Seems 3DRealms CEO Scott Miller was feeling a little bad about the truckload of criticisms he leveled at the Max Payne movie. Miller did a follow up interview with Edge saying, "To be clear, I'm proud of this film."
He noted the sheer difficulty of making a film to movie adaptation:
Making films is much different than making games, because there's a lot more money involved, and a lot more people involved. What often happens is people get involved who do not fully understand the property and therefore try to take it in the wrong direction. At that point, the producers, the writer, and the IP creators have very little influence and just have to hope for the best. Only a few people like Spielberg have cradle-to-grave authority over a project.
He also makes mention of the particular difficulties of the Max Payne project. Most notable were Rockstar Games' attempts to stop the production of the movie after they bought the IP. After legal recourses failed, they remained largely uncooperative in providing materials that would help production.
"A book could be written on the winding hazard-filled path this project took," Miller said.
He credited the Max Payne movie as one of the best efforts he's seen at game-to-movie adaptations, sharing a spot with the first Tomb Raider movie at the very top.
