An Official Look at the PS3's Interface

The last two video coverages we've had of the PS3's XMB user interface system were just appetizers. Vidcaps of demonstrations at E3 (and a better-angle capture of the demo) made by fans or reviewers and posted onto the net. It's a good taste of what's to come when we power up our PS3's come D-day, but like any good appetizer it leaves you wanting more. This time, thanks to Jeremy Bodgan, we have the chance for a closer look at the next-gen console's XMB. And this time it's "official," not a guerillacam video, but direct-feed from the reviewers, and sanctioned by Sony.

Unlike our previous guerillacam coverage of the PS3 XMB, this one doesn't display all the features found in the E3 demo reels - no web browser, no media viewer/player, only user profile, settings, game, and friends network. But that's probably because the feed's coming from a devkit: the running commentary did mention that the demo's running on a "debug system," and the XMB here's the same as those we saw in the devkit infomercial. Unlike the guerillacams and the infomercial, however, the reviewers here explore the audio/video settings available - yes, this console will pump out 1080p if you choose to do so (and your TV and connection to the PS3 can take it).

While the A/V settings were the meat of this review, the commentary also skims through a few of the other options (like date/time settings, option to change network/internet settings), and gives a demo of the XMB being brought up in the middle of a game. And while this XMB's bland, the reviewers confirm that Sony's planning to throw in customization options for the XMB, like changing the wallpaper for the main XMB screen.

This and the previous videos we've got should give us a pretty good idea of what to expect when the PS3's output signal finally grace our TV sets.

» E3 2006 PS3 XMB

Sony might as well use the set up they had at E3 2006.

by tony - 2006-08-19 15:11
» they can do better than that

boring, disapointing. Is this a bad joke?

by tom - 2006-08-19 15:17
» wow

there is no way that you can say thats better than the 360's interface. wow. so bad.

by spicyhamster - 2006-08-19 15:37
» dont fret

its just the bare-bones XMB. its only a dev-kit, so they dont need to have the music/video/internet/etc menus. so dont worry. it'll be cool once you see YOUR ps3 which will have all those consumer-oriented menus/submenus that developers/IGN dont necessarily need.

by frikkin fugly - 2006-08-19 15:37
» aha

i'm sorry to say this, but that is *****ing rediculous and just looks like a waste of time....hha how bout i push that middle button right through that *****ing controller and see how cheap that is..call me a fanboy, but im not, i have two ps2 consoles and 2 psps+ sony tv+vaio all that stuff...but i think i'll just stick to my 360 this new generation...screw the specs. it's all about the CONSOLE games...

WAIT IT DOESNT MATTER. IT HAS BLU-RAY, THE INTERFACE DOESNT MATTER. BLU-RAY!!!! OMFG

It was in debug mode, not all of the features were showing. No one should even dare compare the PS3 and xbox360 until they have used both consoles

by Fin - 2006-08-19 15:58
» Guys

If you listen, the guy doing the review keeps saying "This is machine is running on debug" and keeps saying "i don't want to mess with that yet, this is in debug". This is a dev kit and on debug mode. Not everything is there. Theres a difference between a regular consumer PS3 interface and a Dev Kit meant for devs.

» Dont try to convince the fanboys they have no sense: Say it with be DEVKIT!

These guys are seriously injured in the head. They know is a devkit and are just looking for ammo to talk down the PS3. What's ridiculous are the comments made.

These is to give you a glimpse at what will be possible later. We all know the user interface on the retail version will be much nicer.

» ok..

"push the playstation button in the middle"

thats what brings up the in game guide from like the dashboard......soesnt that sound like the Xbox logo button in the middle of the 360 CONTROLLER? jesus christ plz get your own ideas sony.

by pillferd - 2006-08-19 18:29
» it's the same as the xbox 360 menu

it's the same thing, scroll horizontal for main categories an vertiacal for submenus any anyone can see that . i have a 360, and while playing some games online it hangs before bringing up the guide. i have to give it to sony on this one. the way it overlayes the games makes more sense and if it goes between the games and the xbm faster than the 360 thats a plus.

by Gamez - 2006-08-19 20:29
» Hmmm

It looks interesting, nothing spectacular, but spectacular is not what we should be looking for in a user interface, functionality and ease of use is what's important, and those two 'ingredients' appear to be present in that demonstration.

I know some are excusing what they see on the basis that's it's on a devkit, but I wouldn't expect a night and day difference between this demonstration and what we'll see in the final product, keeping in mind that it can be customised by the gamer, therefore altered to each gamer's personal taste.

That said, I expect there are still a few little touches to be added. For example, I noticed when he called up the menu during a game (Untold legends), the game was paused and the menu was simply overlayed over the top, however depending on when you pause the game, the menu will surely be difficult to see at times. I seem to recall a few previous demonstrations where the game image was blurred as a menu appeared, making it stand out better. Hopefully the final interface will do the same.

So, although my first impressions is a menu system which is perhaps not as striking as that seen on the 360, I do look forward to seeing the final version of the interface, and especially the customisation options available to gamers. :)

» for the stupid people saying sony copy...

putting a button that shows up a menu... it's that hard to understand it's not copy but EVIDENCE!?

so I suppose xbox copied the playstation 2 controller completly then, because they just switch the d-pad and the analog for the exactly same controller... guys who talk about company "copying" ideas are damn stupid, I mean, if you dislike the feature then say it's stupîd, but if the feature is cool, just SHUT THE ***** UP and enjoy like every smart people do...

ps: #15 and #16 are stupid, they are surely M$ fanboys who want some other M$ fanboy friends... please, just understand that great features is NOT something to bash. It's like if we'd say all the mp3 players are stealer because they made something like the 1st mp3 player... it's non-sense, so now I won't be able to buy any other computer then aples or mac because they started it? ( I suppose ) it's plain stupid. You should be ashamed of yourself!!!!! I have no respect for your kind.

Looks stunningly beautiful... So simple and damn classy...

I hate my 360's interface, it's so childish and... animated... Where's the class?

» XMB is the best interface

It's simple, it looks great - what more could you need?

BTW PSP hade Home Button before XBox 360, M$ are thieves .

» #18 you dumb dumb

i am a sony fan! well a fan games in general...

sorry you fail to realize that. i said they are the same conceptualy. i did not say "copy", and the only discredit i said was that the 360 guide hangs on some games while playing online, if the PS3's XBM works faster thats a plus. i rather like the minimalist approch taken by sony, this could increase functionality.i guess you did not see that

if anything microsoft copyed sony so i said it, digial sound output, dual sticks, the controllers bumpers aka L1,L2 built in sensor for remotes. i give a ratsa$$ about "copying" if something becomes a standard thats just what it is so every system is going to have it. did anyone see the wii's standard controller not the wiimote, it looks like a PS controller and the snes had a love child.

PS: i think a vey cool idea would be taking a full res 1080p snap shot of the games so when its posted for previews, or review it does not look small and crapy kinda like you can what do in metal gear with the camera. it could also be used a background picture.

Take that 360 interface. The 360 interface is so ugly. It's all green and ugly. Green is ugly. Compare to the blue interface of the PS3. Blue = Cool. Green = Ugly. PS3 interface = Stylish. 360 interface = Green = Ugly. Enough said.

the thing i will always love about the ps3 (and psp for that matter), is the constant updates (mind you, my psp is 1.5 lol). there are always new features being added to the system making it more versatile and always being upto date. with these kinds of updates, the ps3 will always have new things, and will be a lot of fun.

having the ability to add completely new features/programs/abilities with a simple update will make the ps3 a beast, and the possibilities would be endless.

by Annony - 2006-08-20 05:50
» Simply put

A simple interface for simple people on a not-so-simple piece of hardware.

Besides, a light interface frees up system resources that would otherwise be dedicated to menus instead of GAMING.

by xsouthpole - 2006-08-20 06:42
» Microsoft is not copying.

Im a fanboy of both sony for its psp and microsoft for its 360. And for those saying that microsoft is copying sony. Example, number 18's untrue comment. The xbox controller copied the ps2 controller. This may be true to a glimse of the xbox controller. If you accually take the time to think about it instead of pointing fingers. You would realize this is not true. Look at the comparisons.

PS2 Xbox S Controller

4 face buttons(x,o,/\,square) 6 face buttons(a,b,x,y ,B,W)

4 shoulder buttons 2 shoulder TRIGGERS

select, start under logo BACK,start located on left side

dpad above left thumbstick dpad below left thumbstick

So as you can see. PS2 controller and Xbox controller S are very different when looked at more closely. Their shape is'nt quite the same either. The only thing alike about these two controllers are the standard production color and right thumbstick placement. I can honestly admit that the xbox 360 controller does look closer two the ps2 controller. However, standard production color, left thumbstick placement, dpad placement, xbox guide button, triggers on the shoulder(not buttons), face button color and symbols being different, and the shape difference, still set these two controllers far apart.

Don't call me an xbox fanboy sticking up for xbox, call me a guy doing an analysis to conclude that the xbox controller s and xbox 360 controller are not similar enough to conclude the fact that microsoft copied anyone.

who cares?

do you buy a game console because of the flashy menu?

sorry i didn't spend 400$ on the 360 for the menu...and i won't spend 600$ for the ps3 for the menu...

by Hidden - 2006-08-20 10:25
» Quit the copying crap...

I dont know if you realise how retarded you sound when you say that one company copies the other. It is called capitalistic socity, we thrive off one person doing something great and other expanding upon it making it fresh and better than before. For instance the idea of a controller was orginated from atari or the original nintendo and expanded and built upon until it became what it is today. Every once in a while someone comes up with a totally new concept, i.e. wii controler, but that to will be built upon by someone else and made better and more usable in the future.

By saying that someone copied someone is absolutly rediculous unless it is exactly the same down to the the button placement. Since this is copy right infingment, haha yeah we have laws to prevent one company for "copying" another...novel idea right, no company does this. Read a book and learn about the products before you accuse randomly.

I still do not see how linux is going to be integrated into this system...you would think it would be availible to devs since it would be a helpful tool dont you think. Thats something to be pissed about, no Linux. Nothing to not buy ps3 over, just makes Ken Kuragi sound idiotic...

I recently found out this website which has fun and informative information about PS3, X360, and PC titles. It also has things like, what's the best top 5 games for each platform (PS3, X360, and PC)

man you people need to realize that companies get their ideas from others and then sort of changethem to make it theirs. It's been happening for *****ing years. Plus i really don't care about the whole interface thing sure the ps3 is easy like the psp but it's just an interface so stop arguing you stupid *****got mother *****ers. All everyone wants to do is start a war between sony and microsoft. How can you *****ers judge when the mother *****ing system hasn't even come out. Anyways none of the 360 or ps3 graphics can compae to pc if you have a good graphics card. I'm gonna get a ps3 not because i like sony but because they're starting to come up with new gameplay ideas. I haven't really seen any new gameplay ideas from microsoft except graphics and new things on xbox live. But every other game out now hasn't really shown what the 360 can do it jus howing what we saw on the lst system but with better graphics. Sure ghost recon had kick ass graphics but the gameplay could hve been slightly better. I hope that gears of war does show what the 360 is capable of doing because i haven't seen *****.
