Adding a price tag to Folding@Home

IGN has a feature that attempts to estimate the monetary cost of running Folding@Home on Sony's PlayStation 3 for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

They estimate (and it's a very rough estimate) that given the 200W power consumption of the PS3 that the Stanford University's Folding@Home FAQ states, and the Electricity Rate Comparison chart found at the Official Nebraska Government Website, they managed to get these figures:

So that's State, then cost in cents per Kilowatt Hour, and then the cost of running Folkding@Home for a whole month straight. As costly as this may seem to some, think of this as a nice way of distributing the cost of Cancer research. The expenditure is definitely worth the cause. Of course, we now wonder about all those environmentalists and their concerns over the PS3's resource consumption and how it contributes to global warming.

yah i agree, its good to know so people have a heads up, its also good to know that the PS3 can run 24/7 as long as its not enclosed and has "breathing room." No one has to leave it on 24/7 and i doubt many people do, they will if they want to and wont if they dont, but your right, its good just to complete a workunit every now and then

What a waste of money. Why would I leave my PlayStation 3 idle for an extent period of time? For what? Curing cancer? Seems to me this is pure bull crap. I bought the PlayStation 3 for HD gaming and not to cure cancer. I can careless if your mama dies of breast cancer or someone you know dies of lung cancer.

Folding@home is pointless. It is pathetic.

Unfortunately, for me I'd pay triple for California. That's because due to the high energy use at my house, I end up paying $0.32/kwh. So that's close to $45/month.

What Sony should have implemented is similar to the folding client on pc's and have folding on all the time using up unused cell power. They should have this option so when you have music playing/movies playing/games playing you can still be folding in the background whos with me??

The Ps3 should be more "multitaskable" hell I want to listen to music whilst browsing the XMB!!!

are you stupid? First off, playing your xbox 360 still uses power, and most of the ass holes on the internet probably leave their xboxs on 24/7 anyways. At least the ps3 is doing something useful when you aren't playing it. Also, I have a few light bulbs on around my house 24/7. I'll turn them off. Now the PS3 isn't changing a damn thing. 200 watts is NOTHING, your water heater is probably using a few thousand. Why don't you buy an energy star appliance, then you won't have to worry about a few hundred watts. This is one of the best developments in the race to cure cancers, and other genetic diseases. Let it run, 24/7, and do something good for once. You don't have to worry about turning it off, because it won't overheat or die. And you can still play all the games / movies you want, just remember to switch to folding when you are done!!!

That's how I do it. I already have a ridiculous power bill but I do it anyways. I Didn't go to medical school and I don't have millions of dollars to donate to cancer research so this is a great way to contribute. Just don't run your air conditioning so low for the couple of hours that you do the folding and you'll be allright.

Yep,sorry to annonce that you significally augment your chace of having cancer if your angry.So all you people that are pissed off are the ones who gonna get it. But i do admit folding cost nothing to find science breaktrough that would not only cure disease but lead to a science breaktrough. this could be use to simulate real organ and nervous system on pc.!imagine!
