80GB PS3 units coming to America tomorrow - Image 1

EB Games is currently taking pre-orders for Sony's behemoth 80GB PlayStation 3 model. And if we are to believe the recent listing found on the retail chain's online site, consumers should be getting it starting tomorrow, August 1. It comes with MotorStorm, aside from the now-standard five free Blu-ray movies.

Consumers should take note that these new SKUs don't come with the Emotion Engine so those who are planning to buy it will encounter problems with backwards compatibility. Despite that, it should be remembered as well that Sony has promised to come up with a software solution to this in the future.

Furthermore, EB Games cautioned that it is possible to have one or two-day turnaround time for initial deliveries that will cause some delays. The new SKU is priced for US$ 599.99. We know a lot of you currently own PS3 units right now. Anybody planning to buy a new one?

Interested parties may place pre-orders to EB Games by clicking our Read link below.

Sure, the new 80GB models don't have the Emotion Engine hardware. That part was right. Was isn't right, though, is saying that users "will have backward compatibility problems." Not all users will. Some users will have no issues whatsoever. The list of compatible titles on the software emulator is floating at something like 80% last time I heard.

The software emulation is already in place. They said they'll continue to improve support, not add it altogether. This article makes is sound like the software emulation doesn't exist yet when it, in fact, does already. It's been on the Euro spec models since they launched over there, AFAIK.

# Not really an issueGuest 2007-07-31 05:53
I remember when the 360 first came out, they were only going to make best selling Xbox titles backwards compatible to the 360 but change their mind. Also not all original Xbox games were readily playable on the 360. You had to go to MS site and look at a list of games that was either already compatible or not. This issue with some PS2 titles not compatible with the PS3 like MS will be resolved with patches or a new Firmware.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy yourself a new SATA HDD. Aren't they supported up to 800GB or something like that on the PS3?

When the euro ps3 launched I felt really short changed about the lack of emotion engine.

Only about 50% of my games worked, back at firmware 1.50 i think. But newer firmwares have fixed that, so now 100% of my 25 or so games work. It even supports dual shock when hooking up a ps2 controller via a usb adapter.

Just wish I could get the button mapping fixed in guitar hero 2. Anyone else have this working with an adapter?

# whats the diff.Guest 2007-07-31 08:08
i dont really have an opion about the lack of a emotion engine( actually i dont really have an opion cause i dont know what is is or what it does)so i plan on buying the original ps3 for the cheaper price with the emotion engine and going out either in a back to school special or on black friday to get one of the 300gb 5400rpm ata hdd. if there are OTHER diffrences can someone post cause to me that way is the best way to go. btw 250GB 2.5" 5400 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive by Fujitsu

# One more thing..Guest 2007-07-31 12:02
The 80GB also comes with Motorstorm. I think most people consider the 60GB to be the better value. If you would replace the drive on either one then you save around $40 bucks by going with the 60GB, and you'll have slightly better backward compatibility with PS2 games but probably wouldn't see a difference anyway.

The PS3 only fits the 2.5" form factor drives. I suppose you might get an 800GB hooked up, but you would have to leave the panel open, and have cords hanging out.

I am happy with my PS3 with the hardware backwards compatibility.S*it box360 Sucks at Backwards compatibility I am still having nightmares with having to buy 2 copies of Battlefield2 one for my original S*it box and a new one for my shiny new S*it box I can't believe I got sucked into the hype for M$ and brought 2 S*it boxs D'OH.... In short stick to Hardware backwards compatibility say NO to Software emulation having to wait for updates to play your favorite oldschool games.

I like playing Marvel Super Heroes!!!! on my PS3 with no issues, Crash Team Racing, Megaman Legends, Legend of Dragoon, Castlevania, all FF games, Parasite Eve.

people just need to ignore xbox fanboys like MCS. If everyone stops responding to this idiot, he'll stop spewing nonsense. itworks with my 11 year old brother... and others with childish tendencies (like MCS)...

Yes thats true, however MCS is a bad stench that will never go away, and knowing him talking nonsense makes me excited to own his little microsux brain of his. Besides me responding to him is fun.

MCS please I bet b4 the allege price cut of 50$ which is a rip off, im sure people was lining up to get a failure are 33% system, oh wait they weren't. Considering the fact Sony just hit 6 million world wide. So much for that.

That was fanboy'ish forsure...

It's a fact that even PS3's "flawed" BC is probably 3 times better then 360's....

Thing is, why did you buy a next gen console if you want to play year old games ? and if you have the games, don't you have the system that played them as well ?

Dunno, BC is not a concern for me...

Well, i never had a ps2, and having the ability to play ps2 games n a ps3 is a big plus for me. This way i can catch up with all the great games i missed (while playing my *****ty little gamecube...) like FF12, GoW, Okami, and Shadow of the Colosus :)

# next update an empty box and a controller for $700Guest 2007-08-01 18:46
im very disappointed with sony on this one. why take out the emotion egine? whats the reasoning for it. Price effective?

probably not.

this is got to be the biggest scam iI have seen in along time.

im glad I got my 60gig at the time. I have full backwards compatibility and I can easily swap out the 2.5 inch HDD for a 200gig! and spnd less than getting a new PS3

my advice to anyone getting a PS3. get a 60gig now before they run out.

so whats next SONY? do you want me to Pay $700 for an empty box and controller on the next system update.
