40GB PS3s to be released on US this November |
Ó
Sony finally confirms today that they will be offering PlayStation 3 40GB models in the U.S. this coming November 2. This latest development was announced by no other than Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) President and CEO Jack Tretton. The arrival of the 40GB models in the States began as rumors when several retail chains like Target and Best Buy started showing proofs (database, price scanner, etc.) for the said SKUs. Despite the overwhelming evidence, SCEA kept mum on the matter until Tretton's announcement.
"I think the educational curve is starting to be broached with the general consumer," commented Tretton when asked about his thoughts on the PlayStation 3's status in the market throughout the end of the year and especially this coming holiday season.
The said model had already been introduced in Japan and Europe and was widely accepted by consumers. The 40GB PS3 will be priced for US$ 399.99. It sports two USB 2.0 ports but will not offer backwards compatibility and no multi memory card port.

I bought the 80g model that came with motorstorm AND a sony BD remote for 100$ more that the 40g will cost so it's not a big deal for me. 200$ wouldn't be worth the difference though, so I'm almost sad for the people who bought it at the maximum price point... But it's really great, in fact, because now a LOT more people will be able to enjoy the PS3, and that could mean more exclusives and that would mean even more PS3 gamers, etc, and then, more people online
The 80gb PS3 is als getting a $100 price cut. I still prefer my 60gb model with full PS2 backward compatibility though.
Well, now we now it'll be more possible to get the game. Because I plan on trading my PS2 in favor of PS3.
the 80gb still has backwards compatibility but the 40gb dosent and the 20gb is dead and the 60gb is dying? wtf sony. I have all three next gen platforms and a ds and a psp and a gba so i'm covered on all fronts. but i hope the ps3 dosent flop. I think the way they are doing buisness is retarded. they need to add achievements. make the xmb accessible in game for custom soundtracks, hurry up with rumble and make 2 or more profiles accessible at once. I hate the fact that if i jump in when my roommate is playing warhawk i cant rank up.
Personally, I'd just stick with a SKU system that fits your interest and go with it. And stop worrying which model is the best.
IMO, they're all great renditions of PS3. Just at varying prices and features. For me, it really doesn't matter as I really don't play games online. So just the 40GB would just be perfect.
by no backwards comnpatibility do they mean not even software,or do they mean no ps2 chips like every other ps3? thats quite confusing cause i dont see a point in NOT software emulating something at least.
Yes the choice of excluding the backwards compatibility is a strange one. It will be interesting to see if Sony buckles to pressure eventually distributes a patch in the future.
well thats the thing. There is NO reason they shouldnt at least software emulate it. at the very most all it would cheapen is nand costs, which wouldnt be all that much, probably 30 bucks at most, and 30 bucks isnt worth losing backwards compatibility.
to explain to people the 80 GB still has BC...because consumers dont realize it and think its just gone completely.
I'm amazed that many people care about it. I've only played 2 games on mine with BC...and for maybe a few weeks when I first bought it.
Instead of 40 GB PS3s to be released on US this November, the title should be 40 GB PS3s to be released in US this November.
Even though there isn't any BC its still going to sell alot.
Whats funny is Rumors from Sony ends up being true. After all This model was a rumor and now its not. Just goes to show you that Rumors aren't Rumors when they come from Sony.
