Activision has revealed that they are planning to release two map packs as DLC for Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC), which has yet to be launched on November 10. Is anyone surprised by this? I didn't think so. Here's what Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith had to say regarding the game's DLC:

In terms of online content, we plan to launch two separate map packs for this title. Map packs help extend the shelf life of the franchise, as evidenced by the strong catalogue sales and premium pricing that we maintained a year-and-a-half after launch. Life to date, weÂ’ve had strong success with map packs on this franchise, selling more than 8 million units for both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Griffith also said that Modern Warfare 2 has already amassed the largest pre-orders in Activision history, calling the game the "must-have title of the year"

» There will be 5 map packs.

One or two might be maps from Modern Warfare 1.

//speculation

» wow

adding a modern warfare 1 map would be the STUPIDEST IDEA EVER! who the hell wants to buy a map that they already played on the previous game that just came out last year? i could see if its been awhile...

This is BS why cant they just include it in the game while they can. Just trying to effing milk us

by Orlyeh - 2009-08-06 09:56
» depends

If it's a complete game and the included levels are "enough", then maybe they really are going above and beyond what the release schedule calls for?

How many included maps must a game have before it's okay to say "Okay, now the DLC is warranted?"

by bsanehi - 2009-08-06 10:00
» yep they can

do that on the ps3 blu_ray discs but the fat lazy f*cks just want more money

I guess the moral of the story is: if you plan to support a game by releasing levels/gun/addons for console gamers who, traditionally, have no access to mods or new levels, don't say a darnn thing until it's actually released.

I never like hearing "DLC already planned" because it just makes it seem like the stuff they have in mind is already complete and they're just going to call it DLC. But if its Infinity Ward maybe, just maybe, they'll stick with their fan pleaser stance and make actual complete map packs and such.

They should just include it in the disc already.

» Getting Saturated lately

I loved cod4 and still played it till now. But this torrent of news of bull from IW is pissing me off. What i'm looking at it is milking the game even though it hasn't been released yet, how low can you be?

by ChaosZero112 - 2009-08-06 17:44
» Omg

Are you people that dumb (bsanehi) or just not seeing the big picture?

This has nothing to do with what they can include on the disc.

It extends the life of the game.

Say you buy the game in November, play it non-stop until December, then get bored.

Then January a new map pack comes out, so you decide to dust off the game and put it back in your drive. You play non-stop until April and get bored again.

June a new map pack comes out so you take out the game once again.

It extends your playtime from 2 months to over 6.

Now the only thing you can technically argue is paying for the maps, unless they were developed after the game was released. An alternative to this is charging 79.99 instead of 59.99 for the game ($20 for the additional map development), but who wants to pay more for a game if they aren't sure they're going to download the map packs?

by JaXeRiR - 2009-08-06 20:01
» Sure

That's exactly how it works, everyone gets it, but what you don't get here (and neither do I) is why the heck they talk about DLC before the game is even released?! That's just gonna irritate gamers.

To be honest, I reeeally don't get why they even announce something like this right now. The two previous games (MW1, WAW) both had multiple DLC map packs released after the games were out, so I think everyone can basically guess that the same will apply for this game. I guess they just had nothing better to say about the game at this moment, and decided to state the obvious.

It seems the game is all ready to be released like right now, but they're just waiting for the big date, and while they're at it they'll just design more maps.

But yeah, I'd rather buy just the game without the extra maps for 59.99 than with them for 79.99.

Anyhow, I'm sure the game will still sell like ice cream in Sahara.

(Psst, ChaosZero112: that means it will sell a lot.)

By the way, I love how you say that the map pack coming out in your example triples the playtime of the original game.

» @ JaXeRiR

@ JaXeRiR You are right man, speaking about DLC before the game is released is a bad idea and should be avoided by publuishers/developers. It gives the impresion that they are trying to "nickel and dime" gamers. They may think that they sound commited to the gamers, but the effect is the real opposite.

Speaking regarding the DLC, the last time they only released 1 map pack even though they promised to release 2, the original map pack and the gamer contest created pack. they decided t just make one, and when asked about the second pack they gave the excuse that they were already working on a new game and they would not be supporting COD4 further. I hope they drop that philosophy this time around and provide extended support to the game like Treyarck has done with WaW.

You can say whatever you want on this forum, but you'll buy them. Even if its not maps from COD:MF there will definitely be more than 2 map packs. People would pay for the original maps, or remixed originals, just to play with new weapons, perks, and vehicles. It may be a "stupid idea," as you so cleverly put it, but its more than I've seen you come up with. So as you sit there as a non-contributing zero, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the map packs.

by TheRockness - 2009-08-07 03:08
» @Walo

I think Activision rushed them into the development of MW2. Not to say that its going to be a bad game in any way. I'm just speculating that maybe they wanted to make two, but Activision said "MW2 now now now! Forget the map packs! MW2!" So they just let the gamers make the map pack while they moved on.

@ JaXeRiR:

As long as the make the game long enough and satisfying, then the notion of DLC on the way might excite gamers -- further hyping the game before its release. I'm not sure all gamers are as responsible with their spending as you are, and won't really plan or think about spending that money. They'll just buy it to continue playing on line with their friends, or just for the competition.

» AM I the only person

that could care less about the single player? I mean all I play is the multi player on Live. I played like one mission on COD 4 and COD WAW I'd rather it just have multi player I could care less about the campaign.

by Sw3RvE - 2009-08-07 07:03
» same here

i only play multiplayer too.

so if you buy the prestige edition thats $150 plus the map packs... thats $170. with all that money you can buy almost 3 games. lol
