What started out as a quarrel over the succession to the French throne in the early half of the 14th century has become known as one of the bloodiest wars in history, and now Koei is gearing up to bring all the intensity and drama of the Hundred Years' War to the PS3.

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War, Koei's 2007 title for Sony's next generation console, puts gamers in the role of a rogue commander and gives them direct control of mercenary units in fierce battles with English and French forces. With Bladestorm's Free Mission system, players will get to play both sides of the conflict during the same playthrough. Align yourself with the English in one battle, help the French in the next - who you fight for depends entirely up to you.

As a commander, players must consolidate their position and build up a good reputation. The more dependable and capable you are, the more men will flock to your banner. The challenges you have to undergo will also become harder as you become more well-known, but with the help of your troops - who become even more lethal as they gain more combat experience - nothing can stand in your way.

Speaking of troops, let's take a brief look at the people who will make up your mercenary army:

Spearmen combine relatively long attacking times with moderate defensive abilities. Effective at intercepting cavalry charges, longspear men with shields are able to keep enemies at bay.

Even amongst archers, Longbow men are renowned for their long-distance attacking capabilities. Archers can mount horses to become a cavalry unit.

Developed by Omega Force, Koei's award-winning internal team, Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War will hit PS3 consoles around the world in 2007. Stay tuned for more news here at QJ.
