A peek at its guts: Producer Cohen reveals SAW videogame details

SAW: The Video Game - Image 1We mentioned in a previous article that they'll be making SAW (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) into a videogame, right?

I tried to prevent my eyes from rolling when I first heard the news as I've been burned more times than I care to count whenever anyone attempts stuff like this. Movies to videogames, games to movies, it doesn't matter. All but a few notable exceptions are bad. Really bad. Micheal Jackson bad.

Oddly enough, upon reading an interview with the game's producer, David Cohen, I find myself stragely hopeful that these folks might actually know what they're doing. I'm not kidding.

For one, they're gonna be taking their time developing the game. One of the pitfalls of movie to game adaptations is that they are often rushed to hit a movie release date. This leads to half-done, buggy software with bad controls and over-short playtime coming to the market against stuff like Mass Effect (I'm looking at you, Iron Man).

They will be looking at the game from a cerebral, primal, perspective. In Cohen's own words:

We'll be getting into the minds of Jigsaw, his victims and everyone in the universe. What motivates them, why they do the things that they do, how they relate to one another and melding the story and design step by step using this thought process.

To this end, they'll be using valuable input from SAW creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell.

On the gameplay itself, Cohen explained that it will be more of a horror thriller rather than a survival horror game. There will be elements from the survival horror genre including exploration, mystery, and puzzles, but also ample amounts of action and suspense.

Oh, and there will be blood. Lots of it.

The game will take place directly after the ending of the original movie and will bridge the gap between SAW I and II. We'll keep you posted on more news on this one as they come in.
