6GHz Cell Processor queued up for the PS3?

Cell ProcessorAnd the new Cell Processor award goes to...? Which device, exactly? Signs are pointing towards the next-Next-Gen PS3. Or at least, Spong tries to speculate this possibility. They had sniffed out some interesting notes from International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) and a meeting about "Implementation of the CELL Broadband Engine in a 65nm SOI Technology."

Given the PS3's current Cell Processor, which runs at 3.2GHz and measured at 90-nano-metres (nm), it's interesting to find a new chip in the game. ISSCC notes revealed that:

The (new) chip operates at 6GHz at 1.3V and is fabricated in a 65nm CMOS SOI technology. The 65nm CELL Broadband Engine design features a dual power supply, which enhances SRAM stability and performance using an elevated array-specific power supply, while reducing the logic power consumption.

Intriguing? Hold your horses. That's not enough beef to prove that this supposed chip will head for the PS3. Not enough yet.

Apparently, among those who will attend this ISSCC conference would be a certain "S. Tokito" from SCE. Spong further speculates that this could possibly be Shizuo Tokito - the man behind the Blu-Ray. And if you put two and two together - the Cell Processor and Blue-Ray - the idea of this new processor heading to a future PS3 becomes that much more plausible.

Of course, there are other arguments that can be put forward here, one of which could be that the speculated new chip would be placed in the AV-centric PS3 that Ken Kutaragi "promised". Whatever the case, the said meeting will take place this February 13, so sure enough, we'll hear more about this 6GHz chip soon.

The PS3 actually could be worth $600 with a 6 ghz chip in it. Maybe $ony already started on the PS4 after screwing up the PS3 so bad.

...just like other processors, but that doesn't mean it's heading to the PS3.

The PS3 is a console, therefore the processor performance specs will remain unchanged. There's much that can be (and will be) done to reduce cost, reduce heat and increase reliability over the years, but it will still always be a 3.2GHz Cell processor with 7 active SPEs for the PS3.

If Sony choose the unusual step of producing a PS3 model with a higher spec Cell processor and perhaps more memory in future, this will only be used for the purposes of the PS3 acting as a computer, and as a games console, the Cell processor speed will drop back down to 3.2GHz with 512Mb of total memory available for games.

Its going to the PS3, SCE already stated that they intended to make a 65nm CELL asap and bring it to the playstation for cost saving benefits. Everyone else just hit the other nail on the head, for PS3 software the specs will stay the same, for other applications/operating systems and entirely different devices the sky is the limit.

# Not Really.Guest 2007-01-03 10:35
It shouldn't be that hot considering it's running on 1.3V which is considerably LOW for a CPU. 1.3V with good cooling you're probably looking at overall a 200W system at MOST. Probably only generating about 50ºC on load. And maybe add 5 to 10C more for the confined space the PS3 has inside, so still no where near melting point.

CELL=CRAP

All the games have slowdown and washed out colors and poor framerate compared to the X360 thats why i have sold mine and now a proud owner of the Wii and X360. The cell is not a gaming processor its more for multimedia like blueray movies

My friend bought a 360 and 3 months later he got the lights of doom and had to send it in to get it fixed. The wii is just gay, unless your five or retarded, then you may like it. But the PS3 overpowers them both by a **** load.

i don't have a ps3 but from what i hear and read from gamespot, it seems a new proc sure would be nice to improve the low framerates in 1080p. if it would be cheaper to make the 65nm cpu, it would seem odd not to bring a better product to the table. maybe they'd market it as at "ultra edition" or something of the like, where although it may not be mandatory to have the faster proc, it would indeed help framerates.

There's no way in HELL they'd put in a 6ghz into a 2nd line of PS3s:

a) Developers always build games for the weaker version of a console to ensure that everyone can buy and play their games.

b) It's financial suicide. Sony is currently losing $200/PS3 (no fanboyism, it's a fact) because they're 'cutting edge'. Why would they want to upgrade after producing the 3.2ghz becomes more affordable, and PS3s become increasingly profitable for them?

Their best bet is to put the new CELL to use in PCs, HDTVs, and other new technologies.

Cell processor fabrication yield is very low currently, somewhere around 20%. Terrible.

I'd think IBM would drop to 65nm technology to increase yield, add full IEEE floating point to the SPEs, because they've spent over 400 million already they are trying to sell it to the scientific community however it doesn't sell because the cell lacks full IEEE FP. Trash IBM, trash.

"An SPE can operate on 16 8-bit integers, 8 16-bit integers, 4 32-bit integers, or 4 single precision floating-point numbers in a single clock cycle."

Not very parallel only 4 SPFP ops per cc. Why not 128 SIMD processors all capable of doing one DPFP op per cc?

"For double-precision, as used in personal computers, Cell performance drops by an order of magnitude"

Not very powerful. I don't know what IBM is thinking trying to sell it outside of sony's ps3.

When AMD comes out with a real SIMD co-processor with somewhere around 256+ processors each capable of doing one double precision FP op per clock cycle, the cell will seem like a bad idea.

Also, why RAMBUS? PCI-express... come on IBM.

Something cool:

"Recent tests by IBM show that the SPEs can reach 98% of their theoretical peak performance using optimized parallel Matrix Multiplication."

The Cell ... Hands down.

It's about time Sony got something right!!! Blu-Ray, The Cell...

6GHz PS3? Not happening... it wouldn't be needed.

An 8 Core 6GHz Computer... now THATS more like it!

Although i hope the do a revision on the PS3 and give it more oomph ... maybe the media-centric PS3???? OOO!!

I'm going to guess that either this is for IBM super computers or the PS4. If it was actually for the PS4 that would be interesting. According to an IBM roadmap Cell should have 32 SPEs by then.

yeah, this upgrade is most likely intended for sony's next gen of high spec av stuff... we all know ps3 won't be upgraded in power terms, it would make sense to put the 65nm cell in ps3s but it wouldnt' change the actual system power.

and don't think that sony are going to make this kind of thing ps4... ridiculous! they'll be aiming way higher than a simple 1.5x cell processor...

nice to see there's still this stupid flame war though

I'm not a fanboy of any system because I own them all, but when 360 came out, everybody said the system was crap. I bought one when it was released and played Call of Duty for a year. Xbox is just now making games showing the systems true potential. To me Resistance is like playing Call of duty 2, so in a year or less we will see Sony's power.

The PS3 maybe more powerfull than the X360 + a lot more than the Wii - but who will utilize this power - it will cost game developers 2 much 2 develop a game just 4 one console (unless its Sony/Microsoft game studios :D) , so in the end, it dont matter which console u go 4, most games will b on both the power hungry machines.

X360 4 me now - PS3 nxt yr (when better games com out + i save up :D)

Yes, the PS3 is more powerful than the 360, but it is only slightly more powerful. Don't look at the specs and think it says everything, because it doesn't. Listen to the developers who understand the specs. Especally, listen to the developers working on both consoles creating games. They say the PS3 is slightly more powerful, FAR less than the specs suggest.

If they come out with a 6 GH's one, then I want a refund. I'm not going to be left with the *****-power-consuming ps3, while everyone else has the real ps3. Sure its great now, but what happens when there's a game out that needs 6GH's to run? Then my ps3 is fried, along with the 500 i spent. Not right. Not right at all.

although it is a high price to pay for a game console (keep in mind it just came out though) the PS3 costs sony $1600 to produce. so its already worth MORE than $600.

i am not saying any system is better than any other, but the reason xbox360 doesnt have slowdown is that they are aparently locked to 30fps, giving you smoother gameplay.

# 6ghz cellGuest 2007-01-14 17:08
I've heard issue's with how efficient the CELL BDE is. Like issues with being able to access ram once in every 8 cycles (correct me if im wrong). Now i've also heard that the ibm sever class cells dont have this issue (however they don't use custom low latency ram either). So, unless sony is going to fix this issue, why bother making the processer faster unless they plan on revising it so these issue's still don't exist. I'd buy another ps3 if they planned on fixing this issue if they do indeed plan on releaseing a 6ghz revision (highly doubtfull I might add) because it would equate to being well more than twice as powerfull. Also ppc64 architecture is pretty obscure and trying to get linux running with all the goodies is kind of difficult. Too bad running with x86 architecture is a bad idea in the aspect of ease of piracy (xbox), because alot of good comes out of it (my xbox with xbmc runs better than my linuxed ps3 w/ vlc) alright well im rambling, so i'm done.
