PS3 HDD Decrypted Tutorial Released - Image 1Here's an update on the decrypted-but-not retail PlayStation 3 HDD.

While the hack was decried as fake, it seems there's a matter of technicality that needs to be clarified. PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU explains on his blog that while the HDD was indeed a retail PS3, the hack only removed the HDD layer encryption.

It's a technicality thing. What it means is that the files were unpacked, but not decrypted. You get a few firmware parts, but the essential files are still encrypted, so it's technically still useless for those who were expecting a full-blown custom firmware for the console.

So is the hack real? Depends on how you look at it. It's a hack, even if it is useless on a practical level. Then again, if a hack is practically useless, could it still be properly considered a hack? Whatever the case, there's a brief tutorial that will help you recreate the process. You can view it after the source link.

Thanks to Riivan, Anonomys_Person and MohammadAG for the tip!

Hack, or not a hack, that is the question:

Wasn't unpacking of PUP files possible for years? I'm sure about this, so correct me if I'm wrong....

» That is still good news.......

Hey I know that this is off subject but I believe in Homebrew but not piracy.......PS3 has great titles and even better titles on the way but if this person ever crack the PS3 just crack it for emulators I really want to see a Dreamcast or a Sega Saturn emulator and PS2 backups and that would keep PS3 pushing out the great titles......

» There you go

So this wasn't a fake after all. He never claimed to crack any file encryption, he only claimed to decrypt the hard drive itself, which is accurate.

And it's not useless either, it means that one layer of encryption has been cracked. It's one step in cracking a multi layer encryption scheme.

» then....

Anyone worthwhile actually working on decrypting the files? Considering the fact that this nice fella just layed them out on the desk for us?
