No doubt that the PS3 is selling hotter than hotcakes right now, and with the way it's going it's possible that there might even be a shortage of the console. According to Stern Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, the sales appear to be more than market expectations for this month, so it's possible that a lot of folks will have trouble finding a PS3 late in September.

According to Bhatia:

Our channel checks show that PS3 hardware sales remained strong in the second week of September following very strong sales in the first week of September. The first week of September saw a 300% lift at top retailers according to Sony. Our checks suggest stronger pent-up demand than expected. We now believe PS3 hardware sales in September have the potential to be up as much as 75% y-o-y versus our most recent upwardly revised expectation of +50% y-o-y. We believe this is stronger than market expectations.

Remember that late in August, retailers reported that their first shipments got sold out even before early September, which was supposed to be the official launch of the PS3 Slim. As for the figures that came later, we know the number 999% all too well by now. Depending on supply, Bhatia notes that sales can even exceed their estimate of +75% year-on-year.

If sales continue its current direction, Sony will have to ship out more units for the coming holidays, where the full blast of the hardware sales wars is expected to erupt. The price cut and the Slim are blowing serious wind on Sony sails, but the same cannot be said about the Xbox 360. "In contrast to the PS3, our checks show that hardware sales of Xbox 360 have shown only a slight lift of around 5% to 10% following its recent price cut," Bhatia said.

Sony doing very well:

RE: FAKE SHORTAGE

Seemed to work for Nintendo, they faked their way to #1!

yeah

looks like its happening already. I was store hopping with my buddy last night looking for midnight releases for marvel ultimate alliance 2 for ps3 in our area and i noticed some stores displayes had fat and slim ps3 empty. I asked out of curiosity and the guy said they'll be getting more wednesday (today) or next week.

I know everyone likes to blame Sony for everything...

but how could it be a FAKE shortage claim by Sony when they aren't even the one's that made the comment? It's this Stern Agee analyst that's saying that if the current sales numbers continue, retailers may run out if Sony doesn't ship more consoles.

Sweet

A shortage would be good and bad at the same time. Good because it means, as the article says, the PS3 is selling like hotcakes and bad because there would be more demand than supply

WTF!?!?!?!?!

1. It was a JOKE. 2. To answer your question. Easy! The same way Nintendo supposedly faked a shortage. By purposely not manufacturing enough units. Yes, the theory is idiotic. That was the purpose. To expose MCS as the idiot she is... for the 8,457th time.

I could not tell that, that was a joke... -_-"

Good Good the prophecy is coming true.

Wait a minute....

With the laws of supply vs. demand, maybe Sony should raise the price back up. Now that Xbox has dropped it's profit, it's the perfect chance for Sony to grab some bonus cash. Just drop the price long enough for the teeners to rant that they want one, then raise it back up before the holidays. Genius!! I'd love to see it.

999% increase in sales is not fake

nor did Sony in their wildest dreams hope to achieve that.......every1 knows how great the PS3 is.....it was inevitable, sooner or later it was gonna happen but never in my most ridiculous assumptions did i guess it would increase by 999%.....................therefore this is not fake as the whole world is in on it.............unless you want to say all those people are fake people who bought all thoes PS3 Slims

by DCX6000 - 2009-09-16 02:18:25
It Might Not Be Fake

I wanted to but the PS3 Slim even though I already have the 60 gig model :) I went to two Gamestops, a Wal-Mart and a Best Buy, but they were sold out! But this probably could be a trick to up the sales further. Who knows, but a 999% increase is a great achievement. I bet Xbox 360 fan-boys must be hating hard on us PS3 users! I hope Xbox doesn't try to rip off the PS3 with a Xbox360 Slim. I'd be mad. Also with the PSP Go arriving soon. Sony will put Microsoft and Nintendo under water and call it a day!

haha

economics 101 right there :P, but doubt the price wud b increased lol

by hypercoyote360 - 2009-09-16 11:17:12
No way!

A shortage of a sony system? That's absolutely unheard of! Honestly, I would love to have one of these but Sony retardly decided to remove backwards compatability. So I guess I'll be sticking with my PS3 60GB......

by ISOHaven - 2009-09-16 11:40:59
WTF!?!?!?!?!

Um... did you miss a post there high speed? However, everything you just said about the PS3 owners can also be said about all the Nintendo owners. Therefore, there is no such thing as a fake shortage in either case. Especially when Nintendo was churning out WAY MORE consoles then both Sony and Microsoft. I like how, once I joked about Sony, only then did people start to open their eyes and conclude how ridiculous a fake console shortage is.... COMEDY!!!

The 360 owners are hating the ps3 bad

Why do you think there are so many alledged firmware problems just now? :p
