80GB PS3 Core System goes for the green, more energy-saving? |
Ó
So the new PlayStation 3 80GB Core system is out, and consumers are noticing something different about it. Not necessarily a bad thing, just... different. A user at the Slickdeals forum has stated his observations on the new unit.
According to him, it seems as though the new unit is more energy-saving. For one, the new model used only 130 watts as compared to the 155.2 watts that the 40GB model used when Metal Gear Solid 4 is on play. Other stats show that the new unit used only 111.9 watts when idle on the XBM, while the 40GB was guzzling up to 125.8 watts.
Could it be that good ol' Sony silently made the switcharoo to new 65nm RSX chips? They are cheaper to manufacture, yes, and they are for the most part considered to be more reliable after all. That seems to be the popular theory circulating nowadays.
Unfortunately, Sony seems intent on keeping the secret to their new 80GB Core system a secret as they have not made any official statements on the matter. But you're free to do your own sleuthing if you may wish. Do a little DIY compare and contrast if you can grab a hold of a 40GB and 80GB units - and do tip us on your findings!

They might of introduced the 65nm chip... but I'd think they'd be all proud of that and announce it.
why do you guys care so much about what they do? Save electricity, or new technology?
i got 80gb just a couple a days ago and i my dad hasnt opened it yet (which is very fustrating).
nice smaller chip is good less heat and runs alot cooler will wait for this one to get next spring
Because it's interesting.
Eh, and another guy claims only a 15 watt difference and another guy claims a 20 watt difference. All of them using Kill-A-Watt..... that unit is garbage. They bang so many of those out I have no doubt that it's the worst calibrated electronic measuring tool on the market!
Let's wait for someone with some REAL equipment test the difference between these two.
Plus, someone else claims their 40GB only uses 135Watt....so WTF!?!?!?!?!
I thought it was supposed to be spelled XMB not XBM...
Also a really good way to save electricity without buying a new ps3 is by doing this magical thing called turning it off. It saves a ton of electricity no 65nm cell processor required.
Except for those of us trying to battle cancel that want to run F@H 24/7.
Care to explain to us why you want cancer to win?
Just playin ;p
