HDMIEarlier this month, we reported that High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) has been upgraded to 1.3. HDMI is the first and only consumer electronics industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. While this is very good news, it was also reported that this new version would not feature in the Playstation3 as they had already adopted the previous version of 1.2.

Today, HDMI released a press statement and Ken Kutaragi, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment went on statement as saying 'PLAYSTATION®3 will be the most advanced computer platform for enjoying a wide range of entertainment content, including the latest games and HD movies, in the home. By introducing the next-generation HDMI 1.3 technology, with its high speed and deep color capabilities, PS3 will push the boundaries of audiovisual quality to the next level of more natural and smoother expression on the latest large flat panel displays'

HDMI 1.3 will feature:
  • Higher speed: Increase in bandwidth from 165MHz (in previous version) to 340MHz
  • Deep colour: Support of 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit color depths (from 24-bit in previous version)
  • Broader color space: Removal of virtually all limits on color selection
  • New mini connector: For greater support of small portable devices
  • Lip Sync: Automatic audio/video syncing capability
  • New lossless audio formats: Support for new formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio

so now hd is 'true' hd... or is there a 1.4 on the horizon, meaning this 1.3 isn't even 'true' hd. ffs make a goddamn standard you bastards! that's right, if they keep redefining what's great i'm going to get angry, and you won't like me when i'm angry!!!!

if you can't cope with changes, you'll have a hard time living...

and just with this, lots of geeks will buy the PS3 just to have the ultimate Media Center:D

I'd like to know more about the mini HDMI plug. It'd be tight if it were something that could be incorporated into the psp2 or like a next gen video ipod and then you could just plug a little HDMI cord into it and watch your videos and games on the bigscreen in HD.

Sounds like how gamecube did with gameboy and how PS3 and psp can interact and maybe even play psp games on the tv throw the ps3... or maybe the psp will come out with a little hook up to hook up to a tv, lol.

# so you can say hdmi 1.2 and 1.3 are both standard?comedy 2006-06-23 01:01
you know one is better than the other right? so which is it? i want to know. i'm happy to live with change, but when it comes to something like tv change has to happen rarely and in large steps.

# This isn't such a change...Planet 2006-06-23 01:23
...that it renders anything useless. It is merely an upgrade in features. If your TV can't handle the extended standard, no problem, it will run just fine. Calling it a "tv change" is a vast overstatement.

If you have a TV than can handle 1080p and good speakers. You are going to be very hard pushed to see or hear any difference

Origianally made it for 1.2, than 1.3 will be apart of it. In other words, it will be backwards compatible hardware/software with 1.2 HDMI.
