58% of retailers DO have PS3s in the back

Next time you see this sign, DOUBT IT. - Image 1When the PS3 was released a few months ago, we can all still remember the hoarding, the panic-buying and the general sense of frenzy that was induced by reports of PS3 shortages. However, it may turn out that all this was unnecessary, as a recent study by American Technology research has concluded that 58% of retailers actually do still have the PS3 in stock.

By questioning over 150 different retailers, they were able to discover that most do have some PS3 units for sale. In fact, the only shortage that they were able to discover would be for the Wii which was available at only 3% of the establishments who participated in the survey. Some are attributing this proportion to either a decline in Sony's sales, or to an increase of PS3 units shipped.

So, with these numbers appearing in the U.S., can we expect the same thing to happen when the PS3 is launched in Europe this March? Will European players have to camp out and claw their way to get a spot in line, or can they just simply wait a month or so until the local equivalents of Best Buy and Circuit City are prompted to display their entire inventory?

» I don't get it

Here in Canada, it's still impossible to find either Wii or PS3 anywhere in any store. I always get the "currently sold out" sign.

» The truth at last

I find it weird that PS3 owners were ever denying that there were PS3 in stock in any stores ?. I mean WHY?.

» Well I might point out

I dont wish to alarm you but Canada and the USA are not the same country that could be a clue why they have no stock there in Canada.

» Its supply and demand

I for one have been to several stores with Wiis in stock. That doesnt mean anything.

The Ps3 is getting a constant supply and will probably never run our in stores anymore. This is normal, they can keep up with demand. What would be the point in having a product you cant sell fast enough.

Sure the Wii is going like crazy but in a month or 2, they will be everywhere again. Nintendo seems to be shipping them in big shipments so stores get them in huge supply and go out for a week or 2. Its pretty normal.

» Sorry to hurt you fanboy's feelings

I'm sorry to hurt all of your feelings but this is old news. The ps3 isn't selling because of the price and lack of games and online support. It's just a crappy piece of hardware people. Sony is a hardware giant not software. I'm not really a fanboy for any system because I prefer the PC for most games but why does everyone still think the ps3 is going to make a comeback? The ps3 is already sitting on shelves in Japan and without japan's support the ps3 is nothing. I'm not just making these facts up either please search the web or look at ign's article about ps3's sitting on shelves in japan instead of argueing with me. Luckily I bought a 360. Not we just need to convince sqeenix to jump ships..

» You sir...are an eeeediot

Games that really take advantage of any sytems hardware come out between 1-2 years.

Gears is a perfect example.

I remember numerous stories about how crappy the 360 is from the launch games.

And low an behold the 360 has some good games now. Mark my words by the end of 2007 there will be many AAA games for the PS3 and noone will care about ludicrous comments like yours.

» Bigger PS3 Stock

the better for future buyers :D.

It is obvious that SONY has overcome their early grips in the manufacturing process of the PS3 and now they are getting out many consoles per hour. After Europe and Australia launch 3 to 4 millions of PS3 will be in gamers hands. SONY will keep stocks replenished and a cut in price will be necessary to keep the momentum in sales, that is to be expected because the real money comes from software sales no from hardware.

» then...

demand for wii must be crushing PS3 demand, because the sales definitely are.

» re: Kill

Calm down fanboy. Honestly I hope the ps3 does better than I think it will do just for healthy competition but i'm glad it won't be like last round where ps2 had way too much of the market. I hope your right but the main reasoning behind my thoughts are the lack of online support with the ps3. It's just going to be hard for them to come up with anything even remotely close to xbox live in such a short time. But sir i'm sorry you had to revert to name calling and fitting perfectly into the fanboy persona that you so easily fill. Good luck in your quest to ensure that ps3 and sony "pwn" the universe and a bid you farewell.

» launch deez nutz

I think the XBOX 360's launch games were comparable to the PS3's one year later. There was more of them and generally they had higher ratings according to Gamespot. Come on Halo came out with the XBOX launch and it easily beat any FPS for the playstation 2, while project Gotham racing was comparable to Gran Turismo 3 at launch. Most PS3 launch games started development the same time as the 360's year after launch games, and the 360's were easily better. No developers really know much about the cell at this point, and it's really hurting the PS3 right now.
