Analyst theorizes why SCEA is dropping the 80GB PS3 |

Gamers and analysts were recently stunned upon hearing word that Best Buy would soon stop selling 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 SKUs. While many were left scratching their heads in disbelief, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey offered an explanation behind the development."Sony is likely dumping the 80GB version because it has failed to meet internal sales projections," comments Hickey. "A recessionary environment will likely punctuate the 80GB version's relative and absolute retail sales disappointment."
He adds "the recently released 40GB version is getting traction at retail, suggesting backward compatibility takes a backseat to the console's price point for current buyers."
For its part, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) kept its silence, saying "SCEA does not comment on rumor and/or speculation."
Interestingly enough, Gamedaily.Biz pointed out that video game sales trackers NPD Group revealed the 80GB SKU to be the better-selling of the two current PS3 models. This further raises speculations as to why Sony is really pulling the plug on the more dominant version.
Pundits have theorized on a 120GB unit in the works. Others believe that Sony might be dropping backwards compatibility entirely and settling for next-gen focus.

An extra $100 for the ability to play whatever part of the large PS1/PS2 library you wish to play, is not a taxing difference over the $399 40GB PS3.
Stop moaning about prices all the time. Your PS3s are a lot cheaper than here in Europe. Infact, just about everything in America is cheaper than in Europe.

ps: a recession is normal and it changes NOTHING! You won't earn less money or stuff like that, we're not in 1929 boy! Again, a recession changes nothing and people in america ARE cheap (I'm from there too), I mean, why do walmart is the more powerful company you think? lol.
And anyway, you don't need to be cheap to buy the things that cost less for the same, you just have to be smart, lol. If you don'T want ps1/ps2 comptability since you ALREADY have a ps1/ps2, the 40g model is way better for it's price, dah!
ps: Currencies mean nothing. Canadian currency is sometimes moer powerful than US currency, it's just about how much they produce money (print it) compared to the economy and population. Also, the Yen seems week with 1Yen about 0.01 $US, but the Japanese economy is one of the most powerful one on earth, the currrency means nothing.
And finally, don't complain against "ncsleet" comments if it's just to speak of stuff you don't know a thing.
pps: I'm not in finance nor economy so my knowledge is also limitted, but my economy classes makes me know some of the basic stuff that drives economy, so don't panic about recessions....

An old joke by economists:
A recession is when your neighbor loses his job.
A depression is when you lose your job.

And please keep BC. I can't imagine not playing through FF Tactics once every 18 months. It's sick, I know.

0 is around £50-55 (No, we don't use the Euro in the United Kingdom).
The minimum wage is something like £6.40?
Most people earn £50+ per day, so 0+ per day.
And I know for a FACT (I looked at moving to the US + so I did some research into potential careers), Americans do NOT make a substantially LESSER amount of money than anybody I know.
SO, stop whining.
It's 1 day's wages.
Where else are you going to spend your money?
Keep away from fast food for a week, try beans on toast.
You might lose some weight while you're saving that 0 towards your 80GB, full-featured, notthecheapcrap pyversionforpoo rpeople PS3.

I mean, it'd make sense.
People think that part of their money is paying for the bundled game, which is ultimately, terrible.. They're less likely to purchase that bundle.
Especially if they don't know the differences between the 40GB and 80GB, they'd rather spend the extra ONEHUNDREDOLLAR S on a couple of games.

if a recession comes along interest rates go up, forcing people out of their houses, or losing all of their life savings in shares, or small businesses have to close down!
and as someone famous once said :"if america sneezes, the world catches a cold"
as for on topic, i would have thought they are getting ready for the 120gig to come out!
anyway, im looking to put a 250 gig drive into my ps3, and put the 60 gig in my ps3 into an external hard drive case!!

You want BC, you pay extra for it.
I don't see why you think you should be getting extra stuff with BUDGET console versions.
Yes, the 40GB is a BUDGET choice, for people who are too tight to spend the extra little bit of cash on the real deal.
It's like expecting a HTC Touch to be an iPhone.
Or, expecting an OEM built PC to compete with a custom built gaming machine.
Orrr.. Buying a Ford and expecting a Lamborghini.
You get what you pay for, basically.
If you can't afford it, you make do without, and don't whining about the price tag.
I want a Lotus Exige.
I can't afford one.
I'm not going to join a Lotus discussion forum and whine about the pricetag.

I mean, that would be neat, no?

160GB would be excessive, and 160GB harddrives are more expensive than 80GB harddrives, which logic should tell you.
So why on earth would they give you double the storage space for the same price?
WHAT IS WITH YOU CHEAP PEOPLE?
Jesus..
$500 is NOT a lot of money.

it's not about the space.
ps2s have never been the most reliable systems in the world, i wouldn't trust one to stay in working order for longer than a couple of years.
