The phenomenal success of Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) was enough to award it two Guinness Awards, and if that weren't enough, the Wall Street Journal also reported that game sales actually aided the UK's economy for the month of April.

As successful as it is though, it seems it wasn't enough to help either Sony or Microsoft. At least, this is according to analyst Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets. He notes that there is a significant rise in software sales, but not hardware sales:

Solid videogame software sales continued in May, and we expect roughly 30 percent growth in console and handheld software for the month. We do not believe the recent release of GTA IV has generated meaningful incremental demand for the Xbox 360 or PS3 platforms.

His statement echoes the sentiments expressed by the simExchange last month. These opinions strike as a bit off though, as Microsoft claimed last month that 40% of those who got the game bought an Xbox 360 as well.

The only interpretation to accommodate both sentiments is that those who were intending to buy an Xbox 360 incidentally bought the game as well, instead of the game influencing consumers to buy a console.

Buy: [Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3)
Buy: [Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360)]

When are people going to stop giving a ***** what ANALysts say? Especially Michael Pachter. That guy should die in a fire already.

BS> I wouldn't have gotten a 360 back in January if it wasn't for the fact this title was impending.

» Your a dumbass

The fact is they get paid to tell people the market and statistics. Sure they may not be correct all the time, but they're like Weather people on the news channel. They are supposed to give news to people and get paid to tell what they foresee in the market. You can't be right all the time, but still they're just doing there jobs.

» Expected.

I kind of figured GTA4 wouldn't help console sales (especially since they sacrificed fun for realism). I guess it's a good thing Saints Row 2 will be coming out soon since that will now feel more like a GTA game than GTA4 itself.

» Statistics

Wow, statistics get manipulated enough without blogs completely butchering them like in this post. Do they even teach basic mathematics in school any more?

40% of new Xbox 360 owners also bought GTAIV along with their purchase.

If you really thought that 40% of all GTAIV purchasers also bought an Xbox 360 with their game, then you have severe issues that extend into the realms of craziness.

by Daz_Genetic - 2008-06-09 13:55
» Quoted just incase it gets changed

Sorry, I should quote the original line, because my comment is going to look stupid if the blog gets edited.

"Microsoft claimed last month that 40% of those who got the game bought an Xbox 360 as well."

If you read the linked article, it is very clear that is not what Microsoft claimed. If you can misinterpret something that badly, you really should not be posting your opinion on a blog. Stick to reporting the news and not adding your own thoughts to the end of your summary.

» well,

pachter is wrong too often, he is actually bad at what he does if everything that the media covers him saying is everything he does.

and binary, i think you need a new girlfriend lol.

» basic math

sure 40% of new owners got GTA4, but if the sales didnt increase compared to last month it didnt hel sales, it just means 40% of people who bought 360's bought gta4, doesnt mean gta4 boosted sales. looks like quoting the blog didnt make stop you from looking like an idiot. but you can thank GW2 for that

by Daz_Genetic - 2008-06-09 16:43
» Go back to school.

You are the one who looks like an idiot.. If you read the post, you can see that he didn't claim that 40% of new Xbox owners bought GTAIV.. You will see that he claimed that 40% of all GTAIV purchasers bought an Xbox 360..

Those are two completely different things.. If you don't agree with that, then I can't even lower myself to argue with you.

" The fact is they get paid to tell people the market and statistics. Sure they may not be correct all the time, but they're like Weather people on the news channel. Just because someone gets paid for doing something doesn't mean they do it as WELL as their contemporaries. You calling the OP a "dumbass" for Patcher's oft wrong analyses is like calling a sports fan a "dumbass" for saying a coach is doing a bad job despite having about 10 years of losing seasons in a row. You don't have to be good at a job to recognize that someone is doing it BADLY.

"If you read the linked article, it is very clear that is not what Microsoft claimed. If you can misinterpret something that badly, you really should not be posting your opinion on a blog. Stick to reporting the news and not adding your own thoughts to the end of your summary."

did you even read the linked article? the 40% attach rate quote DID come from Microsoft. it was a claim made by Major Nelson. Major Nelson is one of Microsoft's many official spokespersons. he's the director of programming for XBL. thus, anything he says, is technically from some internal data from Microsoft.

and here you are talking about misinterpreting something badly. sigh. some people...

by Daz_Genetic - 2008-06-10 04:27
» Dimwits...

I'm not talking about the linked article.. The article is accurate.. I'm talking about the author of this article's interpretation of that article.

Microsoft claimed that 40% of people buying new Xboxs also bought GTAIV..

They did not claim that 40% of people buying GTAIV also bought an Xbox 360.

Those are two completely different things..

If only 100 people bought Xboxs, Microsoft's claim would still be true as long as 40 of those people also bought GTAIV.. According to Isaac C's interpretation, he believes that Microsoft is saying that of the millions of people that bought GTAIV, that 40% of those people also bought Xbox 360's which is both untrue, and just downright crazy.

This is not about Microsoft's claim, this is about Isaac C's lack of common sense. Read the last two paragraphs of this post and (assuming you aren't retarded) you will realize that I did not make an error. Isaac did.

"Microsoft claimed last month that 40% of those who got the game bought an Xbox 360 as well."

Explain what the above quote from the post means. I just want to test your IQ. Just the sentence, not the article it links to.. Just take that sentence on its own and tell me what you think it means.

by NeilR - 2008-06-10 09:09
» He's right

Isaac did indeed seem to get the meaning of Ryan's article all backwards (article which quotes a podcast detailing week 1 numbers in the US).

People make mistakes. Now we can all move on.

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-06-11 07:17
» .

Everyone knew GTA4 was coming for years, so why would people buy consoles the same month the game is released? If they had money, they probably got their consoles months ahead (especially with the delay.)

by WiiCool - 2008-06-13 04:50
» No,

Not exactly, use your common sense.

No one really has that much money these days...(you can thank Bush for that)... so why would someone shell out $300-400 on a videogame system when they're paying an outrageous $4.00+ for gas?
