65nm CELL now in production for the PS3

The CELL processor - Image 1Yep, that's right. This 6 GHz, 65nm computer CMOS SOI processor is now under production, as Sony said it would do by 2007. PS3 fans, your moment has arrived: Sony began the mass production of the 65 nm CELL processor, although European customers should know that it is uncertain whether the new CELL chip will be slapped on their PS3s for the launch. Maybe it's for a newer PS3 model...

But like it was said before, the chip is cheaper to produce than the 90 nm version inside all PS3's out now. And it's relatively cooler. Does this mean it will be cheaper? Probably not, seeing Sony's PS3 sales since launch. But hey, as long as it's cooler. Oh and the CELL isn't just for the PS3. It will be inserted in a few more Sony and Toshiba products as well.

so what does this mean for current owners of the ps3?

» Sony

It means ***** you!!!

» Um speed?

6 GHz what? no way...can this processor still be inserted in the 90 nm's slot?

by Epsilion - 2007-01-30 17:15
» Cores?

Does it still use 7 cores (6 for games)?

by Kutibah - 2007-01-30 17:25
» umm

from what I've heard, this won't affect the performance at all. It still will perform at the same speed and everything, the only difference is that it produces much less heat, is smaller, and is cheaper. so from what everyone is saying, this really does not affect consumers at all. it's just easier to produce. now, for the 360, it would matter since it would help the overheating issues, but the PS3 doesn't have that...

by Jettic - 2007-01-30 17:25
» Don't listen to QJ

The 6Ghz version of the Cell will not be in the PS3, Sony wouldn't do that to their fans...

What they meant, was that the 65nm processor will be in production for the PS3, AND the benefits are below:

> Smaller processor (no advantage over current PS3 Cell processors)

>Cooler processor

>Cheaper for Sony to manufacture

>Closer to a price drop!!!

So this all pretty much means the current PS3 owners:

> Have the hotter version of the Cell (though not overheating)

>Have a bigger processor (but not better in any way)

>Were more expensive for Sony

Don't worry just look at it as a cooler processor.

by Epsilion - 2007-01-30 17:30
» heat could change alot...even in PS3

thanks...technically if it would lower the amount of heat it might also have a lower power consumption thus lowering the damage that the black hole of electricity that is the PS3 is doing to my electric bill.

by mentalboy11 - 2007-01-30 17:35
» Cool

but wait. isnt toshiba the big HD-DVD company? so are sony and toshiba enemies or friends or just two japanese companies competing against america? im confuzzled.

» I've checked into the details.

Unfortunately, none of the sources gave definitive answers. The 65 nm does improve performance but it's said to be situated in better bus and memory speeds. The Hertz rating is left undefined.

But yes, it still uses the old 90 nm design with regards to SPEs so the PS3 version will have 7 SPEs available to it (8 SPEs with 1 disabled by Sony).

I'll be checking for more insight.

by rolly poly - 2007-01-30 18:15
» it matters, but then again not really

cooler running electronics tend to last longer, as well as use less energy. remember kids resistance=heat=waste(unless you use electronics for extra heat in the winter like me)

performance gains in an fashion are moot, devs must code for the lowest common denominator. so higher speeds anywhere won't be used. remember the psp is underclocked, so that wouldn't be a first for sony either.

» Re: Cores?

The cell has 8 SPUs, 7 for gaming 1 for the XMB.

by Seoulfood - 2007-01-30 19:34
» eh?

not once does the source mention anything about 6ghz

qj is silly. I dunno what to believe.

but I know one thing, I'll be selling my ps3 to get the colder one when that comes out.

If it really does run markedly cooler, they could probably reduce the size of the ps3 considerably.

by Shatterdome - 2007-01-30 20:22
» It does have 8...

but one is disabled from the get go to increase chip yields...so in essence it only have 7 SPU's

6 GHZ would be a new chip, as PS3's cell is only 3GHZ.....so expect it in a beefed up media PS3, or not even in PS3's, but university research supercomputers etc....

by N3570R - 2007-01-30 21:20
» Slimline PS3 on its way...

That means that the Slimline version of the PS3 is on its way, hahahaha.

by Seoulfood - 2007-01-30 21:49
» yea

seriously, I'll be gettin rid of my ps3 before it's even had its first disk read error. haha

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-01-31 00:12
» .

The PS3's processor has ONE core and 8 synergetic processing units. A 6HGz processor will never be used in the PS3 because of cost and compatibility. It will eventually get a 65nm version of the cell, and the XBOX 360 will get a 65nm version of its processor, just much sooner.

by Cid - 2007-01-31 00:19
» What Is The Point?

I kind of don't get this. I hear that it is 6 GHZ, but will this even affect the PlayStation 3? do the games require this? Would it actually help run games smoother? The cooler part I understand, but will it have any other affect? Cause this is really Sony stabbing the people who bought the PS3 already in the back if it is.

by Broken_Hero - 2007-01-31 00:44
» This Means the the PS3 Cost-Reduction is Going Very Fast

Only a Couple of Months and they Managed to Mass-Produce it in 65nm...Incredible Speed

This will Mean that By Next Christmas 2007,the PS3 will be Cost-Reduced Enough to Increase the Value of the PS3 Package by a [100$] or even[150$]

Basicly...With this Level of Cost-Reduction Speed,Sony can add [a game, another Controler,Hi-Def cable] to the Current PS3 package in the coming [Christmas] Or Even more [Maybe Slash 50$ from the 600$ but thats Unlikely...Increasing the Package Value is the Way to Go]

This Wont Hurt Current PS3 Ownerz....The PS3 rarely Overheats Unlike the 360,Which Freezes Frequently

by rolly poly - 2007-01-31 01:11
» depends on the game

my 360 only "freezes" while playing saints row, and that doesn't have anything to do with the system overheating, just buggy code.

by Vietone - 2007-01-31 02:29
» ...

Let me explain how it works.

My making the chip smaller, it uses less power and produces less heat.

No performance gain/loss at all. As long as it performs at the same statistics as the 90nm processor.

Using the 65nm makes it so that less voltage is needed for the same desired effect. Less voltage even with the same amount of amps = less watt usage, and therefore less power = less heat.

by Devise - 2007-01-31 03:13
» ...

Never had a freeze on my 360. I've had it almost 11 months now. There was some overheating in some launch models.

This definitely means a reduction in costs, the 360 is moving to the 65nm process also this year also. I agree that a price cut is unlikely, because Sony still has a large loss margin to pull back on the PS3. Maybe if targets start falling behind they'll be forced to.

by jeezy - 2007-01-31 03:16

» What are you talking about?

"Only a Couple of Months and they Managed to Mass-Produce it in 65nm...Incredible Speed"

How is this incredible speed? Cell didn't debut with the PS3, it was available LONG before the launch of Sony's console, and we all knew it was moving to 65nm soon anyway (or were you living under a rock at the time?).

As for your last statement, it just shows what a dumb fanboy you are.

» 360

my roommate's 360 freezes all the time, while playing everything from Gears of War, Saints Row, and the Crackdown Demo, and we've had it less than the PS3 (we got the PS3 on launch, and the 360 a few weeks later).

the PS3 is quieter, doesn't overheat (though it does get warm), and has only frozen on me once, last week, while playing the Motorstorm demo.

i'd like to get a 360, but i just can't trust it right now. so far, the PS3 has proven to be the more well built machine. at $500/$600, Sony knew they couldn't play around with making the console sturdy.

by indy - 2007-01-31 06:30
» thats it

im *****ing done with these *****.S releasing half fast hardware. hopefully we all band together so next time a console is release it *****ing flops at launch. they better extend my warranty like microsoft did. its not fair if my ps3 has a shorter life span because they rushed it. dont tell me theres no performance increase. my ps3 runs hotter, dies faster and takes more electricity. do not reply telling me to put it in a cooler place or buy a cooling element for it. .*****. YOU i payed $$$$$ for it. what do i get for being a faithfull sony costumer... i can deal with the non-existant library of ps3 games but i cant deal with hardware changes its just not cool , no pun intended.

Usually the BS story goes "my friend's 360 always overheats and freezes and I had to send it back and pay for it etc." Wow great creativity there figboy for coming up with the "My roommate's 360 overheats." We don't make up BS about the PS3's reliability so why do you?

by Cid - 2007-01-31 07:21

That is the EXACT same reaction I had when I read this, except for I actually thought it was a more powerful proccessor too...was about to shoot someone. I have e-mailed Sony about this, waiting for a reply right now.

» the 360 from a PS3 owner's perspective

This is a "my roommate" story, but believe me, it's legitt, because I have no reason to bash the box.

My roommate bought a 360 and so that's why I opted for the PS3.

His 360 only crashed a couple of times. I think he was downloading something online a lot of those times too. I mean, shoot, my Wii crashes too. It happens

Anyways, I was curious to see if his 360 was overheating, after I played a good 2 hours of DOA, and I found out that it wasn't very warm at all. He does, however have a Nyko intercooler that hasn't crapped out on him yet, but in the end, I'd have to say, the 360's held up well.

I'm not going to deny that there were quite a few documented cases of defective 360's. That's MS's bad.

But for the most part, if you got a good 360, then it's going to be good for a long time coming.

Yea it's loud as hell, but system life and operation is key to me.

That sucks about the 65nm processor, HDMI, 120gb, "super premium" 360 that people seem to be talking about.

If that's true, then I can't really feel bad about me having a warmer running cell chip.

by indy - 2007-01-31 09:15

i own both consoles , its like a double sided dildo but the microsoft side has spikes.

» OS

After Sony puts this chip in the PS3 consoles and mass produce them with this core, wont the OS's go faster. I mena, dont the OS's rely on the core and also the memory to run great. Just like the new Vista platform that came out yesterday, they rely more on the memory, chip, and vid card to run it at its fullist. And as for what ive been reading about the games, it doesnt sound like it will make them any faster as all its really going to do is make the core cooler...

If you understand what im saying, post here and tell me if im right or wrong.

» Clearing up the nonsense.

"not once does the source mention anything about 6ghz"

- ISSCC white sheets indicate that the current prototype for STI's little PowerPC puppy runs at 6 GHz (256 GFLOPS) at a dual rail of 1.3V. The current CELL model in the PS3 runs at 3.2 GHz (205 GFLOPS) at a single rail of 1.3V. That same model can run at 2 GHz at a single rail of 0.9V.

"No performance gain/loss at all. As long as it performs at the same statistics as the 90nm processor."

" Haha everyone is getting so worked up over nothing, it will hardly run any cooler and is EXACTLY the same speed, it's only being changed because it's cheaper for Sony to produce on 65nm."

" from what I've heard, this won't affect the performance at all."

- Ahem. If you're any smarter, you'd specifically state that "you think that Sony will not use the advancements that come implicitly with the proposed 65 nm design, using only the current die map of the 90 nm model to not disappoint 90 nm model owners." Lower core processing current ALWAYS means processors run cooler. Any PC geek will slap that right back into your face. 512 KiB caches over an accelerated SPE network means multi-tasking, multimedia performance, as was demonstrated by the late 90s InsteadMedia GX "PC-in-a-chip" prototype by Cyrix. No improved performance? Review Virginia Tech's G5 Supercomputer, read the details of concurrent, parallel processing, and get back here.

"How is this incredible speed? Cell didn't debut with the PS3, it was available LONG before the launch of Sony's console, and we all knew it was moving to 65nm soon anyway (or were you living under a rock at the time?)."

- This IS true. The roadmap for the CELL BE has long been highlighted by STI (most especially IBM) and the 65 nm design was sure to come the moment Intel and AMD both announced their 65 nm die prototypes.

"Don't listen to QJ

The 6Ghz version of the Cell will not be in the PS3, Sony wouldn't do that to their fans..."

- I don't see what warranted this call. We explicitly announced "it is uncertain whether the new CELL chip will be slapped on their PS3s for the launch." What part of this statement is unintelligible? The use of the 65 nm CELL in the PS3 is not confirmed, at least not to our knowledge.

With a lower rail, the 65 nm CELL would probably equal the 90 nm version in performance, if you're comparing the Hertz ratings, just as the 90 nm version can achieve lower speeds. This will affect bandwidth and overall performance, but the 65 nm will still outperform the 90 nm even at the same Hertz level.

STI did not, and will not, claim to produce a 6 GHz monster as a 3.2 GHz just to satisfy a console gripe. The 65 nm IS better and it warrants the money and time put to researching the die map. Intel is coming out with a 40 nm, 80-core processor design, so the CELL may follow suit soon.

so that meens us people who bought the ps3 will have a much worser PS3 than other people waiting thats what sux i was one of the people who bought a PS3 defying the facts of bugs just so i can buy one and add another one bought to the PS bought list now thats i buy this my ps3 is gunna be inferrior to people who didnt want to buy the ps3 due to it might fail they get better quality fr exact same price ????????

» ^^^ don't pretend you're not a Microsoft fanboy

First of all, Sony's PS3 has had a 1 year warranty FROM THE START. It took Microsoft 1 year to extend their customers the warranty.

Secondly, the XBox 360 runs HOTTER and LOUDER than the PS3 and dies MORE OFTEN.

Thirdly, Microsoft rushed their console much more than Sony did theirs.

Fourth, "existant" is spelled "existent".
