A bit of a pick-me-up

Prospective PS3 owners are currently undergoing something of a trial by fire. What with the lambasting by various media outlets  over price and configuration, a  seemingly constant stream of rotten news and miscommunication, and a roasting by Xbots and Nintendophiles (no offense) bent on revenge it's no wonder we're all a bit tetchy lately. Still not to worry, at the end of it all we get to enjoy this:

Is it just me or are most of the final fantasy bosses so over the top that they become unmemorable and slightly disorienting? Still impressive but its almost as if theres too much to take in at the same time. Assassins creed still looks cool. It almost looks like it could be a Prince of Persia.

Some of that footage I've never seen, most of it yes. I can't believe people are downplaying this video. This is good pick-me-up now all we need is the Tokyo Show to come a long for more good news.

never cease to amaze me with your cynicism. about 70-75% of the video was realtime. The Naughty Dog game, Metal Gear, the forest Scene of Final Fantasy XIII were all real time. The Getaway was also real time, as was Tony Hawk. Assassin's Creed wasn't real time, but I've seen ingame screen shots of the game, and it looks very close to the cinemas.

To all the PS3 fans out there, it's only 4 months until the Tokyo Game Show, and 6 months until release. We'll have something to shut up the dissenters then. Be patient. The same people that are talking bs now will be creaming their pants when the heavy hitters come out around this time next year. I was at E3, I saw and played the system. Sony may actually live up to the hype of what the system will deliver this time. Forget the past, and approach this new generation with a clean slate. Even Microsoft and Nintendo have impressed me immensely this time around, and I'm diving into their pool also.

To the dissenters: Quit being jerks and enjoy being a gamer. The competition is going to be fierce this time around, and the gamers are going to be the ones who benefit. All 3 companies are whipping out their "AAA" game, and I'm pumped for all 3 consoles.

To the people that can't afford a PS3: Don't worry about it, the system will drop in price sooner rather than later (I'm guessing around the fall of 2007), and it will be more than worth it by that time. In the meantime, enjoy the consoles you can afford (ie a 360 or Wii), as they are no less spectacular too.

basically, everybody needs to chill with the crazy fanboy bs and just have fun. gaming isn't about segregation and factions. it's about escaping into a digital world, and forgetting about your real life troubles for a few hours out of your day. it's about good times and fun.

LOL. i'm actually impressed with the realism of Afrika, though i have no idea what kind of game it will be.

they also forgot Heavenly Sword, which I got to play at E3, and man, did that game kick ass. like I've said numerous times before, it's God of War with a female lead. but it's no less gorgeous (the visuals are simply breathtaking, especially the little details), and the gameplay is fast and fun. if you're going to immitate an action game, God of War isn't a bad choice.

something that people seem to forget, right before the 360 launch the titles looked like *****, they we're buggy and looked very last gen. In comparison dev's for the ps3 are doing a great job of getting good looking games out the door day 1. I mean us 360 owners are still waiting (minus a few ok titles [and oblivion, but that was pc first]) for the really next-gen looking games which are now finally just around the corner. so i think of it as quite an accomplishment for the starting line-up of ps3 games to be pushing quality that is the same or better than the second wave of 360 titles.

and nice video.

Finally, another person who can appreciate both system's qualities. thank you, darksquirrel. It was expected that PS3 launch games would look like ass, but they don't. X Box fanboys love to compare 1st generation PS3 games to 2nd generation 360 games because they look incredible. a fair analysis would be comparing 1st gen to 1st gen, where, in that regard, the PS3 smokes the 360.

of all the games i saw and played at E3 for the PS3, i don't think a single one looked last gen to me. what it boils down to is time. Microsoft launched the 360 within a year of it's announcement. that's quite a feat, actually, but as a result, developers had to rush and put out titles, and they didn't really get a chance to learn the system, and really push the console visually.

in order for Microsoft to get an edge this console cycle, they needed to launch before the competition. can you imagine if the PS3 had launched first? it's lead would be to much. the PS3 on the other hand, has had an additional year of development time, and the launch games show that, as the system is already using techniques that it has taken Microsoft a year to learn.

next year promises to be much, much more interesting, as PS3 second generation games are going to be coming out (like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII). the few sneak peeks we've seen of that generation look comparable, if not outright better than second generation 360 games. personally, i don't care which system looks better, i just want to play some good games, and both systems will have them in spades. from exclusives (like MGS 4 and the Naughty Dog game, as well as Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Too Human), to multi platform (GTA 4). man, i'm so excited about all 3 systems that i'm close to bursting, actually. good times are ahead, and in lew of all this uncertainty, that's the one singular guarantee of all the new consoles.

I have a few questions for you:

Were you at E3 this year?

Did you get to hold the PS3 controller in your hands?

Did you get to see, first hand, and not grainy videos, the games the system will be offering come November 17th and 2007?

If the answer is no to one or more of these questions, kindly sit down and reserve judgement until you do. Trust me, come later this year, many feet will be in many mouths, and it will not be the feet of Playstation fans.

first thanks for the agreeing comment for #15 and second, seriously i think so far the easiest example of the ps3's power that can be shown running in realtime is heavenly sword. It looks just as amazing as the video they showed last e3 (no joke) and seems to be following in the veins of god of war (not a bad vein to be in).

I think graphics will be taking a huge leap forward in the coming years, these consoles are providing developers with power to make the pc devs drool.

Oh and take a look at crysis, for the PC , the fricken pc, easily one of the best looking games at the show. Not running on incredibly advanced hardware (i mean a good video card is required but, so far there saying it's not gonna need a beast of a pc to run) i mean they're not getting a 6-8 thread processor with a cutting edge gpu to work with, they're working with current pc hardware. So it just goes to show there's a lot of power to be tapped and i wouldn't be horribly surprised if some of the playstation devs happen to do it first.

To give insight into my opinion, I'm going to share my experience with my last 2 generation of consoles.

I started with an N64 in the N64 era, and was a die-hard Nintendo fanboy (After all, I was 11 and wanted to make myself feel better about what console I had). But by the end of that generation, I had, and loved, a PS1, due only to the freaking sweet game selection on that system.

Thus, going into the PS2 generation, I was all over the PS2, getting my first job in order to buy myself one (14/15 at the time). However, by two years ago, I had all three consoles, because each one had a few exclusive must-have games (Halo, Zelda, FF). So, since I have all three consoles, I'm basing my opinion on this generation based on which system I'd rather play 3rd party non-exclusive games on. The winner? Xbox. IMO, Xbox wins this time around simply because it was able to get itself some good exclusive titles, it's the most powerful system, and its amazing (by this gen's standards) HD support.

So, what conclusion does this long and boring story lead me to? Its going to end up just like the last generation--each console is going to have its exclusive titles worth owning the system for, and fan-favorites will be decided by console power. Thats why my launch money is going into the PS3. On top of having games that are looking to be better than the 360's 1st gen launch titles, HDMI output, Blue-Ray support, a 60-Gig HD are going to be what sells the system to me.

--18 I'm glad to hear that from someone who's been to E3. I had always been relying on the MGS4 shots to show what can be done realtime with the PS3, as past MG games tended not to make pre-rens look better than actual gameplay footage.

Added note: As much as I hate to admit it, Linux support is another selling point for me. Thats going to save me a couple hundred dollars that I was going to spend building a junk computer to run Unix on.

yeah, the video can make people who intend to buy a ps3 feel better but the weird need for people to flame anything they see simply brings you back down.

there appears to be a new vocal character called figboy, kudos for making yourself heard, i got bored after a while... it seems there are just too many people out there who just want others to be unhappy.

ok, there's one issue i have with the whole fanboy vs fanboy battle this time round, and that is graphics. now when xbox came oout the whole sony fanboy team went on about how graphics weren't worth fussing over, and team-xbox were all over how powerful it was... now this time round ps3 has the edge (whether you like it or not) and the roles are reversed, with xbox people saying how graphics aren't everything and sony fans saying they've got the most powerful system. THEN there's the argument over pre-rendered material, surely xboxfans if graphics don't matter, who cares if it's prerendered?!

you can't have it both ways, if you care that something in that video was prerendered then you do care about the graphics 'race'.

for me the next gen starts at ps3 and wii, just because they have the franchises i'm interested in. mgs, ff, mario, zelda... not to mention the other ps3 titles which piqued my interest (heavenly sword, assassin's creed). if xbox gets some games i want i'm going to be in a quandry, as i don't have the cash for both.

in closing, can we all take a chill pill, and if you really want to make a noise why not go find out about the thing you're complaining about first?

The only people worried are the Xbots and the Wii-Tards, I mean come on. Sony is the king over all gaming, and nothing else has come close to it in over ten years. In America, in the media and such, people are saying bad things about Sony because Xbox is an American company. Actual Gameplay, blah, blah, blah, give me a break, if you look at the specs, you'll see that it's more powerful than the 360. The consoles are switching places in performance. Am I worried, no, not at all. I'm just tired of people trying to bring Sony down because their systems are struggling for ground. For you Xbots and Wii-Tards, sit down, shut up, and drink your damn tea! I'm just glad I'm not going to be swinging a controller around, wires smacking your arms and face everywhere, or paying out the but for the extra features on Xbox 360/Live...plus the charger, and everything else.

heveanly sword & MGS doesnt even have a set release date. so all we know it could come out Q3 of 2007. and alot of the good ps3 games are coming out between Q2-Q4 of 2007. about 1 year after launch. alot of good 360 games comming out this fall that rival that of ps3 games are comming about a year after launch. so how does ps3 games comming out a year after launch, constitute for 1st generation games while 360 games comming out a year after launch constitutes for 2nd generation of games?

the cycle will never stop until there is a generation where each system looks exactly the same. and at that point, it will all be about what games the systems have. which, really, it should already be about that. each console is looking to have killer exclusives that just *have* to be played. the only hinderance is our wallets. and that's really the issue behind all this fanboy drivel. not everone can afford all 3 Next Gen systems, so they lash out against the one they can't afford. I'm making it my mission to have enough for all 3 by the time the PS3 launches, i'm just holding off on the 360 because there isn't anything on it yet that i want to play that i can't play on my computer (ie, F.E.A.R, Oblivian, Call of Duty 2 and Condemned.

to 30: only a small portion of that video was prerendered, i'd guess about 30% was prerendered. the other 60% was real time. look up those games yourself and check out the in game screenshots. yes, they *do* look that good.

to 33: Heavenly Sword may not make the European launch date. there has been no word on a US release. MGS4 is considered a second generation PS3 game because it comes out after the business fiscal year, which is March 2007. the 360's fiscal year ended March 2006, therefore everygame coming out after that date is considered 2nd Generation, while everything before is considered 1st. the same goes for the PS3. games like Resistance, Warhawk, and Untold Legends are 1st Gen games. i hope that clears things up.

that halo 3 trailer was real time, confirmed by bundie,. microsoft, IGN, and the press. get your facts straight. and about this video, the majority of those games are coming out for xbox 360 as well, except for metal gear and ff, which i could care less about. sony has shot themselves in the foot this generation. within the next 10 years, expect to see crash bandicoot and snake make their first appearances on the Next Xbox. Sorry sony fans, youre getting screwed and its not fair.

Actually, every game but Tony Hawk, Metal of Honor, and Call of Duty 3 are PS3 exclusives. Assassin's Creed as only been announced as a PS3 exclusive. naturally, that could change, but it's possible that could change in the future. Solid Snake already made his first appearance on an X Box console in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. Crash hasn't been a Playstation exclusive in *years.*

The Getaway is also a Sony exclusive title, but I just hope that game actually delivers this time around, and the first two were mediocre. Very good and enjoyable games like Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Gran Turismo are also Sony exclusives, so I don't see how Sony fans are getting screwed, but to each his own, I guess.

You're also presuming that there will be no *new* original titles created for the PS3. God of War, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, Kingdom Hearts and Katamari Damacy all made their debuts on a Sony console, and were new and fresh at the time of their first appearance. Just because a few familiar titles are going multiplatform, doesn't mean developers aren't creating content for each systems strengths exclusively.

Honestly I was looking forward to the Halo3 video but when I saw it... I didn't think it looks leaps and bounds above halo2... it actually saddened me... cuz as much fun as Halo/halo2 are... they're still just shooters and get old (yes I said I get bored of playing Halo), so a shiny new gloss to the old halo just doesnt excite me. I'm just hoping that MS doesnt pressure Bungie to get it out ASAP because I think Halo2 could of been a great deal more refined if bungie had just a bit more time to work on it.

Also, koo vid, twas fun to watch.

The Halo 3 trailer was not intersting at all. As for Metal Gear Sollid it will never to come to xbox360. Kojima said he only did it once for the original Xbox and it didn't have the true and fantastic game for the ps2. He said that he won't bring any MGS games beyond PS because they are made for each other just like Nintendo and Mario. I don't see how Playstation fans will be screwed if all the companies are behind them %100, with many new frenchises. By the way did you know that people were waiting for MGS4 more than Halo? MGS4 was on numerous sites from its first showing last year untill now. While Halo 3 was onlly talked about after E3. What does that tell you? What I'm trying to say is that your comment is your personal opinion. Because everyone knows, including xbox fans, that the Playstations has plenty of games to offer. No one needs to deny that. I'm a Playstation fan, and I'm denying that xbox360 doesen't have anything to offer.

Actually, the PSP has a few good original games for it. Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, is possibly the best game on the platform. Daxter is an original title that is also very good, Exit is another good one. there's also the Metal Gear Acid series, which is interesting and enjoyable. on the horizone are Ratchet and Clank, which i played at E3, and it was enjoyable, there's Lemmings, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Loco Roco, Silent Hill: Origins. while some of the characters may be familiar, the games are all new storys and adventures, and not ports. also, FFVII Crisis Core is coming to the PSP, and it looks promising. personally, i don't care if the games feature familiar faces or original creations, as long as the games are good. and they're finally starting to do just that. the PSP had a rough start, and emulators basically got me through, but now the system is finally coming into it's own as developers are using it as more than just a portable playstation, with "port" being the operative word here.

i just read an interview with one of the Naughty Dog developers, and all the footage of it's game is completely real time, running off of the engine they created on the PS3 (it's the 3rd person game with the guy in the white and red shirt running and gunning in the jungle) . that game looks phenomenal, and as more developers show off what they can do with the system, more support will follow. as each day passes, i see how incredible of a piece of hardware the PS3 is, and i think the $600 tag is justified. i also just got my PS3 on reserve at my local game store, so hopefully they'll have enough and i'll get mine on launch day. next up: the Wii!

all those "original games" where based on consoles or ripped directly from consoles with the play time cut down. daxter was basically jak 2 with no jak and with 1/4 of the total play time. ratchet and clank is basically ratchet and clank for ps2 with worse graphics and less play time. all those games are better left on consoles where they look better and play much longer.

@47: That game is called Assassin's Creed. It's made by Ubisoft Paris(I believe) the same people who made Prince of Persia.

@48: You don't make any points. Every "original games where based on consoles or ripped directly from consoles" is basically exactly what the DS is doing. Mario DS, Mario Kart DS, Metroid: Hunters, that new Super Mario Bros., Zelda, and more. All those are good games and the PSP is getting good games too. Please stop being a fanboy and start enjoying the compitition. Even if you are so loyal to Nintendo, I'm assuming since you are critizing portables, that you won't buy a PSP then atleast know that the better the compitition the better games you get.

Yes Halo 3 was talked about after the end of Halo 2, but only by xbox owners. All of the MGS games have been talked about since the first one. MGS4 was not only talked about by Playstation, owners but by Xbox owners as well. Numerous predictions and questions have been asked by gamers in many game sites like gamespot.com and ign.com untill E3 2006 and still continuing. Go to any website and see which game is on their homepage MGS4 or Halo. Also which is most mentioned and which is most talked about after seeing their trailers.

they forgot to put "HALO KILLER" KILLZONE!! hahahahaha!! the ORIGINAL prerendered game. How many of you actually sit there and watch the CG's? while playing? can anyone answer? you know most ppl, just skip that stuff and go for the meat of the game...which is ACTUAL GAMEPLAY!! I say 0% of that footage is actual gameplay. I know because I work for Sony!!

i watched the video again, and at least 60% of it has been confirmed real time. seriously, people, stop being such skeptics and actually look up some of these games before you outright dismiss them. The MGS4, Getaway, Stranglehold, Naughty Dog game, The Bar shootout game, most of the Final Fantasy XIII footage, Tony Hawk, and the FPS at the end are all real time. Medal of Honor: Airborne and Assassin's Creed, and the Train segment of FFXIII are prerendered. in either case, the PS3 is going to prove itself as a graphics powerhouse, and all the dissenters are going to eating a lot of their feet.

#53, you may or may not work for Sony, but you don't work at Square-Enix or Kojima Productions. Hideo Kojima has never exaggerated when it came to his Metal Gear trailers. They *always* looked like the trailers. going by that universal truth, if the PS3 can deliver graphics as top notch at MGS4(which has been proven with real time demonstrations) , what makes you think that it can't deliver the visuals in FFXIII, or the Naughty Dog game? i swear. all this negativity and skepticism is really getting old.

Thank you for your brilliant contribution! You have furthered the entire gaming community by posting. Thanks!

Great movie and even greater song. The whole 10,000 days album is AWESOME, if you like tool you should go pick it up. I also hadn't seen some of the footage in that movie, and I liked the ending with Raiden... I could have almost seen that coming. It IS the coolest thing the PS3 has rendered so far, anyway :P

you must not like video games much, huh?

and while i do think that MGS4 will prove to be a worthwhile game, to dismiss the others reaks of fanboyism.

i suppose the millions of gamers that sunk their cash into Final Fantasy, Tony Hawk, Medal of Honor, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Grand Theft Auto, and Splinter Cell have been wasting their time then? those millions of gamers have nothing to look forward too on the PS3? or any other console for that matter?

i'd recommend thinking before talking out of your ass again. just a little bit of friendly advice for future episodes of extreme and ignorant fanboyishness.

all those gamers where little kids... which arent much of a market for ps3 because of the price... anybody going to pay 600bucks doesnt just want it to play a little kids game like jak, or ratchet, or slycooper.

Sly, Ratchet and Jak weren't just for little kids, and the games appealed to a much wider audience, than, say, a GTA title would. i'm 26 and i happen to own the sly and jak and ratchet games, and they are no less enjoyable for it. not everyone that purchased those specific titles were 8 years old.

indeed, the PS3 isn't for the under 18 market, but out of 5 billion people on this planet, i'm sure Sony can find a few million willing to shell out $600 for their new console this year. the people who were 15 when the PS2 came out are 20 now. they've grown up and matured, and have jobs, and want a Next Gen console. probably more than one. and if they want it bad enough, they'll save up for a PS3 and buy it.

i don't get what all the fuss is about, as the price *will* drop. the PS2 sold 90 million units world wide. those 90 million units didn't sell itself during the system's first year. there were a bunch of folks that thought $300 was too much. so what did they do? they waited until the price dropped (and it did), then the other 80 million people hopped on board and purchased the system. i expect the PS3 to undergo a similar trend.

this first year is for the early adopters.

the second year will see the systems first price drop as the manufacturing process becomes more streamlined and cost effective. the 60 gig PS3 will probably drop to $500, the 20 gig to $400.

the third year will see another price drop, because of the same reasons as the second year, and also, just to remain competitive. knock off another $50 to $100 for each model. coincidentally, the cost of HDTVs will have dropped significantly in 2008 as opposed to 2006, and that $1000 flat screen will probably be retailing for $600 or less (i've already seen a 30 inch HDTV for under $1000, and a 20-25 inch for $700, so the prices *are* dropping).

by the fourth year, the PS3 will be under $300 for each model, and HDTV prices will have also dropped. as an added bonus, PS3 developers will have accummulated four years of experience developing for the console, and the games will be extremely close to tapping out the systems potential, as well as delivering some new tricks. since Sony plans on making this system "future proof" for ten years, we've only reached the halfway point of the PS3s life cycle, so you don't have to worry about plunking down *another* $600 in five years for the PS4.

by the PS3's fourth year, Microsoft will be releasing, or planning to release, the follow up to the 360, which will probably retail at $500 to $600. judging by how they unceremoniously abandoned the 24 million people who purchased X Boxes, especially the ones that bought one the year before the 360 launched (like me), i don't put it past them to abandon however many 360 users they have and dive full force into the 360 part 2. the X Box has little to no support, making the $200 i spent on that unit a wasted investment. if i had known the five titles i bought on the X Box would be supported by it's follow up, i would have saved that $200 and bought a 360 instead. as it stands, i didn't know about the 360 launch at the time i bought my X Box, so i feel kind of cheated, and i'm not in a hurry to give Microsoft my money just yet.

The PS2 is still getting heavy support from most, if not all developers, with titles like Okami, God of War 2, Destory All Humans 2, Final Fantasy XII, Valkyre Profile, FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus, and many others, so i'm still seeing entertainment return on my $300 investment five years ago. *That* is why i'm more willing to put my business with Sony in *this* console cycle. the PS1 and PS2 didn't let me down, so i have no reason to believe (especially based off of what i saw and played) that the PS3 will be any different.

may i ask how old you are? between 16 and 22 im guessing. As you grow up, youll realize that if you want to do the things you like to do, that age doesnt matter anymore. Sure some games are cutesy and others are bloody gore fests. Besides your friends placing stereotypical comments and peer pressure on you to play 'more your age'. I bet you would love to pick up your pokemon and see how fast you can race through it, how many you can catch, or even for the h*** of it. The ESRB rating only suggest the lowest age limit to the games you play, they dont give you an upper age limit saying you cant play a E rated game after you reach the age of 15. So grow up a lil and realise the joy in being a kid again, have a carefree moment or two. Oh, and stop being pressured by what your friends think about what you play.

you're entitled to your opinion, but i'm not going to deny myself what i consider to be entertaining because of some social prejudice. if i went by that model, i wouldn't play video games at all, because, most people here in America view gaming as a very childlike "hobby." i love Pixar movies, and animated cartoons and television shows (at least the good ones), and i loathe Pokemon, and have never played a Pokemon game, despite people's insistance that the games are indeed fun.

i don't agree to the mentality that video games, comic books, and cartoons are for little boys only, and that i should stick to the more accepted form of adult entertaiment like movies and novels. it's called maturity, and i suggest that you look into it, as it keeps one from coming off like a complete douchebag and child, and works wonders in something called the "real world," where the farce that is the High School heirarchy is shown to be worthless and a waste of effort and time. basically, i find it sad that you base your likes and dislikes off of your peers, than off of your own sense of self and individuality.
