Activision wants compensation for release of Rock Band patch

Rock Band by Harmonix - Image 1Activision has revealed the reason why the company objected against the release of the guitar controller compatibility patch Harmonix wanted to release. The fix would have allowed Activision's Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC) guitar peripherals for the Sony PlayStation 3 to work in Harmonix and MTV Games' Rock Band (PS3, Xbox 360).

"We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology,"  Activision's spokesperson Maryanne Lataif told The Boston Globe. Guitar Hero 3's owners continue to claim that Harmonix refuses to reach an agreement. This agreement, however, apparently involves money.

According to Harmonix spokeswoman Spencer Saltonstall, "We are really and truly not looking at this from the financial standpoint. We are looking at this from the consumer standpoint." The company already sent a patch to Sony to allow competing guitars to work in Rock Band, but Activision reportedly prevented its release.

This isnt about a patch here. this goes deeper. This is a micro war between Activision and Harmonix. Guitar Hero 3 and Rock band are compeating, If a patch is released to allow Gh 3's more popular guitar controller to work on rock band how will people get this controller? "thats right- they will go buy guitar hero 3" in essence if everyone that had rockband wanted to use Gh's guitar they would buy guitar hero 3 also, assuring along side gh 3 already installed user base that Gh3 would be the dominant sales figure. in effect if Harmonix allows this patch they are throwing in the towel and admiting Guitar hero 3 is the superior product. And thats just what activision wants.

Good for harmonix I say. forget the patch. It sounds good for the public. But its bad news for marketing and harmonix.

Dont give in harmonix! You have our support.

So why was integration with the 360 acceptable but they want money for the PS3 version?

You're misinformed. Harmonix *created* the patch, not activision. Activision is wanting compensation from Harmonix to allow the GH3 controller to work on RB. Not the other way around. So in essence Activision is being greedy and screwing it's PS3 user base over. The reason why Harmonix had to create a patch for the PS3 version and not the 360 is because there had already been other versions of GH on the xbox to encode into their game. While there hadn't been a GH on the PS3 until weeks before rock bands release. Once GH was released Harmonix was able to add the controller to RB. What is sad is the fact that Activision has been able to prevent the patch, when the patch is Harmonix's property, and reverse engineering is allowed by law.
