Still in the dark about the contents of the PS3 box? Yeah, we know you guys are curious; we asked the cat. Lucky for us, GameFront was able to get their hands on an interesting bit of information. Apparently, brochures from Sony found their way to some Japanese retailers. The brochure includes specs of the PS3 box.

What's inside?
  • PS3 hardware
  • 1 x controller
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x Stereo AV cable (Stereo AV, Component, D-terminal, multi-terminal), HDMI cable available separately
  • 1 x LAN cable
  • 1 x Power cable
We're still chucking this up the rumor mill, until further notice. But while there's no official statement from the big guys, we're just glad to see that USB cable there. Why? It seems like Sony really wants you to connect your PSP to the PS3. Remember the news on the PS3-PSP link up? Yeah, well, it looks they're trying to make sure that you'd be able to plug your handheld onto the unit by providing a cable.

» Why the usb cable?

Umm yes maybe for the psp but doesn't the controller have a usb port? It would make sense why it was in there....

I agree with #2. The USB cable is IMHO primarily for charging up the controller.

I'm curious about the AV cable tho... Component is mentioned, but wouldn't composite make more sense as the generic give-away cable? Or does it have both composite and component in addition to the sterio audio?

» LAN cable

thats one plus i guess

by hmm - 2006-10-07 15:23

you said its just amazing that it took so long for someone to actually get why the USB cable is their. The USB cable could be use for the psp since its the same input for both the psp and controller but the main reason is to simply rechardge your ps3 controller. I'm sure that you can plug in to the psp to transfer music. pictures, and etc but this might be use by people who buy the $499.99 model since it has no wi-fi connectivity and might require a cable to connect to each other.

» some hardcore ps3 fans, huh

you noobs. of course the USB cable can be used for the PSP, but it's undoubtedly in the box to charge the controller...

» Hmm

I might be confused, but it comes with component cables? I remember Kutaragi saying he wasnt sure if he wants to put those in there. Wat about regular TV sets? Wheres the composite cables at?

1 x Stereo AV cable (Stereo AV, Component, D-terminal, multi-terminal), HDMI cable available separately

Read Carefully, "HDMI cable available separately" ther not putting the hd cable in there putting the "1 x Stereo AV cable" normal tv sets cable in.

A Stereo A/V Cable? That's like the worst connection type possible! Why not give us an S-Video Cable or even better an RGB Scart Cable, Or heck, to make it actually HD out of the Box a Component cable??

I wish the PS3 came with 2 controllers instead of one

by SOMEBODY - 2006-10-08 02:26
» why is there a usb cable?

Q : why is there a usb cable?

A : the usb cable is there to charge the ps3 wirless controller

think how eles would u charge the controller

LIKE DAAA ITS FOR CHARGING THE PS3 WIRELESS CONTROLLER. The psp will connect wirelessly to the ps3 but to improve transfer speeds between the psp and ps3 yes you could use the usb cable.

Yes. )))

Thank you, but I connect to the net through USB "ADSL modem" from Speedtouch http://www.speedtouch.com/prod330.htm (I just connect my phone line to the modem and im in) will this LAN cable be of any use? And most importantly, is it possible for me to connect to the PS3?...

1 x Stereo AV cable (Stereo AV, Component, D-terminal, multi-terminal), HDMI cable available separately

OK this is simple if you can read. Stereo AV is for normal standard definition television sets. This consists of red and white rca cables for stereo audio and a composite video plug which is yellow. You might recognize these from your PS2 if you have one. Now the Component part is for the HDTV users who don't have HDMI or will not be getting the cable. This a red, green, and blue plug which if you have a HDTV will plug in where it says Component. The D-terminal is describing the end of the cable that plugs into the PS3 unit and the multi-terminal is all the stuff I mentioned above on the other end.

Its the same cable that comes with the premium 360 (not sure about core) except the end that plugs into the console itself. So yes, Sony is including the necessary cables for standard and High Definition TV users. The HDMI is sort of a bonus option so if you don't have a HDTV with it don't worry use the component and your good to go. I hope this helps some of you.

by Sony Fanmail - 2006-10-08 13:51
» Almost correct #24

The D-terminal does not describe the the end of the cable that plugs into the PS3. D-terminal plugs are used in Japan and look similar to a DVI plug on one end plus red and white composite for audio, while the other end would have component outs(red, green, blue). Sony PS brand D-terminal plugs have the multi out plug instead of component outs on one side. The PS3 does not have the D-terminal out so that would be for audio or video equipment. I know this because I use them for my PS2 and Xbox to hook up to a Japanese component/ audio switch and I use to live in Japan. Notice that this info is from Japan.

» r sony complete idiots???

sony are such tossers right now, first they say that the next-generation starts when they say so and now they dont include hdmi cable in package < if this is the real pack> and i dont give a flyinf fart in a frozen fridge if its only 7 bucks extras if they wanna improve their reputation they better pull their colective fingers out and wake up a bit

by Sony Style - 2006-10-08 23:49
» @28 & Sony

I agree w you 28. After all this hub-bub about HDMI compatibility etc, they should provide an HDMI cable with it. Otherwise its not really "HDMI capable out of the box"

I know the cable is cheap, but thats one more thing I have to buy, and they range from $7-$100, so Sony is not ensuring us with a standardized quality. I would have even paid extra, just give us it all at once.

Will Sony have a PS3 branded hdmi cable for sale at launch? How much....? Remember the component cables we got for xbox and ps2, not cheap at all. And for ps2 I pretty much got component for GT4... some of the other games are progressive and i'm sure theres more HD ps2 games, i just dont have them.

Also nice job to the top posters who saw the usb for the controller.... I read it and saw usb is to connect psp, and I kinda went waaaaaaaaa?, but didn't put one and one together until I read your posts. Many props.

» To all

there are 4 usb ports on the damn system. i think 1 can be left out to support the link-up to the PSP system. Get a grip.

and the other thing, Didn't sony mention a while ago that they WERE NOT going to ship the HDMI cables with the system, citing system costs or something?
