Activision prevents release of PS3 Rock Band guitar compatibililty patch |
Ó
Those who want to do mad riffs in Harmonix and MTV Games' Rock Band (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360) using third-party guitar controllers will have to wait, because Activision (publisher of Guitar Hero 3) objects against a patch Harmonix created to make other guitars compatible with the game.As promised earlier this month, a patch for the PS3 version has been created to allow "guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision's Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band."
The patch was expected to go online last December 4 as Sony already obtained and approved it, but Activision wasn't fond of seeing its release. "We have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection," the forum post stated.
Harmonix expressed its desire to let consumers choose which guitar controllers to use in both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, and hopes Activision adopts Harmonix' "when consumers have choice, everyone wins" mantra. With that said, Rock Band's creators are hoping Guitar Hero 3 will allow the use of competing guitars as well.

I can't see in any way how this would hurt Activision. It merely shows that their product is superior and will only lead to them selling more guitars. Bad show Activision, bad show.
If this is true thats one less sale that Activision will be making from me. In the UK GH3 came out a few weeks back and rock bands not due here till feb 08. I'd been hoping to get GH3 at xmas to tide me over till I can get rockband next year. But I'd been holding off from buying it due to the compatibility problems
.Ive already got a GH2 guitar i can't use on the PS3 because even with an adapter all the button mappings get screwed up.
Idoits, how can we get them to see sence?
Rockband proved in the reviews its a better game, now harmonix/mtv proove there the better publisher.
Maybe they are afraid that people would cheat on the game if they allow other such peripherals.
I guess Activision will join Valve and EA of the PS3 fanboy hate list.

Activision violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by doing this.
that kind of sucks that I can't use my GH3 controller. but i'll just buy a third party controller when it comes out to use as the bass guitar
