? However I know that the Wii isn't really competing in the same way as PS3 and X360 are competing against each other. Wii's target audience is a world's difference compared to PS3 and X360's target audience. Anyways, I think this game will help PS3 more simply because there are a lot of PS2 owners waiting to upgrade. Also, people who want the 360 have already gotten one, so of course not as many ppl would buy a 360 as compared to buying a PS3. There are still a lot of people who are waiting for the PS3's price to drop, whereas the 360 is already as cheap as a Wii (speaking of the Arcade model). What does decide the outcome of the console war has to be which consoles have the better exclusives. Multi-platform games don't decide the outcome. If PS3 has a more impressive exclusive games list, then it wins, et vice versa.
