A slimmer PS3: Why are we not surprised? |

In a statement from its Japan press office, Sony confirmed that smaller chips for the PlayStation 3 are already in the works and should be out by late 2008 to early 2009.It was also revealed that current KYEC 90nm chips will most likely be halved in size, paving the way for a sleeker version of the console.
It must be noted that the PS3 still hasn't debuted in Europe at the time when word got out that the slimmer PS3 is on the way. The development, though, comes to nobody's surprise as the console's predecessors, the PSX and the PS2, also underwent tremendous size reductions.
Fans are hoping that the slim version doesn't carry the same heat issues that came along with the shrinkage which plagued PS2 users who reside in warmer and more humid areas.

kieran has a point but seriously, all you need to do is think a little, this is to reduce the cost of the ps3 for sony. not to make a smaller unit.
in time they may come out with one, but not til about 2010.

PS1 is what you need, Not the PSX.

About the shrinking of the devices, I doubt it. Just because sony CAN shrink the system with smaller coolers and power supply, its not smart to yet. It costs too much to change from the mass production of one device to another. With chips, its not such a big deal, but with cooling systems and power supplys, its not worth it, until a few years down the track when they can do it as a RE INSTIGATER of demand, not while demand is still high.

- Firstly one of the sony execs was seen in a meeting with ibm execs showing off a 40nm 6ghz cell, not that they'd clock it @ that, but think of it like this, a 6ghz cell @ 40nm clocked @ 3.2 could be passively cooled, removing the fans will cut size as well as the volume of space taken by the heatsink.
-Secondly, less power consumption. The reason why the ps3 is bigger than the xbox 360 is because the power supply is in the system. a lower consumption could result in a lower wattage power supply with could be turned into a (also passively cooled)brick outside the system.
-finally as the gpu and blueray components age the odds of them becoming smaller also increases, having a ultra slim slotloaded blueray drive and smaller more heat and power efficient rsx will also slim the system.
This is very possible and a very good idea for sony to persue.
