Madden NFL 08 - Image 1

There's been quite a buzz about Electronic Arts' Madden NFL '08, as the PS3 version runs at 30 FPS while the Xbox 360 enjoys smoother and faster 60 FPS. Heated discussions on the net have surfaced, leaving analysts to wonder if this commotion will actually make an impact. UBS analyst Ben Schachter believes it's going to be bad for Sony, but Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter begs to differ.

Investors and other people rolling in the dough to make big games possible aren't usually fazed with issues that gamers would cry on about, but Schachter is worried that "given Madden's popularity and the volume of this debate, we think this is a more meaningful negative for Sony than investors might realize."

Not only will a good number of gamers be wary about the PS3 being actually more powerful than the 360, but EA's decision to drop Madden's PS3 framerate (because of inexperience with the console, they said) may actually hurt Sony 'til the year ends. "It gives gamers just one more reason not to buy a PS3 this year following the slip of GTA IV. It is a positive for [Microsoft]," Schachter added.

However, Michael Pachter thinks "Analysts are too quick to criticize." He points at EA's lack of experience as the only reason why Madden is slower on Sony's machine, and expects EA to figure things out by next year.

"There are obviously PS3 games that look fantastic. It's not an issue with the PS3," Pachter commented after mentioning Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, and Call of Duty 4. He went on, saying "anyone who has [a PS3] knows it's awesome... I love my PS3 (and love my 360), and can't wait to watch '300' in 1080p."

» Not much difference

Although it sounds bad framerate doesn't make much of a difference. Motorstorm only runs at 30 fps and that games as smooth as a new born's bottom.

» Excuses

EA probably has more experience on the 360 and PS3 then anyone. Maybe if Sony's system was a bit more friendly to program for, they have more then a few decent games. Enjoy your Blue-ray player. If a 360 owner really wanted to watch "300", in 1080P, they could.

» framerate does make a diff!

i beg to differ..

i played madden 08 on my pc at 1920x1200 at 60hz and it was smooth as butter vs playing on my ps3 w/the menu and hike delays, delays in menus, crappy play selection ui (i prefer the pc's play selection screen, like the classic madden-3 across).

just my .02..

peace

» Analysts and apologists

That "Patcher" joker sounds like a lot of the Sony apologists out there. The PS3 has some good looking games, but it is conspicuous that not a single one can be set on a pedestal and labeled as truly visually spectacular. The 360 does have such a game. "Patcher" also seemed either to be implying that only Blu-ray can achieve 1080p, or showcasing a familiar lack of knowledge of the capabilities of both formats - either of which is worthy of ridicule, coming from any prestigious source.

On a related topic (apologists), how many games is it going to take, exactly, before the whole idea of the PS3 possessing superior gaming hardware is finally shot down defacto?

» PS3's Setup Ideal

The PS3 is hard for some programmers to get used to and game companies like EA like to push games on every platform just about every year with the same genres such as Madden for instance. One problem with doing this is that when new technology comes along they are not ready for the challenge in that short amount of time. Think about it. Madden games come out every year on multiple platforms and somewhere someone makes the decision to make them as close to each other as possible with the time they have so they use tools that work to get results that will work to the best that they have for the time frame. Next year there should be no excuse for this. Games are coming that will be to the top of what the 360 has to offer and maybe surpass what Microsoft can do with their current system. Sure Microsoft and companies making games for them have some EXCELLENT titles but I believe that PS3 has more potential in what can be achieved do to the setup of the hardware. Lair for instance a 25gb game and Heavenly Sword is good as well with PS3 coming out with tons of future titles that will be spectacular I think that the 360 will be second best. As an American, I hope Microsoft will come up with a way better system in the future and not rush things,..... for the sake of us all.

» um

I love sony but I do not understand why they haven't sent out some god damn trainers/sony programmers to work with such featured 3rd party game developers like EA. Madden is probably the biggest selling game each year, and its been fuct twice so far on the pS3.

Aside from the horribly long load times, not so amazing graphics and shiet N64 frame rate, i dont really see the appeal of the PS3 happening this holiday season. Expecially with 360 coming out with Halo 3 and Bioshock and the wii coming out with Metroid 3, Mario galaxy and Smash bros. The hell does the PS3 have? Out of the top 3 games coming out this year (warhawk, Heavenly sword, Lair) only one of them seems to be worthly of acclaim.. and no its not Lair or Heavenly sword.

» um, no

"not a single one can be set on a pedestal and labeled as truly visually spectacular. The 360 does have such a game."

The holiday season of PS3 has not come out yet, after that you can come see if there are none that are visually spectacular (e.g. Heavenly Sword, Rachtet and Clank). And which 360 game are you refering too? I don't know of one such game.

» Tools

There was a dev comment posted on here a while ago, stating that the PS3 was better than the 360, i dont think that is in any doubt.

However, Microsoft has released more development tools and libraries to make development easier for companies (Microsoft has always been good to developers, no one can argue against that fact).

Sony should start releasing more tools and libraries to get the PS3 games where they should be.

» Wow

What do they teach kids like slicksim in school. That article said the PS3 wasn't as hard to develop for than its made out to be.

Regardless, I'm tired of these stupid excuses for the PS3. When it first launched it was, "Wait a year, you'll see". Now its been damn near a year and its, "Wait until 08, that's Sony's year." Just like every multi plat game that drops their an excuse. "They need more dev time (even though some of these games have been getting worked on for 2+ years), MS tools are better, you'll see soon".

Who spends $600 for faith? You can get religion for free for that.

» It's 500 dollars dumbass get with the times

Games that look awesome in terms of Graphics on the PS3 are Lair, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore,Unchar ted Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, Little Big Planet, Infamous, and others. Now all these games look gorgeous in terms of graphics. But what do all these games have in common. Oh yeah they are all exclusive to the PS3. Which is why they look much better than anything the 360 has to offer. Hell even Uncharted looks better than Halo 3. So just wait till at least some of these games are out before jumping the gun.

» No Prob

It won't cause a problem, the biggest population of gamers out there won't even know about the bad framerate, especially those who are buying madden, which even on the 360 is barely worth playing. The media should really be focusing more on the RRoD than this, it's EAs fault anyway. I suspect microsoft knows why the media seems to be ignoring the RRoD.

really?...I ponied up $200 just to get the HD-dvd addon, and I can't get 1080P cause apparently you need to have an hdmi port which mine does not beacause microsoft told me I didn't need one when I bought my console.

by 360FTW! - 2007-08-20 06:14
» Well the only one I can think of

would have to be gears of war...that's it...bioshock was not visually amazing to me. But Killzone 2 is really coming along.

» LOL NOOB

The PS3 was available on November 11, 2006 in Japan. Today's date is August 20, 2007. Get your $h!t straight because it has not been a year unless you're sense of time is warped. In that case, you might want to camp out for your XBlowx711 again.
