The definition of epic - Image 1Without a doubt, gamers definitely have more than a handful of upcoming titles to look forward to. When Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV are nearing release, we can only agree with DFC Intelligence when it said 2008 could be the year of epic games with a focus on the number four.

According to DFC's industry briefing report, the group expects hardcore games to be prominent this year. To quote:

Going forward, the challenge faced by the Wii is that it is not that strong when it comes to the more complex epic games. It is likely that 2008 could be the year of the epic game... The key challenge faced by Microsoft and Sony is to avoid the Nintendo 64 syndrome of being locked only into the market of serious gamers.

Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian also released his report, saying he expects console gaming to experience growth in the first half of 2008 due to the release of mentioned high-profile titles from Capcom, Konami Digital, and Rockstar. On the other hand, he foresees June and beyond to be favorable to PC gaming when Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and Starcraft II hit shelves along with Electronic Arts' Spore.

Sebastian sees EA enjoying strong sales with upcoming titles such as a new Burnout, BioWare's long-awaited Dragon Age, and an unconfirmed F1 racing game. Included in the list is a new Fight Night title scheduled for 2009, something that should make fans overjoyed after series developer EA Chicago was axed. Another noteworthy title is Rock Band 2, which appearance on EA's line-up could mean MTV Games and Harmonix' popular rhythm game is likely to be an annual franchise akin to EA's other IPs.
