Analyst Mike Hickey: Grand Theft Auto 4 may ship 5.8 million in first week - Image 1Truth be told, the things are definitely heating up for Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

We're not talking about the masturbation and explicit sexual issues that game has. We're referring to the probable sales within the game's first week.

According to Janco Partners' analyst Mike Hickey, this game which is slated to be unleashed on April 29, 2008 will be able to sell about 5.8 million units in its week one. In fact, in a note to Gamestop investors, he said:

We expect [Gamestop] will benefit from the release of GTA IV in their fiscal Q2 08 period, which could ship 5.8 million units in the first week or US$ 360 million in retail sales and potentially US$ 110 million for the company.

Furthermore, Hickey added that the game to ship in as much as nine million units during Rockstar's parent company Take-Two's fiscal year. Well, how about that? It seems that eager fans of this game franchise won't have problems getting a copy of the game.

Well, this is just an estimate, we'll bring you news on how the game will do when it's released.

With games like this, Take Two doesn't need EA.

But this is also why EA is on such a headstrong - frantic grab to get T2 and specifically Rockstar under it's name. What other game around has the potential to make 1/2 a billion dollars in one fiscal year?

EA is making a mad attempt to take T2 as it's own. First they made an offer that was refused and then went straight to the shareholders to undercut T2 and were still refused. Last I heard they have T2 another week to "decide" it's fate. It's bluntly obvious that they want that massive cash cow that is GTAIV working for them.
